Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

That really stinks. Sorry for your luck. Have you already been in contact with Apple about it? Are they giving you a hard time about another exchange?

My excitement over a replacement machine is outweighed by my "fear" of getting another display with issues. I don't have another Mac to fall back to, I don't really want to return it for a non-retina version, but nor do I want to just live with the issue.

I'm on the phone right now with an apple care customer service agent.

That's fine though. If I do get a replacement that means I'll have 2 new rMBPs in my hand next week and hopefully one of them will be a Samsung.

Set to get my bumped up rMBP (2.6) on Friday. The 2.3/256/16 I recieved a week ago with an LG screen still looks great (I test it regularly).

I just got my 2.6/16/512 today and thank god it has a Samsung panel.  From what I gather on here I am lucky the 1st time through.  I haven't tested it for dead pixels or the like but so far it looks great.  Of note, I also had ML pre-installed though my invoice stated only Lion.  Best of luck to those still having the ghosting issues.  Cheers

I wonder how much is luck, and how much is supply chain.  Though not rMBPs, I have been through five MBAs.

    1. Wife's (i5/4/256) - Samsung.  We kept this one, because the screen is really nice for an MBA.

    2. Dead pixel (i5/4/128) - LG

    3. Bad trackpad (i7/8/256) - LG

    4. Bad trackpad (i7/8/512) - LG

    5. Poor screen quality (i7/8/256) - LG

So at least in my experience at luck of the draw on MBAs, I have only gotten one Samsung screen of the five that I've tried.  It's possible that there are more LG panels in use than Samsung.  I doubt that it has anything to do with Apple not using Samsung panels because of their legal battles.  It's all about money, and Apple is paying Samsung for its panels.  And I'd imagine that there are contracts that they're legally bound to fulfill.

I have another one on my way to me that is going to be delivered on Monday.  I need to figure out how to call and find out what type of screen it has.  If it's an LG, I can order another one today.

Hey guys I've been following this pretty regularly since this is my first Apple computer. FedEx just dropped off my rMBP about an hour ago 2.3/16/256. I ordered it July 29 and received it today August 8. First off if did come loaded with Mountain Lion and I am extremely happy to report that I have the Samsung display. The computer is beautiful and as far as I can tell their is no imperfections in the screen, no retention issues.

Good luck to those receiving theirs and enjoy.

I'm so jealous! I ordered my custom built (2.6GHz/512GB/16GB) MBP with retina display and I got it on August 3. It was week 31 build and had an LG screen, and was indeed showing display burn-in I was so excited and waited so **** long for the thing to be shipped to me... only to have to return it.

When I called in the first time, the person was extremely rude to me and acted like I was lying about the issue, in the end I had to cite the 14 day no questions asked policy just to get this freakshow to let me talk to someone who could get me some shipping labels... then I talked to someone else for online store orders and asked them if I could get a samsung screen... to which (as I expected) they said there is no guarantee. Then I asked if it is indeed true that screens are being manufactured by LG and Samsung and its just a toss up as to which one you get... this person would not even confirm that LG or samsung were their suppliers... and acted suspicious that apple would use two manufacturers for the same display on the same notebook. I said I typed that code into a terminal and the serial number said it was an LG... to which he just said "All our notebooks come from the 'apple' factory".

Apparently all apple employees come from the "dumb" factory. Genius my ***.

I understand there are legality issues with placing blame, but I can't see this happening if I bought a vaio or another PC brand. I think the customer is entitled to an apology at the very least.. and I did not get one. If they can't confirm that I have an LG screen, at least have the decency to admit that it is possible to find out the screen manufacturer via command line.

Something makes me think that if steve jobs were still around he would have already made sure this didn't happen in the first place, or at least recall all LG models. Or is that wishful thinking?

they didn't even send my shipping labels. I had to call back days later. This time the employee was actually very nice and apologized, and the labels appeared in my inbox right after she resent them.

One additional weirdness I noticed when calling into Apple. Remember the automated voice says he can respond to a lot of different questions? I don't think that's a computer algorithm behind that intelligence. I feel like it's some person typing in responses who may have an accent when they speak english.. as I could hear clearly in the background someone typing on a keyboard every time I said something.. it was really awkward to say the least. And every apple employee I talked to sounded pleasantly american with a very american name..

i think my favourite part of the whole experience was when they put me on hold and the hold music was track 3 from LCD Soundsystem's album: 45:33. Amazing song that made it possible for me to not completely freak out... but now I am doubting my love for LCD Soundsystem.. is it another sign that apple pre-packages pablum and bullcrap to quell the masses? Sort of regretting my decision to switch from a Linux OS-PC to Mac.

