Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Oh oh.. Today for the first time I lifted my laptop from the desk to discover the bottom has a huge dent of 0.5 inch I am so dissapointed with Apple's quality control.

    So to sum up.

I have a perfect screen, but specks of dust behind the glass left side. A big 0.5 inch dent at the bottom.

What to do now? The thing is, personally I can live with the dent, However I am used to sell my laptops every 1,5 years and I can always sell it in nick condition. The potential buyer will think I miss-abused the laptop

I think at some point someone has to ask if some of these notebooks (like yours) are being damaged before or after they're built. To be more blunt, are these workers that we've been seeing in the news that are very upset doing the apparent damage on purpose and/or being careless on purpose. I mean, a .5" is not small thing to me on a notebook like that, it takes a nice shot I would think.

Oh almost forgot, still waiting for an answer to this

I think I'll keep posting this until Apple thinks of an answer.

For those that want to buy into Apple's logic about this IR being "normal" or a "feature" and "awesome" has anyone asked them why then is it not an awsome normal feature right out of the box? I mean I've only read 1-2 posts from people saying they had IR right away and for most it takes a few weeks and some people don't have it at all.

So according to Apple's logic of the silly. People with Samsungs, should be returning their notebooks because they don't get the awesome normal feature of IR. No?

I think mine is damaged after the build by DHL. The dent is straight where the charger in the box is located underneath. I think the package for the rMBP is bad, and not as protective as the ones for the cMBP.

I have no idea bout the dust behind the glas....

Okay, so I've had a few hours to get used to this Sammy (and to cool down), and I've started to get used to it. Sure it's a bit yellow, sure it bugs me, but it's bugging me less. Though I do want to add that changing the white point in calibration does not solve anything. Even when I forced it all the way to literally blue (around 7800) it still had that yellowey...feel. Like, as if there was an ultrathin yellow film over the screen. Grey is where you can see the yellow most. And I'm pretty sure the screen is yellower on the right side than it is the left...

The LG screens appear superior in every way except for IR. Would it be dumb to go back to the Genius Bar and ask for an LG?

This is an overly generalized statement.  Of the two Samsung displays I had they had zero issues.  Calibrating my displays to 6700 turned the screen from slightly warm to blue so it was no where near as yellow as yours was.

Use the silly logic to your advantage.

First off, if according to them IR is a feature....why do they have a test to determine the severity of your IR.

Secondly if the genius refuses to exchange your rMBP because it passed the test....wouldn't that mean that you don't have IR and that you are missing a feature and therefor have a faulty retina display and can ask for an exchange?

They way I see it, either way, pass or fail the test...you can force them to give you a new screen.

I have yet to try this in practice....would like to see if this logic works.

Well I just got my laptop back, it's a Samsung screen.

    I regret it.

I just cannot get the white to be, well, WHITE. It's driving me nuts, I'm feeling like I should have just dealt with the IR, since that LG screen was phenomenal otherwise. The repair itself was good though, looks like no scratches, I had a clicky hinge before, now that's fixed. But...eh... yellow.

Actually, the average Samsung "yellow" is closer to the true color of "white" than the LG screen. It's just that we've been seeing so many badly calibrated LED displays that a blue tint seems "white" for our brains.

At least that's what my colorimeter tells me of the 7 LG screens I had vs the 1 Samsung I have now.

From someone who grew up in a graphic design studio what hocheung20 says is true. If your seeing what I think your seeing that actually means your seeing a good screen. The fact that the Samsungs look so differnt in color is yet another reason why the LGs are so bad even without the IR.

On closer inspection of my last (3rd) replacement with an LG screen, I can see extremely light traces of IR.

What I'm going to do now is ring Apple tomorrow and tell them I want a screen replacement as I think practically guarantees that I'll get a Samsung replacement. I can't get another straight machine replacement as this is my last and the only alternative is to get a refund which isn't an option as I explained earlier in this thread.

I am going to insist that the repair is pre-authorised, however, as I think it'll be very hard to show the Genius where the IR is and I don't want an 80 mile round trip wasted if they refuse due to them not being able to see it. Is this possible do you know?

    The machine is otherwise perfect and is a week 41 2.6 / 16 / 512.

Other reason I don't want another replacement machine is that I'm pretty certain the vast majority of new builds are being shipped with LG screens now.

Alright.. I tried to live with this IR. But then I started to notice this. Personally this is the worst screen I've ever seen on a Retina display.. I send a letter to Apple in Cupertine last week and asked for a replacement because in the Netherlands they are not willing to help me anymore except giving me more repairs.. IMG_0228.JPG

Apple should be ashamed for not giving any response at all to us.

Hope they will respond to my letter with a good solution. If not, then I'm done with Apple and will sell my MacBook and buy a Samsung netbook because I cant use this for my work. It will be my last Apple product ever ):

I would agree. The very first thing I thought to myself after turning on my replacement rMBP screen (a Samsung) was, Wow, that screen is white.

Back home, where I run the brightness around 50%, it looks a bit more warmer but still a nicer temp. than my LG.

What if the screen looks eerily pinkish, on top of it being on the yellow side?

You have a hardware problem. Probably with the blue sub pixels. You should get your unit serviced.

... Assuming you've tried to calibrate the display. If so, it doesn't hurt to make a Genius Bar appointment.

I just cancelled my order for a 2.6/16/256 because I read on macrumors that they are going to tweak the rmbp soon fixing heat dissipation and a few other things. Do you think it would be wise to wait for that to happen (supposedly happening when the 13 inch comes out) or do you think I should just forget about it and order? I don't have a computer right now btw.
