Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

From what I've read in this thread, people have confirmed 13" MacBook Pros with Retina. Wether or not they actually are 13" owners, I'm not sure. Try Googling this problem with the 13"s and see what shows up. By the way, googling "MacBook Pro with Retina Display problems" brings up pages from this ginormous thread on the first half of the first page! :O

I wanted to update about my situation. I finally decided to keep my rMBP, despite it being an LG display. I liked everything else, keyboard, trackpad etc etc. Last week I had the chance to visit genius bar in Germany. They checked my screen and Genius encouraged me to have it replaced for ghosting issue. He claimed it will take a few days max. I waited over a week, finally came to collect my machine and not only it has a yellow tint (Samsung), but also the machine has been damaged internally. Basically all the time i get the 500-600 % cpu usage (Kernel Task) and fans are running like crazy. I could not leave it for any longer, because I drive home tomorrow morning, but I'm really devasted, not knowing what to do with that wreck of a laptop...

What a shame.  Apple makes a really great machine when you get a good one.  I'm sure LG will have fixed the IR issue by the time they refresh this line next year.  Until then, enjoy your rMBP. 

Apple I hate you! I spean 3000 $ and you give me so bad display (LG ) I mean the display is good, but retention make me vey nervous!

I can't change my display, cause I bought laptop in china via internet, so, I keep LG for forever... maybe in the future I can change it fo free, I hope.

First 2 weeks I don't have any problem with retention, after 1 and half month I get it...

P.S. hope this threat will be very very big and Apple test LG display and do replacement for us free.

It has bin two weeks now with my rMBP with LG screen. For what's worth it and for those who still doubting to purchase a retina MacBook I like to shed some light on the product.

I have bin using the MacBook over 10 hours a day with intensive work.

Yes it does has IR (and I am convinced all current retina LG screens have it).

How severe or worse is the IR? That is a subjective decisision. In my case, After working for hours in my CAD design program, I can see pretty solid IR (my CAD program toolbar) when switching for example to this webpage: http://daringfireball.net

However in less then a minute it dissapears. In the two weeks it hasn't bin worse. The pattern is the same each time.

Is this ok? In absolute sense, it isn't ok. Do I accept it? Yes I do.

The other side of the coin is (and I don't say this to justify my purchase, or te be in denial), The LG is really an amazing screen. I can work on it all day without any eyestrain. It shows so much detail and information it makes me more productive in designing electronic schematic etc.

The black's are the best I've ever seen from any screen, the same with the whites. The LG is very even and very vivid on color. Totally awesome as well is the amazing viewing angles. When showing work to others multiple people, the screen is perfect viewable from the side angles without any lose of detail and color.

My co-worker had a Samsung rMBP.

This too is an amazing screen with the biggest benefit that it doesn't have IR. Letters and fonts seem to be sharper then with the LG. However, color unioformity with his, seems drastically worse. The right side of his screen has a different color tint then the left. Black's are less deep, and colors seem less vivid. I didn't notice any yellow tint however. Sadly enough too (just like me first Samsung rMBP) his developed a 2 dead pixels in the past 1.5 month.

The Samsung/LG debate, it is more like pick your poison.

My self subjectively speaking, I am super satisfied with the amazing quality of the LG screen. The IR is clearly a design error, since the big Cinema Display (also LG IPS) doesn't have this IR not even after leaving my toolbar on for a day. However the IR doesn't bother me. And whenever IR shows up, it is gone in less then a minute. I can live with that.

My retina display is actually getting worse by the day. The retention takes longer and longer to disappear. I suspect that it will not be long before the ghosting becomes permanent.

Apple, how can this product be sold by you? It's called a Macbook Pro with Retina Display. The display is the reason most of us bought this product. You have let us down big time.

If that is the case, that it get worse, it will indeed reach a point that it becomes unacceptable. When that day comes, I count on Apple to do the right thing, and some way or another way, fix it for me. Only time can tell.

And if that is the case, that means big masses will complain and will be a huge loos on Apple's side. That is the price to pay to be ignorant to those who complain about the IR issue.

I bought rMBP two months ago. I have LG screen and IR, after leaving Mail.app window for 10 minutes I can see huge IR (I can read the text on my mails) on http://daringfireball.net webpage. And it's 7 minutes passed, I can still see quite sharp IR.

On the other hand I don't want yellow display, or less color accurate, or which is worse — dead pixels. Not sure what to do.

In compare to iPad 3 gen screen (that has Samsung display) I can see how colors are different — LG is much better.

Has anybody compare Samsung rMBP screen with iPad 3gen? Is it the same with blacks, gray and colors in general?

That is bad..... It never takes me longer then a minute for IR completely to dissapear. Sometimes (most of the time) the toolbar of my design program is static for litterally hours, but so far IR always dissapears in less then 60 second. Knock on the wood. The moment it get as worse as yours, I will defenitely complain at Apple.

Wait 5 minutes (don't look at the screen during the checkboard on it). After 5 mins the screen becomes dark gray. Check the time it takes until you can't see checkboard at all (event small signs of it).

Make the test in dark room.

For me the result is 6 minutes to disappear. I also work a lot, usually in Photoshop, Xcode and Coda.

Often see IF on Photoshop background.

Yes I am agree with you, without the IR it is such an amazing screen.

Let's see what Apple will do next year with the re-fresh. Sharp IGZO screens?

Well... I had mine replaced about 2 months ago, and my replacement was an LG, which at the time was fine.

Within a month the IR developed. And in the past month its got rapidly worse.  It's now really irritating me. 2 minutes typing a message on facebook and I can read it on my desktop.

I've come back to this forum as I had hoped that since my last post 2 months ago,  there had been a permanent solution from Apple ....but sadly not.

I'll call the store tomorrow and ask if there can to a sameday repair.  I'll end up losing my BestSkinEver too

I have a rMBP with a Samsung screen and an iPad 3. The iPad has a cooler white and a more reflective display. The screen on my rMBP has a very slight yellow tint on the right side mostly at the bottom and really only noticable on a white background. There is a slight variation in color I think due to the white point but both have rich colors and I can't see any difference in the blacks.

I did the test in dark room (iPad 3 vs rMBP LG). The thing I noticed is that iPad has slightly yellower display (I have Samsung screen on it I guess, as far as I bought it in the first week). Photo lies, but rMBP (LG) shows really neutral white and gray, neither yellow at all, nor cool.

What I did was made a screenshot of safari screen on iPad and opened this screen shot on rMBP.

On the photo it's not that visible (rMBP is on top). There're two photos side by side: focused on iPad first and on rMBP later.

PS If this is what I could face repairing rMBP IR problem on LG by changing it to Samsung, well, I would be able to live with it

I don't know which screen I have on my iPad 3, but it is bright white, almost bluish and even in color - a great screen! I was concerned about the screen on my rMBP initially as it seemed more yellow and not as bright as the iPad. I took it into Apple to compare it to the rMBPs in the store and it was definitely not as white in my mind. The genius people did some sort of test with black and white on photoshop I think and I was told that I had a truer white point and the ones in the store were bluish. I used the calibration program on the rMBP and have the white point set at 6800 and I'm happy with it. At this point I wouldn't consider replacing it given all the problems I've read about here with both Samsung and LG screens. In a perfect world however, I would prefer the bluish white screen minus the IR. My Sansung screen doesn't look anything like the yellow in your photos, but the Samsung screen from what I've read definitely has a warmer white than the LG and you may not be happy with it.
