Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

ditto, unless I hear/see that there has been a fix for the problem, there's really not any opinion that hasn't been expressed except to blow off steam, and get some idea of how widespread it is.

Maybe there is software fix of this problem? What if update video driver or system library responsible for graphic output that way it resets the image every 60th or 120th frame (how much is the framerate for static images? 120Hz?). Users won't see it probably, but that could descrease ghosting.

Probably here is engineers who can say if it is possible.

Just a quick update of my situation. After receiving 4 replacements of my original rMBP i returned it for a refund. Then bought another two - but both LG, both showed IR from the first day. Finally decided to accept one of them (the other had a dead pixel anyway) and just live with it. However it also exhibited a nasty yellow tint on one side and red on the other side of the screen (see the attached image). Is that bleeding?

So on Satuday took it to Genius and now having the screen replaced, hopefuly with a good Samsung. The part number is 661-7171, so i guess it should be Samsung?

I just cancelled my order for a 15" rMBP after having read that they're still being shipped with LG Displays, some of which exhibit IR from day one.  Since the 13" rMBP is also suffering from this issue I will either wait for Haswell or get a 13* MacBook Air.  I prefer the default resolution on the Air and after four revisions it's certainly a solid machine.  But we should be able to anticipate a Haswell-powered 13" rMBP by next spring or summer, which will be a significant upgrade.  And by that time we'll have more feedback on IR with these new models.

Alright, I did it. I placed an order on a 15" rMBP after all.

    Please pray for me.

I hope you get a perfect rMBP! I have a Samsung screen on my rMBP purchased in July. It has a very slight yellow tint on the bottom right corner that I probably never would have noticed if I hadn't seen this forum. At first I was concerned that the screen wasn't as bright white as the ones in the Apple store, but learned that the Samsung has a warmer white and I was probably comparing it to LG screens. My brother who is more knowledgable about computers than I am was visitiing last week and said he wasn't even sure he could see the yellow tint in the bottom corner and it certainly wouldn't bother him. The rMBP is a fantastic computer. I love it and I hope you will love yours.

I second the above. The rMBP is phenomenal running on 10.8.2.  You will be spoiled by the clarity of the display and the speed at which you open applications thanks to the SSD.  I have a Samsung screen and I have scrutinized it quite a bit given all the issues brought to light in this thread.  I would consider mine perfect.  I am very happy with the white level which actually looks like some of the LGs I've used, meaning no perceptible yellow tint.  There is almost non-existent backlight bleed and no mura whatsoever.  The display is so nice that I find myself watching HD movies on Netflix on my rMBP at home despite having a 52" Sharp 1080p LED TV.  I wish you the best of luck in receiving a unit that you are 100% satisfied with.  Cheers!

Just a heads up.  I ordered an rMBP from the Apple Store on October 24 and received it today.  Samsung screen LSN154YL01001

So, those of you ordering brand new, there's still hope for you.  Mine is a Week 42 build.

I just wanted to add that I had my (Samsung) LCD replaced in my MacBook Pro Retina due to another issue (not ghosting/retention, but intermittent flickering).

I requested part # 661-7171 LCD DISPLAY CLAMSHELL RETINA and I got a Samsung replacement LCD.

So that part number looks good!

Just to let you guys know, I ordered a 15" Retina 2.6, with 16gb ram on the 22nd October.

It arrived yesterday and the panel is a Samsung:  LSN154YL01001

Not only that, but it's stunning.  Nothing wrong whatsoever.  What a relief!!

AT LAST, I have finally received a flawless Samsung display rMBP after 13 attempts prior to this one. There is no backlight bleeding, yellow/pinkish tints, or dead pixels. I'm absolutely blown away with this machine, however, because I still have possession of my LG rMBP for a few more days before the 14 return period, I compared the two. The Samsung seems to be more washed out in colors, somewhat giving a matte feel to it, whereas the LG has BEAUTIFUL contrast levels and appears more color accurate, especially the blacks. I have also noticed the Samsung display is extremely sharp with texts and textures, almost as if it were illuding forward. In addition, the Samsung is slightly brighter than the LG by 1 bar. Nonetheless though, despite the benefits the LG has, I truly am happy with the Samsung for not possessing IR, which I have been frustrated with when working on my animation projects.

My unit was built on the 44th week and I'm hoping the rest of you guys will be fortunate in receiving one. Let's hope I won't be needing to return to this thread again and finally enjoy my machine that I have been longing for since 3 months ago
