Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Anyone did especifically asked for a samsumg display when buying a rMBP?

I`m also waiting for some light on this issue from apple, or at least some kind of leak from someone inside, a "we are working on it" will work.

I'm looking for a replacement to my actual mbp and apple is just loosing the chance of selling one to me.

Before I hand in my MacBook for repair I will create a full copy of the SSD on an external USB HDD via CarbonCopyCloner (or SuperDuper). I'll give them a fresh install of OS X Mountain Lion and afterwards I will restore the cloned disk.

I think it is the easiest way without installing the whole system.

This method will only work with your OS X partition and Windows has to be cloned with a different tool. It may be necessary to recreate the partition via Boot Camp Assistant and restore the Windows backup afterwards.

Frocco, as others have said, several options for the mac side.  I generally use time macine since I've never had a probelm with it so far, but others have.  CCC (carbon copy cloner) and other third party tools out there will let you clone the disc.

You said you installed windows games, but did not specify if you're using boot camp, or just a virtual windows with Parallels or VMWare or something.  If you're using the virtual one, just make sure it's closed and do your backup since the virtual machine file will be caught in the backup to restore to the new system.  If it's boot camp, you'll want to get a program called winclone, from twocanoes.com

It used to be free, but went unsupported, then disappeared, and reappeared, and now is a supported pay model.  If you're using boot camp, it's well worth it, since you can image boot camp and restore as needed on a new system, something the mac clones won't do.

Oh, well written. "Steve would." is a very interesting finish and maybe you nailed it with that addition for some people.

I'm looking forward to hear about any response.

So, you have an LG from week 41. The big question is - are they any better now, has LG fixed the image retention? Is that possible at all, with the technology they use to make those panels? Will be very interesting to see if yours develops any problems over next days/weeks.

I've been following this thread for the last few weeks.  I finally decided to order an rMBP 2.6/16/512, and I should have it late this week / early next week.  I will post back when I know what screen I received.

I was hesitant to buy because of this thread, but I am looking to get into iOS development and I couldn't put off buying my first mac any longer.  I opted for retina because I'm confident that retina is the direction that all macs are going in the future, and being able to see native iOS resolution on the screen is extremely valuable for development (not to mention working in Xcode at 1920x1200).

I plan to just return my purchase until it's perfect (samsung, no yellow tint).  Should I be able to keep my rMBP while they send me a new one?  I guess I just have to ask?

Like many others, I've been following this thread from the beginning... and from the beginning, I've held off on purchasing my MBPr. It "appears" that things are getting better, but from what I've been reading here, it almost seems like the following is true:

LG = all have IR, BUT have a better, sharper, display than the Samsung (when not showing IR).

Samsung = no IR, but more likely to have dead pixels, light seepage, yellowish screen, etc... as well as the colors not being as accurate as the LG.

Am I way off base here or is the above fairly accurate?

And if it is accurate, is there really any reason to get my MBPr anytime soon?

I have had my MBP for years and am in need of a refresh, so this is more of a: "should I get one now, or wait longer" question, not an "Apple *****" comment.

    thanks everyone

Its a shame this thread is making people hesitate to purchasing a rMBP.   I have a week 33 LG unit, that doesn't show anything unusual.  Its extremely clear, bright, good white point.  During standard usage I notice no retention.  You can go out of your way and test for IR and barely see some if you hold a pattern fixed for a long long time, and then utilize a medium to dark grey pattern as a background.   Is this kinda like the case of people who worry about the slightest stratch on a new car, yep.   Its also a factor of cost, as some really are pushing themsleves to have something that is very hip, and useful, but like anything its just a expensive computer, its replacable, its repairable.  This on and on and on, that LG is evil and Samsung is good is laughable.  IMHO you can get a minor defect with almost anything you buy these days.   The same goes for any Samsung panel.   You still could have IR, its rare, but not so rare is light bleeding around panel edge, stuck or dead pixals, or tinted screens.  My advise just try the rMBP and see if it works out.  You have 14 days exchange, 1 year warranty, whats to worry about accept what people pointing out every little flaw in a product, that IMHO is very useful, especially if your a coder and like a 1920 x 1200 resolution at times.

I ordered an rMBP 2.3/16/512, and I should have it next week or the week after?.  I will post back when I know what screen I received. I hope it is a Samsung. A LG is going back.

Just a another example of why even buy the laptop if that's what you convinced yourself is a no go by this thread.

If you are past the 14 day mark, why not just wait until the problem with the IR is solved and then get it repaired, if you are within the 14 days and you can't live with the IR, send it back and just wait until the issue is resolved in production.

That only works if you don't absolutely need a laptop right now. I did it three times and stopped, upgraded my MBP and now waiting. If someone needs a laptop right now, then they have to keep trying.

With this IR problem, what's going to happen is, that you all are going to turn in your MBP's so many times, Apple will stop allowing the practice and then we'll never get any satisfaction.

That's their prerogative. Doubt they would ditch a longstanding and extremely popular policy out of spite. On the other hand if it wasn't for the complaints and returns they would have ignored it completely. Lastly, shut up and take it is counterproductive. If it wasn't for loads of returns we wouldn't be getting Samsung replacements, at least for majority of repairs. Seems like it's working.

This whole exercise of buying, turning back, getting an LG, turning it back etc and so on, is just so unproductive. What other company anywhere would continue to do that?  Yes let Apple know about the problems loudly and often but this revolving door practice is rediculous and unproductive.  i don't mean to jump on the pity party and the righous indignation, but its really gotten pretty silly. You can rile each other up all you want til your hair falls out, but its going to get fixed when it gets fixed.  Do you want it fixed right?  Or just throw another batch of screens that either have IR or are so yellow that people are turning those back?

Your speech is missing a critical fact: Apple has called this "normal" which we all know is not true.
