Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

That's the main issue. If you could be sure that Apple would replace the screen, waiting until after the 14-day NQA return window has passed would be a safe bet.

The shortage of good Samsung displays and IR-prone LG displays might also explain why Apple has yet to refresh their iMac and Macbook lines - even as other manufacturers had refreshed to Ivy-bridge CPUs.

Perhaps, but Samsung gets a lot more money from Apple through component purchases. I think Samsung is eager to sell to Apple; it's Apple that is not eager to lock in to one company for supply (and that makes perfect sense from a business point of view).

Still, I wish Apple would get more displays from Samsung. I like Samsung displays over LG; as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I replaced my LG TV for a Samsung for a reason. (Though interestingly, the LG had a wider field of view.. ).

I agree. On the BOMs for the products at my work, each part (if possible) must have at least 3 sources. However, they MUST be form-fit-and-function exactly the same. The Samsung and LG displays don't meet this criteria. Regarding the field of view, I noticed that when I had my LG display replaced with a Samsung display due to IR. It's far less of an issue on a laptop than on a TV though, because usually you're the only person looking at it and you're always looking at it straight on.

Large companies like Samsung Electronics should and would not let grudges or vendettas get in the way of business.

Business is business, money is money, and emotions are emotions.

I personally would not like to lose $ over a grudge.

Further, Manufacturing is a separate subsidiary from Anycall. Their decisions will not be affected by Anycall and that's what they announced as well.

How eager would you be to strike a manufacturing deal with a company that just sued you for $1-billion?

I think Apple was a little too eager to burn bridges with companies that it characterized as enemies (Samsung for copying Apple's technology and Google for enabling them to do so with Android). The result: crummy rMBP screens and crummy iOS maps. Nice move Apple. Haven't you ever heard the saying, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". Apparently not.

You're probably right.

However, this whole thing might provide Samsung with some leverage, or at least a small bargaining chip.

Samsung might be willing to give Apple a better deal on components if they were willing to settle out of court for less than the $1-billion they were awarded (which Samsung will obviously appeal). Who knows? Maybe all this jiggery-pokery that Apple is engaged in with the LG/IR issue is simply to buy time while they work out something with Samsung. All I know is that it ***** for unhappy customers with image-retaining LG displays.

Ok, so I calibrated my screen and set the white point around where yellow changed to blue. This was at 6700k.

My iMac mid 2011 is calibrated as well.

Either my iMac is yellow, or this rMBP samsung display is just pink.

I'm going to lean towards my rMBP being pink because my iMac looks "normal" to my eyes. Just white. Pure white.

What you describe between the monitors is why you get more accurate white points when you use an external calibration device such as Spyder 4 or the eye 1. 

I don't know man, you sound rather paranoid to me.  You can take this for what its worth:  I don't care about Samsung or LG or Apple.  I'm just a consumer like you. I don't work for any of these companies and no company that is associated with them.  Go look through the posts.  I've seen several people say they had to return their Samsungs because of yellow tints and some had spots and light bleeds.  Again, here is my position so you will understand. 

1.     As reported here, there seems to be IR on many LG screens and some seem to have it worse than others. Regardless of claims on this thread, we really do not know what percentage of monitors have it except for unsupported speculation. I have also agreed that regardless of Apples' claim, that IR is definately a problem and not normal.

2.     So far Samsung screens don't exhibit IR, but some have said they have had yellow tinted screens and some have had bad pixels come up in a fes days and various light bleeds.  They seem to have different problems than the LG's but also many who have the Samsungs have reported they like them and have no problems.

3.     I have suggested that if you have already passed the 14 day window that you report the problems to Apple so they know they have a problem.  Then stick around and find out when they actually have a solution.

4.     I have also said that it seemed to me to be counter-productive to play the screen lottery because so many of the people on this thread who have now gone through 2, 3 or more screens and are still having problems.

5.     I have also said that my LG screen has some IR but it hasn't gotten worse and has not prevented me from doing anything including the photography post-processing that is one of the main uses of the computer, but that I'm watching it carefully.

6.   Should it get worse, I will work around the IR and will probably wait a few months until I know that I will get a decent screen regardless of the maker of the screen and give Apple and its suppliers time to engineer the proper solution.  I admit I may be naive that Apple will try to solve this, but in using Apple for several years, I've seen problems happen and get handled over time, always, so I believe they will fix this situation. 

Now is that so bad?  Do and think what you want. But attacks on me for having a different opinion than you is just bad form.

I agree. My Spyder 4 made a huge difference. It's cool because it lets you toggle back and forth between your previous settings (default in my case) and the new ones. With the old settings, a black and white photo looks a little bit on the sepia-side when compared to the new settings. It's a bit pricey, but worth it if you do any kind of graphic arts related work.

I have hit the the LSNxxxxxx lottery ! I ordered my standard build Macbook earlier today for in store pick up. Then I starting reading about the LG problems and started worrying. When I got to the Apple store I ask if I could open it and check to see what display it had. They were completely fine with it. The guy that was helping me has heard of the LG issue.  But me being a long time PC user I was unable to correctly enter the terminal command and he wasn't much help. So I left and figured I had 14 days to return it. But when I got to work I finally was able to enter the command correctly and the was the beautiful LSNxxxxxx. I this machine doesn't make me regret buy a Mac.

Speculation? What percentage?

If someone goes through 6 LGs and they all have IR, even at 50% defective rate that means 1/2^6 = 1.56%. Since we have so many reports of multiple consecutive faulty LGs, that makes it statistically improbable that there are non-IR LGs out there.

If you have problems with math, then read Apple's own support article that calls this an expected and awesome feature of their technology. Calling basic math and the manufacturere's own admission "speculation" is meaningless.

The so called "Attacks" on you is for misdirecting other users by calling mathematics and Apple's own engineering specifications "speculation".

I have just dropped my base model rMBP for repair at my nearest Apple Store. I had an LG display with significant ghosting/IR. I will update when I get it back. Crossed fingers for a flawless Samsung display. First replacement! Bought my laptop on August 9th.
