Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I just tried 13" Retina in the store, here in Europe - there was slight image retention. My guess is it will develop and be worse.

I returned my 15" back in September because of this, and I'm really disappointed there's no sign of fix being worked onx...

    Well I've had enough.

After thinking that my last replacement that came with a Samsung screen was the one I was going to keep, I've decided that I can't live with the uneven colouring.

This is my 4th replacement and to be honest I've just had enough of this whole debacle. I'm sending this last replacement back for a full refund and I'll wait until the Haswell update next year to see if Apple can pull their socks up.

At the very least, I can go back to my old trusty workhorse for now, a 2010 13" MBP which I've not once had a problem with in over 2 years that I've had it.

Best of luck to everyone who's persevering with this, including the 13" rMBP crowd who may well find they run into the exact same issues the 15" rMBP crowd like myself have had to endure.

My only advice is don't put up with this IR issue, just because it may be the lesser of two evils between LG and Samsung. Just remember that, certainly in the UK, this is a computer that costs well in excess of £2000 and in my case nearly £3000. No computer costing that much money should have problems such as this and the only way to make Apple listen is vote with your wallet.

There are "perfect" Samsung screens out there with vivid, even colors and no IR. I believe mine is one of them. However it took 4 exchanges to get there. If you are very particular (and you have a right to be since it is your money paying for a top notch product) you have to be willing to play the lottery. My advice is to try your luck soon as Samsung supplies will only decrease according to Macrumors. If you don't want to deal with potential multiple exchanges, you may want to wait or buy the cMBP and opt for the high-res screen and SSD.

It is a brilliant notebook if you get one you're happy with. The best available IMHO. I love reading news, watching Netflix HD content and playing Portal 2 occasionally on that brilliant display. Best of luck!

Finally got my 15" rMBP today. I'm at work so I haven't been able to check if it's a LG or Samsung, but the screen looks great so far.

Just picked up my new 15" retina MBP last night on my way home from work last night. I have been paying close attention to this thread and any other possible problems with these computers. I checked using the terminal commands and I am one of the lucky few to get a Samsung with my first retina. I've read some Samsungs have had other issues besides image retention, so I am checking for any of those problems. Last night I was able to check for backlight bleed and dead pixels and didn't see any problems with either. I didn't notice any uneven colors, but I will check that better tonight. I will also run an image retention test tonight as well. I hope this display stays as beautiful as it is currently. Has anyone heard of problems occuring over time with Samsung displays? I have heard of dead pixels occurring, but is it possible for backlight bleeding to happen after a couple weeks or months? Also, have there been any reports on color getting uneven over time? Thanks and good luck to others with problems.

Ok, You guys where all right...... IR does indeed get worse over time. The first 2 weeks my rMBA was consistent in IR, Now it start to reach a point that just a few minutes on Facebook, leaves a long IR on other pages. This is no good....

I am convinced though, that it is just a matter of time, and more people will notice it. Even the people who don't read forums and stuff. As soon as I am back in my hometown, I will opt for a repair in the form of a screen replacement.

Now when I put the string

    ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

on terminal fo my rMBP 13" (with IR) the result is:

    @.`0 6

    Color LCD

    What it means ?
