Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Actually, you didn't really warn me at all. There are people who have LG screens that are perfectly fine. This thread would be hundreds of pages long if every LG screen is faulty. Sure are quick to play "I told you so," aren't you?

Alright guys, I just confirmed that I have a LG screen using the terminal command posted earlier. My machine was manufactured week 31 (July) and I received it on July 30th. I've heard about the display burn-in issue before making my purchase online but I went ahead and got myself one anyway. In any case my screen doesn't experience any IR issues whatsoever. It has been day 2 now, but I will report back if I ever see the slightest IR on my display.

I would just like to let people know that I don't believe the problem has anything to do with the manufacturer, but rather the QC of the laptop itself. Apple has probably caught on by now and have made arrangements to fix the IR problem. Like I said before, I have a LG screen as my Retina Display, and it is absolutely gorgeous with no flaws or dead pixels. I just wanted to throw this out there so people don't need to discriminate against the brands and feel the need to return/replace/exchange their perfectly fine rMBP with one that has a specific model no. display.

Please note I'm NOT saying that you WON'T get a faulty display, but if you get a new batch, it will most likely be fine.

and I said you were wrong.

Saying I was "wrong" doesn't mean that you warned me. I did say I would report back if something was wrong with my screen, which I did. I don't know why you want rub it in so much.

He isn't rubbing it in you dunce, he's just sticking to his position that LG blows, which it does.

yes you can check by calling apple with your serial number on your invoice. that's what i did.

So if they tell you that you have the LG screen, what do you do?  If you say you want the Samsung, will they make it happen?

If you have the money I would say just immediately order another one online and return the LG screen once you get it. If not, wait til you get the computer and call 1800APLCARE and tell them you have ghosting issues and want an "advanced replacement."

Have a week 32, 2.6/16/512 set to deliver this coming week. I tried calling Apple Support to see if it was an LG or Samsung - after a lengthy time of checking he insisted it was neither, but an Apple Cinema Display. No idea how you got them to tell you the specific manufacturer as they seem about as knowledgable as what they read on the Apple Store website.

No, he was trying to prove that he warned me. And I'm not saying that LG isn't without its flaws, I just followed up with an update to my experiences with this rMBP and the replacement process. My case has convinced me that many LG screens are faulty. I'm trying to contribute (not saying Jerbz doesn't), rather than taking someone's old post to prove how they were wrong.

Here are teh exact words I would say.

"Hi, I'm calling because this is my **th computer and everytime I keep getting an LG and it always ends up having IR issues. I would like to tell you my serial number and then get the manufacturer of the display for my Retina Macbook Pro."

Was just wondering how accomodating they are to get you what you want and not waste time, because the replacement may be another LG, and a second replacement again may be LG, etc.  When you called and asked, did you luckily find out yours was a Samsung?

I returned my first rMBP that had an LG. My second order is still processing. Once it is ready to ship I will find out.

They can't put a Samsung screen on your computer even if they tried. They have a disconnection from California to China.

Edit: if they are telling you it's a cinema display, they are not smart enough or just don't know how to get to the information you are requesting. Call again and hopefully you get a different person on the line.

Haha - they claim it is Apple, of course! I'll try calling again and see.

After reading these posts I went back and checked my monitor manufacture by typing:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

Into terminal. Looks like my bad screen is an LG too. Bummer.

Sorry guys, it is my first Macbook... where do I  type in this command? How do I get there? Is it possible to do it wrong and damage the system in any way?
