Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

    Hi guys,

Just ordered my macbook pro retina on Friday last week (August 3rd). Do you know if Apple is still shipping the retina's with LG screens or have they recognised the issue and are only shipping out samsungs?

Mine will be a 2.6 with 16gb ram.

Looking forward to the new laptop, but at the same time preparing myself to have to send it back a couple of times. Hoping I can hang onto it if I have to get it replaced due it being an LG.

First of all, give the guys a break. Most of them are 18-23 or so and are just trying to do their jobs. They don't have your master photographer's eye and couldn't see the difference, and that's all they said. They also obviously are unaware of some random string of Terminal code found in a forum on page 13. I understand its frustrating that they weren't knowledgable about this, but at least be fair.

Second, I am starting to wonder how widespread this issue is. I am planning on buying a rMBP soon and now I'm nervous. I understand that this forum is mostly people who have had a bad experience, but do you guys think this issue really represents a large proportion of the rMBPs being sold? If so, I am going to hold off. I am looking for a subjective opinion, not a hate column from someone who has had a bad experience. I'd really appreciate it.

There is no way to say that. I'm week 30 and there is a lot of people with both Samsung and LG in that week. And another thing is that Apple will never stop using LG ever. They will never stuck in one supplier. They did it for years with SSD and other LCD panels. They will continue to do this no matter what we want.

Bottom line, you have choice to return and get another one. I really one to do that but I have Samsung LCD and I'm loving it. It's way better than the others in the store. (I want to return because I have 2.3 and now you can customize your CPU as well in baseline. it wasn't like this when I ordered on 25 July.) But I wont return it. It's not worth it.

I hope yours be the Samsung

Well Apple just called me back after I raised an online support request yesterday.

They asked me a few questions about the image retention, and gave me the option of going to an apple store to have it looked at or a replacement order.

So now I have a replacement ordered, and two emails coming, one about the replacement delivery date (which they are shipping priority) and one on collection of the defective MBPr.

After 1 2011 MBP 15", 2 iPads, 4 iPhones and various peripherals, this is my first problem with an Apple product, and must say I am happy with the way they approach replacement, no fuss and an apology for my inconvienience.

Now I just hope I get a Samsung screen on the new one....or at least one without the retention problem.

One last question for those with advanced replacement.

Looking at my online order status I see the following

The charge on the new machine is -1.20 then a 1.20 recycling charge (Canadian Gov. Charge) so it nets at 0.00.

It says available in 5-7 days shipped Expedited. Do I have to wait in the normal queue or will this be expedited?

Also, the return label says returned by August 20th. This is 14 days from today (the advanced replacement was entered in today). Is this what it should be- or 14 days from when I receive the computer?

There was a report of the Yellow screen just a few days ago on a brand new rMBP so it was either a leftover from the LG/Sharp screens or Apple is still producing and shipping rMBPs with the bad screens.

If its like mine they are shipping it priority, so no you don't wait in the queue.

I waited 1 month for my 16 GB, 500 GB SSD unit, now the replacement will take approximately a week shipped from china to uk :)

    Hi, new in the forum.

Thanks to everyone sharing this much information.

Have had my MBPr now for a few weeks after having some problem getting hold of it from B&H in NYC. Just discovered, first of all, a dead pixel and then with some help from this forum that I have the LG screen and the ghosting issue too...

How have all of gotten in contact with Apple support? Have no Apple store in Sweden where I live and there doesnt seem to be any way of emailing them!? Haven't got that much of a response on the phone apart from pointing me in the direction of getting it serviced. As in giving it up and waiting two weeks...

Have made up my mind, after reading all your stories, that I will fight to get a replacement as soon as possible! Not too happy having spent this much money on a product that would really be great if this was resolved.

    Cheers

Well ****... wouldn't you know it. I tested it again this evening and I left the screen up for a good 30 minutes with Chrome open on google and there it was on the grey background.

Calling for a replacement ASAP tomorrow morning. This has become my only machine, so I've got to get the advanced replacement.

It's too bad, because this LG panel is absolutely gorgeous with no other issues at all.

Ok so I couldn't wait to open my rMBP & it's definitely something worth waiting for. I ran the command and unfortunately I got an LG. However, I'll still run some tests on it and give LG a shot. I do however, plan on taking it to a local apple store & comparing it to a samsung...

Geez like! Sounds like these are coming off a production line with the worst quality control measures in Apples history. Or this is the only place anyone is complaining, in which case 3 -5 problems a day is nothing

When I called to report the problems with my first rMBP they had me run a white screen test for a few hours to see if it would clear things up. It didn't, but while doing the test I discovered a "bright spot" on the screen that, once see, could not be unseen. The brighter that area of the screen was, the brighter the bright spot would be.

As frustrated as I am about the problem, I'll be fine as long as it eventually gets fixed. After all, Apple is pushing the boundary of what is possible with current technology, so it's not too surprising that they are running into some bumps along the way. It's also understandable that, barrying very widespread testing with hundreds of people, they might have missed this problem since it only shows up with a portion of the screens and even then, many people would have tested under conditions that wouldn't highlight the issue (and even then, you might overlook it if you were focused on testing other areas of functionality).

But for what we're paying, we should expect the screen to be top-notch...and hopefully it will be eventually.

Ah, the pain of being an early adopter of new technology.

Guys how much dark gray we are talking about? People who've seen any issues (dead pixels or IR) can you explain tom how you choose your dark gray. Is it the one in Solid Colors enough to test or you should make it customize?

    Thanks
