Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

Read your response, Dom, and read my original post. I recall writing to suggest that people should not automatically send in LG displays, immediately dismissing it because the terminal output reads LP. Further, they're assuming getting a Samsung screen will solve all their problems, but in reality, it won't. Sure, their IR issues will be fixed, but what about everything else?

I personally am dissatisfied with both companies because my original LG display had terrible IR issues. I, like many others, thought a Samsung display would solve my problems, but it only made things worse as I ran into the problem of mura, yellow tint banding, pinkish whites, etc. which were all not apparent in the LG display.

However, I saw that one of the display models in the store had an LG screen that was almost perfect with the exception of very minor IR which I really had to look for to notice (after checkerboard for 10 minutes) and it went away very quickly. The whites were actually satisfying compared to the Samsung to the left of it, and another faulty (major IR problem) LG to the right. Further, I noticed that some people on this thread were saying their LG basically looked fine with extremely hard to see IR, but everything else was pretty much perfect.

This brings me to my original point, that if you have a pretty much perfect LG display with hard-to-notice IR, then don't dismiss it for a Samsung without giving it enough thought, because chances are you will end up with a faulty Samsung display, like me and many others.

Now the nasty remarks were started by YOU, for really no reason, and all your posts above are just snide remarks, personal insults, and suggestions that I somehow am an Apple employee or someone who has LG interests. (?) Then you go on further to insult my appearance, which the picture is probably not mine to begin with, and saying I have a 'disorder.'

I am just trying to help the mislead people in this forum from getting more faulty displays just because of a pretense that ALL LG displays are faulty no matter what, and that Samsung displays are perfect. If you want to go personally insulting people, while continuously making yourself look like a raging fool, feel free, I'll just be sitting here with some popcorn. If you want to have a reasonably intelligent argument, try again, but try not to add those insults, but instead come up with logical statements.

P.s. I am personally embarassed that my own country's two top electronics companies' products are so sub-par.

To be fair, the image retention, although noticeable when you switch to a dark grey background, didn't really become an isssue until I was told about it. Then I looked for it, then I kept on switching to a grey background to see how bad it was. Then it drove me crazy.

However, I'm happy with how it was resolved by Apple and I haven't had any other issues.

Ron, like I said, I am only referring to those who have an otherwise perfect unit, with just extremely minor IR that is only visible in extenuous circumstances, to try to keep a hold of it instead of immediately sending it back for a supposedly-perfect-Samsung.

If you have QC issues like those, then it's a nobrainer that you should be complaining and getting replacements. I have reasonable belief, from scouring this thread, that if you call Apple, they'll be more willing to cater to your circumstances than Geniuses at a physical Apple store... But everyone's miileage may vary, who knows... Apple is so unreliable these days.

This is comming from a long time Apple fan with just about every new release of Macbook for the last 4-5 years. I just returned my retina macbook pro. This is my first and only return of an Apple product in my whole life!!!

For the record, that is not me. I admit, his name is almost identical to mine with an exception of one letter. I live in Vancouver, and I'm also quite younger than the guy that you're referring to.

Enjoy away, the rage was all yours and the insults began with yours to me, why? probably because I had the gall to challenge your opinion. You're comical. Again, don't insult then make the rules of how it should go, and if you can't even recognize you're insulting someone then you have more issues than I originally thought.

Really? you can't have it both ways, You tell people to not dismiss the LG's automatically but then say "everyone's mileage may vary, who knows... Apple is so unreliable these days." That's not consistent is it? The whole reason people are returning them right away is because they can't trust Apple. I don't know what Apple was like before these rmbp's but based on this thread I agree that apple unreliable. Frankly, calling them unreliable is being charitable in regards to the handling of the rmbp problems.

By the way, for those of you that are returning every 2 weeks, Apple gave me another 2 weeks to ship my retina macbook pro to them from the time I initiated my return. Theoretically you can keep your macbook pro for 4 weeks instead of 2. Please verify this for yourselves. Personally I don't plan on buying and returning. I am going to wait to see if this all gets ironed out first.

May I ask if you even own an rMBP?  Oh, seems like you don't. All you've done is read posts in a forum and bash Apple based upon these posts. You've absolutely zero experience in this, you don't even know how any of these issues actually look like in person. Why are you even here? You've no right in arguing over a product's faults that you didn't even experience first hand. Wow, just wow. I've been wasting all this time and brain cells in arguing with a nobody. Shame on me. That's the most intelligent thing to do under the circumstances IMO. Personally I'm hoping it happens within the next 2 months but I doubt it will happen before next summer.

It seems to me like you should stay out of this one if you don't even have any personal experience with this.  At a lot of different forums, there are people that try to talk about and recommend gear that they have no experience with, and it's just a waste of everyone's time.

Obviously the safest thing to do now is to not buy an rMBP unless you want to take a risk.  That said, srhwang is right that the LG display is the lesser of two evils if you get a good one.  He has proven empirically that the Samsung has more problems and more severe problems - a small amount of image retention is not as big of a deal as the problems he had with his Samsung display.  For people that are already stuck with an rMBP, they need to make an informed choice as to whether it's worthwhile to keep rolling the dice.  If you have an LG display that isn't totally fubared then you should probably stick with it.

Yes, the fact that Samsung's displays are equally as prone to having major issues means that an LG should not be automatically dismissed without a good amount of testing. An LG can be either almost perfect, or have a medley of issues. A Samsung could be almost perfect, or have a medley of even more issues. It seems there's a relatively slim chance of getting an almost perfect display on either side, so it goes back to my point that you should give an LG some consideration before rolling further rolling units just for the sole purpose of getting a Samsung.

I've gone through two Samsung displays, and one LG display myself, and tested five other LG units and one other Samsung unit. The three Samsungs were faulty with mura and tinting on the sides, with sub-par viewing angles. There was one LG that was just perfect in every way except a VERY minor IR issue that was barely noticeable after 10 minutes of having the checkerboard burn in, and it went away after not even a minute. The six other LGs were terrible.

for folks working on graphics, problems associated with either brands are still unacceptable.  And wait a sec... why does this thread even exist if Apple's QA had remained excellent?

Case in point, my 8-year-old 19' View Sonic monitor is still kicking:  No IR, No Mura, No Yellowishness, no dead pix, no bleeding.  It just works(sounds familar?).

Come'on Apple, show some progress!

Hey Thanks Corey.  I think I will get one. I have used the built in  Apple calibration and the screen looks great, but I have to submit stuff now and again and also have stuff printed so it helps to have a calibration unit to do it "by the numbers" as I can depend on the results without a lot of re-printing.
