Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Week 30, Samsung screen, no ghosting or other identifiable issues (yet!).

Ironic that we all want Samsung screens really...

Indeed we all want Samsung, but just the idea to receive an LG and start a ping-pong return-receive with Apple is frightening me.

Last year there was Macbook Pro with the freezing issue https://discussions.apple.com/message/18443805#18443805

now the display issue. Either there's something weird happening at pre-selling tests or the technology isn't yet ready.

I will wait, and if the things won't fix I won't give 1 (one) euro to them.

I just received my retina MBP yesterday and I have an LG panel.  I have been trying really hard to produce any ghosting issues and have not been successful.  I will continue to look over time but so far this rMBP is perfect with it's LG panel.

I had sent mine in Monday to get repaired and within 10 minutes of receiving it today, I was able to reproduce the problem. Apparently they only replaced the logic board and not the display itself. I guess that they are going to do a white glove repair and hopefully they'll replace the display this time.

Still rocking a perfect LG display - the display color is warmer than my iPhone 4s but it has no IR issues or any other display issues - looks great.

I am however replacing this 2.3/16/256 unit with a new unit that has a 2.6GHz processor - that is supposed to arrive tomorrow.  I'll let you guys know what display that computer is using and how it compares with the one I have now. If there's much difference I'll post pics (taken with Canon 40D) once I have it.

    Hi,

You determine the week of manufacture by typing your serial number into this site :

    Hello,

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I've looked through this thread and I can't seem to find out how to determine the LCD manufacturer (Samsung or LG) via the command line (or any other method).

Would someone care to enlighten me?

    :-)

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Type this into Terminal:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

    Cool!

I'll try that when I get home today.

    Thanks!

    Greetings from Greece.

Mine was manufactured at week 30, LG Display, MBP Retina 2.6GHZ, 8GB, 512 GB SSD.

No problem, hopefully, after a week's usage.

That's a good news. The worrying thing is that some people report that problems occured after 3-4 weeks of usage. The other thing is that when almost each and every person who compared Samsung and LG displays side by side, claims that Samsung is just better in terms of sharpness, contrast, brightness, whites...And it is extremely annoying to settle for an LG display that is only almost as good as Samsung (we all pay the same price!)

When I was on the phone with customer support, one of the reps made it pretty clear that "Apple engineers are aware of the problem, and are still working towards a fix." I was given the option of totally returning my computer, or replacing it for a (hopefully) satisfactory one. The first option certainly sounded appealing, but I sold my primary 17" laptop for this one, and am starting school in a few weeks.

Normally I wouldn't be so picky over screen warmness and display burn-in, but the screen is the major selling point of this particular model. Nothing else, minus its thinness, is really groundbreaking. If there's only one thing it should be doing right, it's display things. I justified the price of replacing my old laptop, because I wanted to downsize to a 15" to carry between classes, and because it will display at 1920x1200 equivalent (as the 17" would). That said, I feel like the LG's contrast and sharpness had nothing on my early 2011 MBP's screen (I don't know the manufacturer, but at this point, I assume it was Samsung). Once I get a screen with a good unaltered white point, and without burn in, this thing will be the best laptop I could ask for. It's so much less cumbersome than my 17" was.

Another question: Anybody notice strange coloring on their rMBP's rear glowing Apple logo? All my previous laptops had a pure white light. This rMBP has an ever-so-slight pinkish/purple hue. It doesn't really bother me, but I'm curious if they used different lights to power it. It's not nearly as purple as a hydrogen lamp, but it certainly gives off a unique color. If anything, I actually think that it makes the Apple look a little more futuristic--kinda like those slightly off-white halogen lamps and LED running lights in new luxury cars.

I"ve noticed the slight Pinkish/Purple hue, I also like it. This being my first apple computer I have nothing to compare it to so I'm fine with it.

I have a week 32 MBPr 2.6/16/512 with an LG screen that I received yesterday.  It is absolutely gorgeous and I cannot even slightly produce any kind of ghosting effect or yellow tint.  I am thinking they must have identified the issue and fixed it.  I'll keep trying no matter what I do my screen is crystal clear.

I wonder if anyone else with an LG screen with no problems could report the week their macbook pro retina was born.

Either you're doing the test wrong or it will come up later.

Mine's a week 32 and within 5 minutes of testing it showed up.

I have 2 brand new rMBPs coming in next week 2.7/16/768.

hoping one of them is samsung
