Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I had requested that specific part number when I took it in for repair. This was the item number listed:

    #620-5812

I could tell when I received the unit back was a different display. The color reproduction is actually a bit different than that of the LG display.

So, was it Samsung or LG?

Hey man, I literally just opened the box from getting my repair back, and I was mortified to see this number (620-5812) as the item number of the part that was ordered. I was worried because the Samsung part that everyone seems to be getting is 661-7171.

However, I ran the terminal command:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and it IS a Samsung (LSN).

And, I can't tell a difference (besides the lack of IR).

Now, can someone tell me how I unsubscribe to this thread? I'm getting spammed by emails...

    Cheers

Well, I guess anyone in the south east Wisconsin area can know to avoid the idiots in the Racine repair shop...  I have a case number from Apple, they've confirmed it needs replacement, and is not anything that can be addressed by a software update, firmware, etc, that the only thing to fix it is to replace the monitor.  Pretty much verbatim from the Apple support person I talked to.  This place in Racine wanted to keep it for "a few days" to run diagnostics.  When all they had to do was look at the screen and let me show them the issue to confirm it, then they could've ordered the part and I would've happily brought it back then for them to swap.  Now I'll have to set up a genius bar appointment and show them and hopefully the store itself has dealt with enough of these to not be idiots about it and need days to run diagnostics on a known issue...  Too bad they couldn't just do a "recall" status type thing on it...  Save us people who shelled out the cash for one of these from having to do the stupid song and dance with repair centers once we can demonstrate the issue affects our machine...

i wrote an email to mr. cook about the retina issue (obviously) after my initial visit to the apple genius bar when they refused to provide any type of service at all. however, my issue was resolved the 2nd time. my rMBP "failed" the checkerboard test and got a brand new machine replacement. i am now on my 2nd retina and its a samsung. flawless.

so overall, my exp. with apple is average. i had sour tastes in my first apple visit / applecare phone calls but the later visits were above standard.

so in my email i wrote to mr. cook about how its a shame that the LG screens are defective / unfair for those who paid the same premium to our counterparts who received samsung screens.

the person over the phone was ready to solve my issue; however, i was busy at the time so i told him the issue has been resolved at the local apple store and i appreciate him taking the time to call me (to offer a fix).

I know in this store this particulair model is there for 2 months already on from 10 till 10 daily. Makes me wonder is this IR then really "that" bad if it dissapears for 90 a 95% in less then 2 mintues?

Those machines at the stores are not being used at all. My machine at 2 months in basically had IR on the screen as long as the static image was, i.e. if you left it on a screen for 3 min, you would have 3 min of IR. I beleieve Apple's own KB states this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455:

"5.  To clear the persistent image, allow the screen saver to run for approximately as long as the image was being displayed."

That said, I have static images on my screen for 10 min plus at a time, I just cannot see having to wait 10 min to use a clear screen again, maybe you are different.

Calibrated my Samsung looks just as good if not better than the best of 3 different LGs I had. I feel like the blacks are darker on Samsung and WAY brighter overall. Just my 2 cents not that it matters.

I'm thinking about placing an order.  It seems like a lot of Samsung screens are coming in and faulty LGs are being replaced with Samsungs.  I like the odds right now.  Are you guys happy with the build otherwise?  I hear people complaining about loose keys, scratched bodies, etc.

The two I received on Monday (week #40 according to Appleserialnumberinfo) were both Samsung and perfect in every regard so far (screen and body).

My rMBP is the most amazing machine I've ever owned. My only complaints are with the IR on LG displays and the way that Apple handled this mess. I've since received a replacement Samsung display, so I have no further complaints about the computer itself.

We've had at least one other person who received this part number and found it to be a Samsung display.

At this point I can't endorse it, but I've probably just been unlucky.  2 damaged unibodys, one very majorly (bent chassis), one scratched.

Hoping the third one will help put this behind me.

We can't tell the display from the Serial Number.

You would have to open it and run the terminal command or the application linked below to determine the display vendor:
