Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Tests within spec. They pulled that one on me too and man it really burns me. I think your response should be that if that is the case why does their 'spec' allow for inferior performance when compared to previous generation machines? Second, remind Apple that the consumer IS the spec. WE specify if the machine operates within OUR specifications for OUR purposes and if not, we have the option of returning it and/or going to a different technology altogether. This 'in spec' rhetoric is a typical symptom of a corporation forgetting that they are the servant and not the master.

It's likely to be released at around the same time as the rMBP was this year. Which is June.

So I'm hoping for that, but seriously saddened that I'm gonna have to pass on a product I really really wanted, and wait until the second generation. It's like Santa Claus coming down the chimney on christmas eve, saying "Nope, no gifts for another 8 months."

    GUESS WHAT?!?!

I went to the Apple Store yesterday to view the 13" rMBP in person. Someone was using them so I hopped on the 15" that I'm looking to get. Ran the Terminal command....LG. Went to the next one. Ran the terminal command. Samsung. So they have both on display. Which is good just knowing the Samsung's still exist in the stores.

That said (and this is the tricky part), when the SAME terminal command was entered on the 13"....NADA. Nothing. Unless there's a tweak to the command I don't know (cuz I don't really know terminal like that), they have BLOCKED the display-manufacturer terminal command from the 13". I tried some variations too....one for the MacBook Airs that was slightly different as well as a couple different variations I found online. So that *****.

One good piece of news that I will reiterate based on discussions w/ a friend at Apple. RIPLEY DOES EXIST AND YOU CAN, REPEAT, CAN USE IT TO FIND OUT THE DISPLAY TYPE PRIOR TO UNBOXING THE MACHINE!!!! I've been told otherwise by many, and actually the same by a store manager in NYC. You have to speak with a Genius, not necessarily the store managers. They will, however, have to go S/N by S/N and see whether there is a LGDxxxxxxxxxx or SECxxxxxxxxxx prefix. Obviously, the LGD is LG. SEC (I think) stands for Samsung Electronics Company. So keep searchin.

Obviously if you don't care about the IR on LG and it doesn't affect your work, do your thing. I'm a graphics designer and can't worry about palletes in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. getting 'retained' while working. Keep it goin.

Anyone hear more about the 'unannounced, behind-the-scenes hardware update' for the 15"?

I just tried the german test on my LG.

It's not very visible after 1 minute, but I suspect this test to be enhanced somehow to avoid the IR issue.

The 3 minutes, then the 1 minute as well as the gray selected are, I think, choosen to dim the issue and make customer believe that nothing's really wrong.

Simply from writing this post, I can cleary see the URL bar when going back to my grey wallpaper.

I'll call apple tomorrow and try something, again...

Well, actually it seems to be a lot of the same people here on a great majority of the posts.  Its hard to say how many actually have a problem.  Just because a couple of hundred people are telling everyone in the world, over and over about the problmes they are having doesn't mean that "thousands and thousand" are having display problems.  Just a thought.

For every complaint here, there are 1000 complaints out there. Average users don't go to web forums, they go to Apple Store, Best Buy or whereever they bought their stuff. There's a dozen new complaints here every week, you've chosen to ignore them.

The fact the you are concluding the exact opposite of what happens in real world is very telling.

Yes, the terminal command seems to have stopped working. Which is interesting because it even works on my 2007 MBP.

The lenghts Apple goes to hide their obvious display defects...

I have rMBP (LPxxxxxx screen) since August. I noticed IR a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Before I guess I just haven't paid attention to this issue, though I'm UI designer and software developer.

Since that time I had some testing and found out IR appears in about a minute and disappears in about a minute or so.

For a longer period of time, I leaved chessboard for 30 minutes on my rMBP and iPad 3 (one of the first retina iPads, so probably with Samsung display), and both had IR that completely disappeared in about 9 minutes. iPad had much smaller IR by the way.

I decided to wait what happens next and change my rMBP if things go worse or if Apple not use any program way to minimise the problem (like using every 60th frame as a reset picture that won't allow crystals struck).

Same here in Canada the Terminal Command is blocked in Apple Store Demo Laptops here - at least to find out if you have a LG or Samsung screen, but I was told that this was to stop people from causing havoc with the 4 or so unattended Macbook Retina display Laptops.

    @Nqjudo

    @Peter van Broekhoeven

Yes, Apple is really slipping with this cobbled-together policy that mostly serves to annoy customers.

However, they will see sense, but you have to be firm. I am now typing this from what I hope to be the final screen on this rMBP -- a Samsung ( as noted by the script ).

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM237703KXF49HBS

The fact Apple is only supplying Samsung screens can be interpreted as a tacit admission of problems with LG displays. However, the decision to continue with LGs in the 13" should be seen in the light of their deadlines in manufacturing - it was likely made months or even years prior to the emergence of the issue among users. I saw a news item yesterday which suggested Apple finalised plans to construct the iPad mini in 2010, for example.

As to the 13" using a different codestring, the new screens will have to have that information somewhere in the revised ioreg output. Typical proprietory / obfuscating BS from Apple; this was one of the major reasons I abandoned this company in the late '90s.

Hi all. I'm from Mexico and I recently went to my apple retail store and they nicely replaced my display. I thought that they'll just reject my petition because here in Mexico things are worse in terms of support. Anyway, they made a great work! the replaced it with this display:

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM235502Q1F49HBG

This post is to encourage people that want to give up with your faulty display. If I'm in Mexico and things worked, I believe that all of you have a chance.

    Best of luck.

BTW, my screen looks great, no problems with the samsung display.

Congratulations! How long did that take? Did they replace display only or the whole mac?

Did you ask for Samsung display or it is not possible to choose the supplier?

It took about 1 1/2 weeks, considering the diagnosis time, wait for the replacement and the installation of the new display. I asked for the samsung display. Initially, he told me that he could not choose between lg os samsung, but at the end he told me that he asked for a samsung so im not sure if they considered that.

Anyway, give it a try, you wont lose anything if you ask for a samsung display .

By the way, my display was replaced just one time.

Is very telling of what?   Its funny that some seem to  have to demonize people who offer up an idea or a viewpoint that differs.  I think that is a bit more "telling".  Just to be clear, because it seems to be escaping your grasp, <warning - read carefully so you don't misunderstand>  I didn't conclude anything other than people here don't really know how widespread the problem really is and that the numbers offered by disgruntled consumers are only speculation. Not sure why that idea is so hard to grasp.

Again, and note:  I beleive you may very well be right about the numbers, its just I'm not seeing any statistics other than what people speculate about here.  Yes, there seem to   be several people a week who are adding to this thread, but that still is not thousands and thousands as some have said.  It doesn't really matter in the final analysis, enough people are having problems and I agree that IR is NOT normal behavior, and the official tech note is B.S. as people have rightly said, and that Apple should fix it.  It also seems that the great majority of people here who taken there units back have had their screens or computers replaced despite the "official position", several have had them replaced several times.  That's why i want to wait until the fix is fait accompli before I decide to turn mine back in, if I even need to.  Its actually looking pretty good.
