Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Terminal is the mac equivalent of command prompt in windows. Just type in 'Terminal' in spotlight and you will see it, click on it and a black windows will come out (sort of like command prompt). Copy and paste the command into terminal using command + C and command +V then hit enter. Terminal will present you with details about your LCD screen, there you will see a line that starts with either LP or LSN with LP = LG, LSN = Samsung. It will not damage your system as long as you enter the correct command. Make sure that you quit terminal after you use it to prevent from possible misuse and damage to your computer. Cheers!

Noticed some burn in on my LG Screen as well as a pink/red hue from the right side of the screen (and pink apple logo!).

Called AppleCare directly and had the following process

    1) Spoke to regular advisor, who escalated me to senior advisor

    2) senior advisor said cannot do a replacement over the phone since I am in Canada, but can book me a Genius Bar appointment where I should give them the case # and go from there.

    3) Mentioned to the advisor that I was within my 14 day return period, and if anything could be done.

    4) He directed me to a senior advisor at the Apple Online Store

    5) Spoke to senior advisor at the apple online store who set up a replacement, and noted that I can return my unit within 14 days of recieving the new one to prevent any charges.

Didn't take a CC as I presume he had one on the invoice already as I bought at the Apple Online Store.

Is this the same Advance replacement many are talking about here?

He said I should recieve email confirmation within 24-48 hours and a new unit should be shipped within 3-5 days at the most.

I ordered my rMPB June 12, got it late June, and I have an  OH-so-dreaded "LG" screen. After a month of use, there is still no hint of image retention. I check weekly. This is by far the brighest, clearest display Ive used. There might be something to LG screens having more issues than their Samsung counterparts, but to suggest ALL LG screens is pretty ridiculous.

I have a week 30 (number 648) MBPR with an LG screen :

    Color LCD

    LP154WT1-SJA1

I have left a safari window open on a black bacground with the brightness turned up maximum for 20 minutes.

When I minimise it i see no evidence of persistence.

Does this fault sometimes develop over time ?

Does anyone else have an LG screen that dosent seem to have the problem (i.e. was it just a batch or QC problem earlier on ) ?

Don't be fooled by the "black" background test like I was.  I have an LG screen (June, week 24) and I didn't think I had an issue either because I was testing using a black background.  Fast forward a couple of weeks and now I have an advanced replacement on the way.  To test for Image Persistence, you need to set your background to Dark Gray.  You will not see it with a black background.

Hoping my next one has a Samsung screen.

well I have tried a dark grey background now (though how dark is dark enough I am not sure :-) ) and I still can't get any evidence of persistence on my MBPR with the brightness up full using Safari opened then minimising it to reveal the dark grey desktop.

At this point, I suppose I should wonder if I can't make the persistence show it means my LG screen is ok, or even if it does have the problem, if i can't detect it it is unlikely to be a problem for me, unless this is something that gets worse with time (though i saw a post earlier in this thread that suggested the opposite, that LED ghosting reduces with use)

I agree with you, I'm sure LG makes some decent screens but statistically less than Samsung by the results here

    DAY 3

My week 31 build rMBP with LG screen (16/2.3/256) has no signs of image retention.

Looks great to me so far. Either way my apple care should cover it so no worries

well today I took my retina mbp to the apple store. I asked one of the employees "do you know if any of these display units are samsung display?" he replied witha  condesending tone "NO and there is no way to tell" I looked at him a bit puzzled and said "yes there is, it's a simple terminal command" I quickly input the command (by using copy and past from this thread page 13 thanks!) on 3 units, the third was a samsung. I said see this is a samsung screen. he looked ******. then said "well if you buy one and don't like your screen you can just return it" I said "yeah well thats why I am here. I wanna compare a samsung with my LG screen" and pulled out my godtop I mean laptop. he frowned again.

I held them side by side (Now mind you I have had no issues with my screen yet but was a tad underwhelmed by the whites when I opened it up for the first time)

Low and behold the samsung is clearly sharper and brighter whites.

I said see? I had terminal open full screen on both so u could see the contrast in screen....

He says "they look the same to me" to which I condesendingly replied "oh ok you must not care about photography I'll be back later to exchange it. thanks"

and left. (I'm not ready to swap mine now as I am still installing and getting all my kontakt and vst libraries correct.) I plan on calling apple later in the week and setting up an advanced replacement.

the difference isn't huge. but it's there, once u see it you can't unsee it.

and it lends creedence to what people have been saying about the LG screens

spoke too soon....it has done it now...needed a safari page with colours on,the apple store worked ...and left a ghost image on my screen

Now I need to decide what to do, as I gather some people who sent it back got a new one with the same problem.

From what I've been reading, it seems like MOST (not ALL) 2.6/16 rMBPs end up with the LG screen. I have tried to reasearch and most of the base models have a Samsung display...

Well at least I hope that's right. I am waiting for my rMBP to be delivered tomorrow since it's been sitting at my local sorting facility since Friday. I am pretty busy working most of the day & getting ready to go on vacation so I might not be able to unbox it until Thrusday because I want to savor the moment lol

I ordered a base model with the EDU discount. Tight on money I didn't get Apple Care (I know really stupid considering this is the LEAST repairable laptop ever), but I go back to school soon, and since I do photography I wanted to get the computer ASAP.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out!

You are right in not purchasing Apple Care.

If something is wrong with the laptop you can always return it within two weeks of delivery.

You can always purchase Apple Care after you know that your laptop has no problems whatsoever.

Question. For those who have had a advance replacement. Is there any sort of email confirmation? Or when do you receive confirmation of any kind?

Talked to them this morning and no correspondence since!
