Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

That's exactly true. I was not among those lucky people who got Samsung from the beginning. I also don't like to have a repaired laptop when I'm paying for a premium product. Even if they repair it with a Samsung screen and that's something related to me (everytime I look at it I feel it was not a perfect thing). Anyways, it highly depend on your usage. If you are using it for CAD softwares which have constant toolbars and fixed images for a long time or if you're a programmer it's really really annoying and it get worse more quickly. If your usage is something else (I have no idea about other people's usage) you might not even notice it. It's your call by the end of the day!

There's nothing to complain about. I just told you my experience and was trying to help you out if you are deciding to buy one. I was in the same place you are now 3 months ago and I said I'll give it a try. To be honest this laptop is very tempting and very sexy. If this problem was not there for me it would be the best laptop for years.

We have no way of knowing "what if."  Maybe LG will have fixed the problem.  Maybe Apple won't source any screens at all from LG.  Nobody knows.

If it were me, I'd buy the machine, and then have it repaired if necessary.  I haven't had nearly the trouble with repairs and returns that some people have had. YMMV.

Will the next generation be a dramatic upgrade? Like something as big as when the next generation MacBook Pro was inroduced at WWDC 2012?

Think Apple have had quite an influx of people at the Genius bar requesting a Samsung screen. The guy I had was almost robotic and scripted in his answers.

With the increasing number and likely a directive from Apple management results in this inflexibility of apple customer care

No, it ill be an incremental update.

Learn a few things here everyone.  This thread is over 400 pages with apple deleting threads.  The product is flawed, apple service is shoddy, they won't acknowledge fault, and these are the most expensive machines on the market.  Save your money, get the next model, or do as many are, leave apple.  They aren't the same company and are ok with less than reliable suppliers so long as they have product to ship.  And because the parts are proprietary, you are stuck with the idiot bar.

I've been the biggest supporter of apple and I can honestly say after this fiasco and a coupe others, I always ward people away from apple now and keep the proof of these screw ups as photos on my phone so I can save others from going through what I have.

The case probably won't change, but Haswell's a bigger increment than Ivy Bridge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Tick-Tock

    Fixed that for ya.

I played with the viewing angles a bit with my rmbp on my lap (which is how I use my laptops over 1/2 the time, since they are my only computer).

Here is the result (pic taken at eye level, ie, the angle I typically use it at): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43171877/rmbp_samsung_100_dark.jpg

    What do you think?

The more I looked at it at different angles, the more I realized that dead on, it has a slight yellow tint in the bottom-left, however, when I look at it from either side or down from the top, it is much more uniform--weird...

Maybe the heat theory is why some of the samsungs have a yellow tint(?)  I said it was a theory, not a good one

Has anyone had any good experiences with this laptop? Like being able to buy the first one without any issues?

Think about it, are people who are happy with their retina macbook reading this thread? A few are, but they are mostly ones who originally got an LG screen and it had IR. Some, through persistance, have succeeded in getting it replaced with a Samsung screen, either a replacement of the entire machine or just the screen.

The machine is great in all other ways. Upshot, there is no way of knowing whether this issue will bother you until you have spent a little time with the computer. I say buy it, use it extensively for the first 2 weeks and return if you start to notice IR, or if the other features of the computer don't impress you enough. If you like the computer, but are experiencing IR or are concerned it will develop (only with LG screens) then return the machine and buy again. Repeat until you get Samsung screen. If the IR is bad or you don't want to play the return/buy lottery you may wish to take it in and have the techs at Apple Store replace the screen. They always replace with Samsung and most people have luck getting it done if they are persistant and polite.

Personally, I am following the thread casually, but have not owned a rMBP. I was considering buying and discovered this thread. I think the refresh will be 5-6 months away, depeding on Haswell schedule. If you can wait a half year, hold off and buy the next model. I seriously doubt the same IR issue will exist in the next model LG screens or not.

I am also following casually. Have not yet owned a rMBP but I am shopping. I almost bought one last night. It was open box and it was $400 off (the box was opened but the MBP was still in the clear plastic wrap, never opened). I checked it and it was an LG panel, so I passed. I checked their two floor models. Both were LG, both had terrible IR after about 5 mins.

my 2.9ghz i7 13" rMBP was ordered on the 31st and will be here today. This thread is the first time I have questioned Apple on anything and now I am scared of whats to come. I cannot afford issues with this computer, but i will be leaving it on for the first 2 weeks. Luckily i will be at CES next week and have time to return it after if things look bad.
