Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Hey JDThree, really sorry to hear that.  As you're well past the 14 day remorse period it looks like a repair job if you want to get rid of it.  A lot of people posting here have managed to get Samsung panels as a replacement and had same day fixes.  It might mean you have to look at both the Apple Store or an Authorised Reseller as possibilities.

It has been reported that the IR problems do get worse over time and considering your heavy usage this might escalate quite quickly.  It might be worthwhile scooting back a few pages here and looking for the part number that most poeple believe to be the Samsung panel.

I really hope that you find a solution that works for you.  Best of Luck.

I'll have to dig into it - same day fix would work for me if they can swing it.  Thanks for the glimmer of hope!

Talked with the support today. They are aware of the problem caused by some LG displays.

They offered me to send this laptop and get a new one or to get my money back.

I decided to try my luck with the new one in hoping it will not have IR.The good thing is the period of NQA is reseting the moment I get the new MBP.

I belive that Apple will resolve this issue. Let's see what happends

Hey "JDThree". Up until today, I was convinced that part # 661-7171 was a Samsung-only replacement display. However, I've heard from at least one person that they had their rMBP repaired with part # 661-7171 and received an LG display. I'm still waiting to get absolute confirmation on that. It's possible that someone made a mistake at the sorting facility though, and part # 661-7171 actually is supposed to only be a Samsung display. In any case, since we first identified part # 661-7171 as possibly being Samsung, every post about it has confirmed the theory (until maybe now of course).

Any idea if I'm stuck with another LG?

Hey "clevelandownz", as I mentioned to "JDThree", up until this morning, I was convinced that part # 661-7171 was a Samsung-only replacement display. So, PLEASE post back here when your repair is completed to let us know which display (Samsung or LG) that you got.

I've had mine since release, I'm on it about 16 to 18 hours a day, and I never had any display problems.  Last night, after several months, suddenly I'm getting it as well.  Thrilling...

It's the technology difference between LG and Samsungs.

All LGs will show IR, sooner or later.

Hopefully your replacement screen would be Samsung. Do note that to the repair guys.

I figured I should share my experience as well.

Received my custom configured rMBP on August 27th, and it was great for just slightly under a month.

Just as described, I started noticing the burn in/ghosting with the LG screen after 3-4 weeks of use. Called AppleCare and had an appointment set up with my local Apple Store for repairs since I was outside of the 14 day return policy.

BE WARNED, you will be without your machine for a few days. They told me 3-5 days. Took it in on a Friday morning, and received it back on a Tuesday evening. I'm in Michigan, and the repair center where it was serviced at is in Houston Texas.

The screen was replaced with a Samsung display, (Color LCD, LSN154YL01001)

Annoying, but glad to have the issue (hopefully) resolved.

What was the part # on the work order? 661-7171?

    Please let us know.

I had requested that specific part number when I took it in for repair. This was the item number listed:

    #620-5812

I could tell when I received the unit back was a different display. The color reproduction is actually a bit different than that of the LG display.

Off phone with apple support.  Turns out that there's a certified center closer than the nearest apple store (which is about a 40 minute drive) and it's about 5 minutes down the road.  Coincidentally, it's a place we rent server co location space from, I have a key and the code for their building.  So heading there now to let them verify it and get a screen on order.  At least this is one I'll be able to drop off and pick up the same day.
