Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have a week 25 (June) rMBP with the LG LP154WT1-SJA1 screen. I have not seen any screen-burn issues on mine and I tested it out. Could I have gotten a good model or does anyone else share my inquiery?

I just got my week 32, 2.6/16/512, with an LG screen. The logo on back has a purple hue in comparisson to my 2007 and 2011 MacBook Pros, the whites are significantly warmer than those on my iPhone 4S, iPad 1G, and 2011 MacBook Pro, and I'm having image persistance after 5 minutes on the dark grey background. Looks like Apple is getting a regifted rMBP.

Update: Apple senior advisor didn't call or e-mail as mentioned to set up a time to call after he spoke with the Apple engineers, so I took matters into my own hands. Maybe he will still call tomorrow, but since I'm headed out on vacation mid next week anyways I didn't want to deal with the online ordering and advance replacement crap.

Cost me a bit more in the long run though... but I'm happy to say, I walked into a retail store and they had a couple of the maxed out 2.7/16/768 models in stock and I figured with a bit of luck I'd snag a Samsung screen in it. I figured if there was any 'pattern' to the panel lottery, and if the Samsungs seemingly a bit higher quality were to be true I'd be able to find one in the maxed out config faster than the build-to-order machines online.

Turns out, either with pure dumb-luck or a bit of an accurrate hypothesis matched with luck I managed to find one on my first try with a Samsung panel. Manufactured a a few weeks back surely as it came with Lion but it is perfect so far and I'm hanging onto this one short of it blowing up or something lol

I must say though for everyone else: there is no difference in picture quality at all between the MBPr I had with the LG screen, and this one with the Samsung. On both machines my whites were perfectly crisp and acceptable, no dead pixels and no weird backlight issues. Both LG and Samsung panels produce exceptional quality pictures - and I'm pretty picky. If you sat even 4 LG, or 4 Samsung panels side-by-side you might notice little differences which would be normal for all screens due to the complexity, but to those who think LG '***** the bag' I wouldn't agree with outside of what seems to be an IR issue mainly hitting them. If Apple & LG can sort out any little IR glitches, then both panels will be indistinguishable.

Just my 2 cents after having both.

How is it possible to determine what week my computer was manufactured?  I just received (and sent back) my first replacement today for the computer that I originally ordered (shipped with a scratch on bottom, warped case that creeked).  I sent the computer back because I wanted to make a pre-emtpive strike against any screen problems I may encounter down the road.  I'm beginning to second guess my decision, as everything aside from the computer being manufactured with an LG screen was fine.  How is everyone's LG screen working on recently manufactured computers?  I think that unless I receive a computer with another poorly constructed case or glaring image retention issues with an LG screen, I will certainly be keeping my next computer.  Any comments or opinions?

There were no main differences in actual display quality with LG versus Samsung as I had good look at both, and both didn't have any yellow tinting etc. to speak of. The display 'warmth' can also be adjusted if you really don't like it with calibration unless it is REALLY off in one direction. The image retention is definitely reason for a return, as is really uneven backlighting or really 'off' colour calibration for sure but I myself would "warn against" returning a stockpile of laptops just based on very minor things. If I was REALLY picky, I could find something I didn't like about every machine I could come across - you know?

As far as a slight 'tinge' to the Apple logo on the back, I really would not care whatsoever if it was 'slightly purple' personally - that's just pushing it as a return reason in my eyes if everything else is perfect with the machine.

Rlayne2, open terminal window and paste in:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

    Followed by return.

I was on the phone for 2 hours, sifting through the various advisor levels and departments of AppleCare. Of course, right as I was about to finish exchanging this comp, I got disconnected. Called back, and was disconnected after 15min. Third time is the charm, I guess--though they didn't keep any of my case info.

I copied the string for determining the screen manufacturer and put it here:

    http://kl1p.com/rmbpscreen

It's easier to browse there from the store and copy and paste the string into terminal than it is to manually type it out.

I know how to determine the screen manufacturer; I'm curious as to how to determine the week my computer was manufactured.

My 3rd rMBP (2.3/16GB/256) is on its way and scheduled to deliver on friday, Thos of who wondering why the 3rd heres the story

1st one had a log off issue, never checked for IR so return it to the apple store

2nd One - Currently using and has IR issue with LG display Apple ordered a advance replacement for me.

3rd one- I ll update it once I get it.

And just in case I ordered another one with 2.6/16GB/256 on 6th Aug and it went to preparing for shipment when I checked around 9.00 pm EST. So looks like I ll get that on monday. So after that I ll decide which one to keep. I m more inclining towards 2.6/16GB/256 one rather than the 2.3 one. I hope one of them have a samsung display specially the 2.6 one. So I can get away with this opening up rMBP in every 2 weeks.

Is there any way to see if a rMBP has got an LG or Samsung screen other than this Terminal command ?

I haven't found any other way to check screen manufacturer. I also just noticed that my delete key squeaks a bit. It probably wouldn't be noticeable, but for my young ears--it's like the mosquito noise. Anyways, after the fourth dropped call, I finally got transferred to a very lovely Angela, who took my name and number down to prevent a similar situation (though I wouldn't mind if she simply called to talk--she was so friendly!). She ordered me an advanced replacement with complimentary overnight shipping, and said that she'd investigate whether there was some mystical way in which she could ensure that I got a Samsung screen (but couldn't make any promises). Being an advanced replacement, I can keep my current rMBP until the new one arrives. She said to not hesitate in returning the next one if a similar problem develops.

    Here's to the Angelic Angela!
