Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Unfortunately, there is no confirmed known way to tell what your panel manufacturer is without opening the box.

Some people have said before that there's a system called "Ripley" on Apple Store computers, but I don't know how true those rumors are.

Anyway, that's irrelevant as you're in Brazil and I don't know whether they have Apple Stores there. You can just download this app that determines your screen maker (only with 15" Mid 2012 Retina models).

There's been a number of conjectures about how many rMBPs the IR problem is happening to. It seems to me that if it was only a few, Apple would know this, and it would be no big deal for Apple to just replace the screens of the affected units under Applecare. The fact that they went to all the trouble to create a "test" to prove whether your machine "really has a problem", and then to say that in other cases some IR is normal, means that there has to be a TON of systems with this problem. It's so disappointing for me. I hate windows machines, it doesn't matter what sort of hardware configurations they have, I hate the OS. That's why I went to Apple in the first place. I know we can buy other MBPs and MBAs, it's the attitude of Apple that's the problem.

I just got my new rMBP 15" and I tested for an LG screen... I didn't do extensive research, but I'm hoping that they've got this all cleared out already since I bought this macbook late in the game?

They haven't.  If you recieved an LG screen your best course of action is probably... to return it within 14 days =\

At this moment there's no physical AppleStore here in Brazil, the models were imported from USA.

I'll try to open the box at the store, before buy the product. That's the only way.

Thanks for the reply and wish me luck! Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk.

    Regards.

Nice, hopefully this gets the attention of Apple.

Hey I have a follow up question for you guys since you all seem to have a lot of experience with LG vs. Samsung.

As I've posted before, I have an LG right now that does not show any ghosting.  But I have noticed another issue with it.

I calibrated the screen and it has a noticeable red color cast to it, EVEN AFTER CALIBRATION.  That means there is something about the screen even calibration can't fix.  At first I thought my Cinema Display had a green cast and that the retina display looked better.  But I quickly realized that it was only because I was staring at the retina display for so long that my eyes adjusted to the red cast, causing everything else to look green.

I have calibrated it with an Eye One Pro spectrophotometer using X-Rites i1 Profiler software and ColorEyes Display Pro software with the same issue.  Double checking the profile with both softwares show large Delta E on the red channel.  I'm very disapointed with how this is calibrating.  My Cinema display has less than 1 Delta E and seems very good.

I have heard others complain about color casts before and discounted it thinking it could be solved by calibrating the monitor.  Now I'm not as certain.

So if I exchange this computer for one with a Samsung screen, I know that helps with IR, but what about color cast.  Do any photographers here have a Samsung that calibrates accurately?  Do they have an LG that calibrates accurately?

I think now it's time to post some comments to show that he was not the only person who had this problem and the problem is widespread!!! we need to support this and reach our voices to others and attract some attention!

Just for your information, I ordered a 2.6/16/512 on the 23.11.2012 and today it arrived with a (as far as I can tell) perfect samsung panel.

    Build week is 48.

Careful! I was banned from the ASC forums for a month for a very similar post. This forum is for helping other users solve issues with their Apple products, so beware of encouraging acts that disparage the company itself.

**** RoozbehB.....I ordered my 2.6/16/512 at the exact same time and picked it up last night (also a week 48 build!).  I got and LG screen and have already confirmed IR.  In fact, it's worse than the first one I bought (week 40 build).

I wonder if they ship to my geographic location from a central stocking inventory that came from the same lot.  Not sure how we both ordered the exact same config, but you got the Sammy......bummer for me

Honestly, I really really love this display, but it's costly for any IR issues.  My latest one has to go back.

I only have my laptop for a day. Can you tell me how you tested for IR so fast? I'm wondering if it takes awhile for ghosting to show, or you can already test for you?

    Thanks

Testing IR is pretty easy.  I set my background to the darkest grey, then turned up the brightness.  I put the checkerboard grid on the screen for 20 minutes.  When I switch to the gray background, the checked pattern remains for more than 5 minutes.  I also tested by leaving the Apple website open on my gray background.  After 10 to 20 minutes, I moved the browser window and could still see the header bar and other shadows.  These DO fade after 20 minutes or so, but my guess is that things will get worse over time (I've only had mine for less than 12 hours!).
