I am returning my rMBP under the 14 days refund policy. I called AppleCare twice and got the response !!
Since I received my LG equiped Macbook (No image retention up to now) on december 10th and discovered this thread (and others) I was hesitating on keeping this great laptop. The LG screen doesn't have any good feedback and draw a future with little chance to avoid loosing "performance" over time. For me I just don't know what this screen will look like in 4 years (2 years without extended warranty) !
Today I called AppleCare. First technician was useless. Still tried my luck again and called back to get my grip on another technician. Got the fair guys this time. This one knew about image retention and was much more receptive talking about the future of my LG panel. I told him I might be looking for a refund since I read about multiple complains on LG panel and explained him Im a software develloper where most of my usage consist of static white page with text for long duration. I also told him I did used a lof of monitor since I use computer and never I had to avoid something like image retention. I was fearing this premium product loose its actual perfect state.
My main question was actualy if Apple knew and did something about the LG panel performance lost issue compared to the Samsung one. And if it did, does my Macbook (based on serial number) was in the new fixed manufacturing LG batch. I got no direct answers on both of them (This was predictable). He gently put me on hold and got a chat with superior. Came back and offered me to talk to his superior as he might have other options they could offer me based on the way I was planning to use the LG IPS screen. I gently refused since I was not looking to start numerous exchange process. I just wanted a confirmation if my panel is a fixed revision from LG or not. He could not answer me on that one too.
But he then confirmed me that IPS panel from retina MacBook Pro display (without specifying LG or Samsung) will show sign of image retention if used in the way I planned to. I asked him if I could use a MacBook Air (without IPS technology) for long period without any issue and he acknlowedged that a non IPS panel like the one on Macbook air would be much more appropriated to avoid image retention in my case. But repeated me gently that retina display of MacBook Pro does have the tendency to IR and care must be taken. That was fair from him.
1) Nothing confirm new version of LG panel are fixed by december 13th 2012
2) Technician confirm me IPS on Retina MacBook can make image retention under particular usage
Will return (Again my hearth) this nice computer and wait for a MacBook Retina 15" that don't generate 400+ page of complain on the most interesting feature: The Retina display !!
