Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

We've had at least one other person who received this part number and found it to be a Samsung display.

Yup, two hopeful theories were struck down in the last week:

    1. LG being discontinued in favor of Samsung.
    2. 661-7171 being the Samsung part number.

Just returned from my appointment at the nearest apple store.  After falling in love with one of the female employees there, the guy fired up their test on my RMBP and confirmed the ghosting.  Now, I've got outstanding eyesight, and after that test I could *BARELY* see any ghosting.  But I could pull up the apple support page that shows the different product pictures across the top, let it sit there for a minute or two, then pull up anything else over that and you can CLEARLY see the images left behind from the support page.  So I wonder how many people who experience this issue and take it to the store are being told "there's no problem" becuase the way they duplicate the problem is NOT anywhere near as good at verifying the problem than something else would be.  Maybe the do that intentionally to limit the number of displays they "have" to replace...  I hope people who don't know better aren't just going home after being told "No, this one's OK" and just accepting the situation.

Regardless, my replacement screen is on order.  But the disappointing thing is that there is only one part number they can order - they have no special part number they can order to make sure you get the Samsung screen, so they can order a replacement screen but it's still a crapshoot as to which screen actually arrives to replace it.  Seems kind of stupid to me, if they know that the LG is more prone to this issue and the Samsung has shown itself to be almost completely reliable in this issue, why on earth would they even offer up the possiblity of an LG screen?  Just means they've increased their chance of having to do it AGAIN...

So I'll have to cross my fingers that the same girl is working again when I return, and that I get a Samsung screen...

And yes, 661-7171 is just that generic number of theirs for screen, is what I have on my repair order now, and means you can still get an LG, no way to know until it arrives which they actually receive...

I called Apple Care today and told them about my screen image retention isue. I was given the cold shoulder and was told to take it to an Apple Store. The nearest one is an hour drive away, which is very, very annoying. Am I expected to take 2 long trips to Apple Store just to get my screen fixed?

BTW, my screen model number is LP154WT1-SJA1.

    Eric

Yep, I have a 45 minute drive to the store near me as long as there's no traffic since it goes through the busiest part of the interstate in this part of the state.  Unfortunate, but since the useless "certified repair center" that's only 5 minutes away isn't competent enough to be trusted to find the power button, I didn't have any choice either...

I've got a LG for more than month and it's superb so far, no IR or dead pixels. I've checked regurarly since I got my rMBP. I might be just lucky ;)

Well, when I found out I have a LG, I was scared a bit regarding everything what was written here, but it really seems to be perfect. I ordered it at apple.com on the 26th of August and received on the 4th of Sept in Washington DC.

Don't worry, it will happen to him also, there's been a few guys that didn't notice anything until well into their second month.

Interesting read from August, still relivant as thanks to Apple, nothing has changed. Also mentions what IR is.

    http://www.extremetech.com/computing/134985-apples-new-retina-display-dogged-by- image-retention-increasingly-unhappy-users

Also, I believe someone here posted that they spoke to a another lcd manufacturer rep (I think) and that he said, there's nothing normal about IR, it's a problem with production.

So unless something at LG has changed I doubt any LG's will not eventually suffer the same IR fate.

I would say that none or very few people who are satisfied with LG screens would come here and write to you about it. When you are happy with your product you don't care about forums like this, generally speaking.

Thanks for making a good point, So then why are you here? Seems strange to me.

Anyway, you said you might be just lucky, I doubt you are. If you're being honest then you'll be here complaining soon enough either before or after you complain to Apple about the IR.

Horalko, I've had mine since release, and only started getting the IR yesterday.  I'm on it about18 hours a day and it runs 24/7, about the only time it's powered off is when it's in my bag on the 5 minute ride back and forth to my office.  So just keep an eye out for it, since you're unfortunately by no means out of the woods yet at 2 months...

Mine came about 6 weeks after purchase.

Keep a lookout for the area where your safari browser search box is.  Then swipe to mission control or anyother background with darker tones.  Is your "friend" there yet?

    ARGH!!!!

Man, this company is getting whacked!

Originally, I had setup for a return/REPLACEMENT of my last MBPr, which DID have IR.  It was also pretty dim, compared to an in store Samsung screen.  I would much prefer NO IR and brighter screen overall.

so, return setup, label sent, package sent, etc. But, I had to change the "ship to" address.  THREE APPLE MyAPPLe employees said I had to wait till they received the package and then I could change the SHIP TO for the REPLACMENT COMPUTER.

today I call to get status, and am informed that it IS NOT A REPLACEMENT but rather they are doing a refund and I need to order again.  WTW, I mean THREE PEOPLE told me that a replacement was being shipped.

So, since I had ordered this for my nephew off at collage (his rents don't have the cash for this stuff) it had an apple gift card, and was run at a discount.  Now, I have to have them cancel the card (since it was a promo) I have to RE-ORDER again, but have wasted over a week and now won't get the same discount promo that was in the initial TWO orders that both failed due to IR.  Does this make any else think, where have we gone?

I mean, I'm not asking for my broken iphone screen to be replaced for free, or repair my logic board out of warranty, Im just asking for you to TAKE my 2400$, and give me the computer I ordered in acceptable working order and if it DOESN'T WORK, then REPLACE it and don't make me go through hoops to make it right.

I think apple, unfortunatly, knows at this point that they are in the power position.  As someone who has been buying apple computers for over 35 YEARS NOW, I can tell you the relationship has changed.

I'm here just due to the reason I've already mention and because I realize that this forum does exist. And I am honest to you, I have no reason to lie. But I will keep my eye on it and if it showed up, I would inform you here.