Ok guys I'm back Day 5 with my 2.6/16/512 rmbp LG screen... everything has been looking gorgeous. I have kept a neutral grey backround and been checking for burn in... up till now not one single trace of it... TILL TODAY

after about 35-40 minutes of browsing I moved the windows around and lo an behold... the window color was still ghosted into the previousl position.    now to recap from earlier. yes when I first opened it I was underwhelmed by the whites. took it to apple store asked employee "do you know if any of these have a samsung display?" to which he replied "NO and there is no way to tell" I proceeded to use the terminal command to find that one of the units was indeed a samsung (to his annoyance) placed my LG next to it both on full screen terminal at full brightness on battery power and the samsung was easily brighter and whiter. (to which he denied being able to to see in a rude tone)

moving forward I thought meh graphics aren't my main thing sound is... so I kept it and moved on. well today I saw the ghosting and what troubled me more is that it's a sign that it progressively gets worse.

so I called apple care. first rep on the phone acted as though he knew nothing of the issue. told me I would need to go to the apple store. I told him no way in **** I'm going back to that rude *** store thats why I ordered online.

then he says after about 40 minutes well we need to see it to confirm the repair. to which I said helllls no... your not repairing anything I want a new machine.

after a few transfers and stern tone (not rude but not backing down from my stated warranty and 14 day no questions asked policy) I was finally transfered to the apple online store and was told they would need me to return my laptop THEN they would refund my money and I could place a new order.... Oh helllll naw....

I am going out on business in 3 weeks I can't have that.   explainedthat that wouldn't work. he got his manager. advance replacement was authorized. I will have a new rmbp here on the 15th or so and will then send back my current one.

it was a bit of tooth pulling and about an hour to an hour 20 min on the phone but it's being handled. and I don't have to deal with those rude employees at the store.

    here's hoping I get a samsung screen.

Ahh it's sounding promising for me now. That's 2 people who have ordered later in July and have received samsung panels. Maybe their finally shipping samsungs on. We orders and just recirculating returned LG's on advance returns. I ordered August 3rd here in Australia and my order is still processing. So at least another week I'd say.

Query though for anyone who might know. If I get an LG one and decide I want a samsung one instead. Can I get an advance return on it. And then to just increase the speed of getting a samsung by luck of the draw, order another 4 rmbps online and just return any and all of them except 1 Samsung one. Is there seriously no questions asked in just getting your money back in the first 14 days or would they be like *** no you can't return 4 brand new rmbp's!

i'm wondering the same myself. I was not able to get an advanced return... however; I suspect that if I have to return mine once again then they might give it to me.

additionally, my laptop only has to travel from oshawa to vaughan (less than a day's trip)... so I'm not thinking an advanced return will beneft me in any tangible way.. unless the package ships from vaughan to somewhere else?

    Hi,

Just a quick question - where do you live that it took so little to have it delivered? I ordered mine on 23rd of July and it just shipped on 7th of August, expected to be delivered on 14th...Is it really with Mountain Lion preinstalled?

Yes, it -should- come with ML pre installed. I would be quite suprised if it isn't, as ML install is determined by build date rather than order date.

I don't believe my mbpr IR will get any worse over time but I might as well replace mine anyway. Got an advanced replacement request in a few hours ago over the phone. Didn't know I had to call Apple Care rather than 1-800-MY-APPLE, but tech support forwarded me to Sales, which realized I didn't have a number yet. So they contacted their apple care division on their own (putting me on hold), and handled everything for me. After that they told me my advanced replacement should be in around august 20th, expedited. Without me asking, they also claimed that "my new one will not have this problem" so I'm crossing my fingers it's Samsung and not some modified LG, lol. Oh, and the entire call duration, from when I dialed 1-800-MY-APPLE, was only 25 mins including wait time.

I live in Cedar City, Utah 84720. Yes Mountain Lion was pre-installed. From China it went to Alaska, oakland CA, Las Vegas, then to me. Standard shipping.
