Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I have a theory: I suggest that it isn't necessarily bad screens, especially for those that have a color balanced, no IR screen, but an issue with the cooling system. 

My 2010 MBP has about a 1/8" - 1/16" gap between the bottom of the screen and the chassis.  The rMBP has almost no gap.  Less heat is blown on the screen because it flows under and over the hinge, not mostly over the top of the hinge onto the display like the rMBP.

In addition, I am finding my fans blow more and hotter air out of the left side than the right--using iStat, my left fan consistently shows a higher RPM than the right (right now, right: 1998rpm, left: 2159rpm). 

Finally, because the vents under the display are out-only (as opposed to both in and out on the cMBP), there is more airflow than previous MBPs--and most of it, with the new hinge shape, is aimed directly at the bottom of the screen.

Thoughts?

Also, those with a Samsung screen, do the images in my earlier post (previous page) look like yours--should I keep it or return it?

Interesting, but then why would it only be happening to the LG's and not Samsungs?

I'd like to know how bad this really gets after 3+ months of use. Is there visible ghosting when moving windows around or the mouse?

I have looked at alternatives such as the ASUS and the Vaio and unfortunately I cannot use as they only have a HDMI port. I need a DisplayPort/Mini for my U3011. They only thing close I can find is the XPS 15 which seems to be dogged with heat/CPU throttling and wifi issues.

Just adding a little info from my experience today getting my Retina MBP display replacement. I went to the Somerset Mall Apple Store in Troy, MI with a handfull of issues with my Mac:

• MBP turning off at odd times. Battery has 83 cycles and even when nearly fully charged the whole machine sporadcially shuts off. (not easily replicatable)
• Extremely slow grapics card performance even when using the discrete card only.
• very noticable IG/IR in 20-30 seconds on a gray background, readable text in 2 minutes, noticable color in 4 minutes.

I pushed very hard for a replacement laptop due to the number of problems, and dependance on my laptop for work. Immediately after showing the genius my display issue he agreed that it was a problem, but wouldn't issue a replacement laptop, instead told me that they could perform the display replacement between 9pm-12am and have my laptop back to me the next day when the part arrives. He couldn't guarantee me a Samsung display. I'm still concerned about the other issues, and will be very cautious of future Apple retina laptops.

They didn't perform any checkerboard tests, or diagnostics. He examined the body of the laptop for evident damage, viewed the display with a TextEdit window I had open with garbage text and concluded that there was a problem.

I wish everyone else the best of luck with this. This laptop was a huge misstep for Apple, and should not have been released in its current state.

Ok, so it seems that if I want to buy one of the 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, I should wait for the next generation? Those seem a little far out and I would like a new computer as soon as possible. Or is it safe to buy one now?

Depends if you can handle the retention as you will likely get an LG screen. Still like to know just how bad this image retention is and if it truly is noticable with everyday work. Really wish there was something else out there that would meet the specs of this machine

I also need a new laptop but after I got one screen with IR and changing it to another and getting the same problem and after getting the 13" again finding IR I think it's just madness gambling on this. If you take your money to Vegas there'a more chance of winning something than here lol.

I know but I need something to replace my 2009 MacBook Pro. I need something fast, thin, light and has a good looking screen. Because now I am a pro user and my 2009 MacBook Pro is not as fast as a 2012 laptop would be. How much longer would it be before the next generation comes out? Wasent there a new one released in October? And someone mentioned a change in the model number?

Yeah. 13 inches MacBook Pro with retention display was released and I got one found the same problem and returned it within my 14 days. Just like what I did with the 15 inches. I've read in macrumors that the new MacBook Pro along with MacBook Air are being revised and will be out by June. In my opinion buy a crucial SSD and it will make your current Mac fast enough until the new version comes out.

I am not willing to take the bottom pannel out. It is the one that has the non-removeable battery. Why do I have to wait so long! I just want a MacBook Pro with Retina display NOW!

Well. It's your money and it's your choice. I have named this series of product MacBook Pro with "Retention" Display. Feel free to try the hassle.

It's a safe bet the "next generation "will be based on the Haswell chipset from Intel, but there's no way of knowing whether the the next generation will have different parts suppliers, or that LG (and Samsung, based on how some people seem to have screen problems other than image retention) will have fixed their problems with the the screens they produce for Apple. Don't believe anyone who says they know for sure one way or the other.

It seems there's also no way of knowing whether its "safe" right now. I had two machines: one had a Samsung, one had an LG. I kept the LG because it was a BTO with the RAM I wanted. Another machine i know of built the same week as my LG BTO had a Samsung. The image retention problem showed up a week later, and two days after that they replaced my screen, and gave no significant trouble. Everything's working great now.

So it's far from certain you'd get an LG. But you might. And you might have a really easy time getting it replaced, as I and a lot of other people here did. Or you might have a really hard time getting it replaced, as some other people here did. (It's always good to keep in mind that Internet forums are self-selecting for complainers, however...)

As for how bad the IR problem is, I noticed it in everyday use, doing mainly text stuff at the time.
