Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thank you for the response. I am passionate about the computer, so I think I will just order it.

I just got a call from my nearby Apple Store to let me know that they just received my replacement screen and I should schedule my follow-up visit to get the screen replaced. I asked if they could confirm it was a Samsung display and the guy had no clue (just said something like "it's the screen for what you have"...uh, yeah dude, thanks).

If I were you, I would hold my money for current generation of rMBP. I think it would be wise to wait for Apple's investigation.

They are notorious for this kind of thing. No matter what reason it is, the fact is that we have IR issue for rMBP right now. I have returned my rMBP few days ago due to the IR issue happened again, especially, after one month.

No reason to keep faith that Apple would fix it soon. Just move on. Wait for the next generation rMBP. The current generation of rMBP is for developers or photographors who are developing applications for Retina display. Simply like the case of 2010 Macbook Air with NVIDIA 320m, the target customers are those power users.

For the rest of customers, the best rMBP will come at least one year later, the generation before next re-design.

Day 5 of my lg screen (2.3/16/256) week 31 build

No issues to report. Hope everyone else resolves thier issues.

I had very minor ghosting but it disappeared after some use, I've had things downloading for an hour on screen and no issues appeared on the gray wallpaper. I think some people are over reacting and forcing this issue. Due to this dispute b/w apple and Samsung I think production of screens has been stopped. Feeling its LG from here on out. if people are so worried just buy apple care to cover your mac

Haha yeah the time to complain is 2 1/2 years down the track when the 3rd generation rMBP has been released and they no longer even make first generation spare parts, and then you make big noise about the ghosting issues on your screen. A couple of replacements later with all the same issues and hey presto you might land yourself a new 3rd geneartion rMBP

Apple care = pays for itself in this case

Well after say the 6th replacement, you might have a case to be able to go

"ahh look... it doesnt appear its going to be fixed with any of these replacement ones you keep sending me.... maybe we should see if the issue exists on these new 3rd generation ones over here..... Hey what do you know they dont seem to have the problem! Why dont I just get one of these instead of a replacement 1st gen hey? "

To me running the IR test with max brightness for 1 hour is not an unreasonable test since i work with photoshop and illustrator a lot and up to 3-4 hours per session. The retentivity on my screen might be subtle but imagine with constant use of the same application for hours everytime and for a year or two i'm afraid the condition might progress over time. It might not be an issue for some of you if you're not using it for professional editing work but for me it will be the screen where i will judge things for the next few years to come and i cannot afford having retentivity in any way. Having using the same application for hours a day i wouldn't want things like the toolbar or menubar to show up after i close the application and it really helps to have a good screen. Most people bought the rMBP for photo or video editing work and the screen is supposed to be the main factor in making this decision therefore i don't see why we should ignore this issue as we paid a premium in order to get a decent product and there's no point if this issue is left without an explanation or resolution. Hope you understand.

So what's the best way to call Apple and get information about my screen?  I didn't end up going with an rMBP.  I got a BTO MBA.  But of course they use both Samsung and LG for screens.  And of course the Samsung screens are nicer.  There's no issues like IR or anything like that.  The LG screens are less bright, have poorer contrast, and everything just looks less good.  I've gone through four with LG screens.  One had a dead pixel, two had bad trackpads, and only one was returned for screen quality.  I do have a comparison model though, because my wife's MBA is a Samsung, and it's a very nice screen.

Anyway, I want to call and find out who made the screen.  The laptop's not due here until Monday.

Confirmation of IR? Or just skeptical? I'm not judging, I'm just genuinely curious. My replacement arrives on Friday.

    Confirmation.

I tested it with a checkered box picture and i could still see it with a dark gray background.

It wasn't even for an hour, it was for merely 5 minutes too.

That really stinks. Sorry for your luck. Have you already been in contact with Apple about it? Are they giving you a hard time about another exchange?

My excitement over a replacement machine is outweighed by my "fear" of getting another display with issues. I don't have another Mac to fall back to, I don't really want to return it for a non-retina version, but nor do I want to just live with the issue.
