Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You see, that's exactly my point. It's really up to the individual to be frustrated or not. They choose to be, and that's that. Just because something causes frustration and no satisfaction does not automatically mean everyone needs to react the same way. We are not programmed robots. Do you see my point now?

Instead of buying and returning have you guys ever tried to get them to change the screen?  I mean I don't know the ill effect of having your screen replaced by someone who isn't a disgruntle Chinese factory worker.

I think, if for whatever reason the Retina really fails on me, I would seriously consider the u500.

    @DomdiDom

I mean no disrespect.. but not all businesses revolve around "ethics" and "honesty," do not be so naive. Money is money, and large businesses like Apple most likely saw that if they did come out with the truth and offered to replace all machines, they would lose so much profit, and/or credibility. They'd rather cater to the minority group that actually cares about the IR with replacements, and let the ignorant be blissful with their machines. I find this business model to be perfectly business-like, and actually pretty darn smart; they don't give a **** if you're butthurt, they just care about the money. You just don't operate by what is "right" if you want to make the most profit, my friend. Simple economics. There is no argument to this.

I had my display replaced instead of the whole system. Pretty easy, simple, and quick.

That's why I won't argue, but that's also why I won't be their customer this time around and Asus and Best Buy share my money rather than Apple.

I stopped caring about how a business operated long ago; it just became too much of a bother, but to each their own. Cheers.

I wasn't putting words in your mouth. There seem to be enough of them there as it is. I was only making the point which was most logical from what you have been saying, which is that the display was your only deciding factor here, when, from my perspective, there are many more factors involved in making a purchase like this one.

Yes, the form factor and ecosystem were important TO ME. To you, not so much. Fine.

But you're the one who chose to come on here and continue to berate Apple for these problems. To what end? Do you think Apple will be swayed by you chosing Asus instead of staying with a Macbook?

I hope it's at least been cathartic for you.

This is why I will never understand some of these comments, especially people who are stuck doing a return > buy process.  If you are on your 4-5th rMBP you should either just stop and buy an ASUS/Lenovo which are both fine brands.  Or have the store replace the screen (with a Samsung like most of the posters seems to be able to confirm) within your 14-days, which would take them from 2-5 days depending on how busy they are, and if you still want to return the machine (for instance if you found out it is still an LG)ou can still do so.  Also the store I went to replaced the horrible paste job (he said he shouldn't be doing this) that was done at the factory.  My rMBP runs (35 degrees idle and 55-60 while under heavy load) much cooler than it was previously.

Not being frivolous ... but what's the display manufacturer of the u500?  Though unproductive, I've somehow developed a heighted awareness of panel manufacturers nowadays.

Berate? LOL ok and I guess it offended you that I was pointing out Apple's flaws in this thread concerning the IR problem? Why is that? The nerve of some people pointing out the truth.  Right? Did I ever not tell the truth about something? Of course not, because if I had, Apple would have deleted my posts.

You however, patheticly, have decided to make this thread about me. Grow up. Your lord and savior "apple" will be fine despite my "berating" them, LOL

"I hope it's at least been cathartic for you."

I'm sure not nearly as cathartic as it has bean for you to come to Apple's defense.

Please, can we stay on topic?

It is anyone's choice what he/she buys. And Apple, however it is great, it isn't the only great manufacture on the planet. And it is understandable people are ****** off enough to skip to another brand. No reason to bash each other for that.

I would like to see more people who received a new rMBP recently and what kind of display they have.

I understand your point, but we're not in any position to dictate whether one should or should not do anything. Maybe they have their own good reasons for wanting to get full replacements instead of screen replacements. Maybe they don't trust the geniuses to do work on their rMBP because they've had or have heard of problems of repairs further messing up the computers. Further, most here, that are actually that persistent, getting 4+ replacements, don't really prefer any other brands other than Apple. *wink* Additionally, I personally do not prefer Asus or Lenovo as well. What defines a fine brand depends on the individual. As I always say, "stop caring so much."

My LG screen details are as follows:

    Color LCD

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN23860EUJF49KAP

I too am wondering if the LGs displaying problems were a "bad batch" and whether the current LGs they're using are improved?  I guess nobody can say until the new LGs exhibit problems.  Out of the box, my screen is fine and doesn't show any IR, even if I leave things up for a while with no screen saver.

I'm considering taking a gamble and using this screen until / when / if there are problems, then taking it for replacement then.  But hopefully, they may have corrected the fault with earlier LGs.  Here's hoping.
