Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Guys, I haven't understood how to reproduce the problem.

Using Safari for, let's say, half an hour? And then, what background should I use to see if the image has burnt?

    To test for image retention:

    1. Launch System Preferences, and click on Desktop & Screen Saver.

    2. With the desktop tab at the top selected, locate the picture group called "Solid Colors"

    3. Select "Solid Dark Grey" (the darkest color available).

    4. Make sure your brightness is turned up to max, and then disable your screensaver, sleep, and screen dimming in Energy Saver

    5. Open either a text-filled forum page, or your iTunes library in a window at the center of your screen (any window with a white background and a combination of large and regular-sized font will suffice).

    6. Set a timer to, at a bare minimum, 10 minutes (5 minutes tends to show a minimal amount of IR, but the longer you test, the more pronounced it will be), and wait.

    7. When the time is up, press either Command and H (to hide), Command and Q (to quit), or Command and M (to minimize).

    8. If you can see artifacts on the screen (should look as though the window outlines and text are still there, but transparent), you have image retention. Specifically, when I try it with these forums, I can easily read the top header that says "MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?"

Once you begin running the timer, refrain from touching your computer for the duration of the test. Changing the image on the screen will reset the pixels, and prevent you from seeing IR. IR most commonly occurs if you're editing a single photo or a page of a word processing document (or otherwise maintaining any single window) for prolonged periods.

Well I did the test on my 2007 imac, and yup plenty of IR when I do the test. And i've used this imac with absolutely no noticeable IR when not doing the test. So as I said, if you dont notice it through normal use. Who cares in the slightest! Its a completely normal trait on a LCD

I got my third replacement on wednesday and got lucky. A Samsung-Panel.

Tested it the first time for about 20min, no IR. Today tested it again for 90min, no IR. Will do some more testing in a couple of days, but dont think that anything will show up.

So it really seems that most of the Samsung are better. Before this model I had two with an LG-Display, first one really heavy IR, second a little bit less.

The new Modell is 2,3GHZ, 16GB Ram, 265 SSD, build in Week 32.

Also the Apple Support called me and offered me a refund of 70€ for the trouble (sitting in Germany), which I kindly accepted

So everythings really nice and I am happy.

    Good look for erverybody else.

tingle3003, so you also live in germany ? Do you think i could also get a replacement from MediaMarkt? (of course only if i buy it there)

    Yeah, I do.

I would say that they (another Shop than an Apple-one) would also run the replacement over Apple. But then you have another factor between Apple and You. Dont know how well they go along.

I would just call your MediaMarket and explain them the situation. "What they would do if you got an IR-Modell?"

Ordering over the internet is their quite a benefit, because you always have the 14-day return. In a real Shop their isnt, they just can be friendly, they dont have to. But I remember that Saturn, or so, also started to offer it, but I am not sure.

But you have the Guarantee one year from Apple, even when the 14-days are over.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

    Thank you for your answer!

Your right, i should ask before i buy it. It would be great for me because the Media Markt is very close to my house, and i don't want to go to the city every time i get an IR rMBP. Furthermore, it "only" coasts 2133 Euros there.

Just called Apple Care for the diplay IR issue, which is less then optimal....

The guy told me that it's the first time he heard of the problem and I should bring it to Apple store for them to check it out.

The thing that really bugged me was that when I told him that I am still in the 14 day return period, he said no...my purchased date was on July 25th...which I kindly explained to him that I remember ordering online on July 6th, and they shipped the machine on the 25th, and I received the machine on the 30th...

According to him, the five days that the machine was in transit (which I didn't have) counted toward my 14 day return period, so I am now out of retun period....

Does that sound right to you guys???

After he insisted Apple go with the Purchased Date instead of actual received date, I figured there was no point arguing with him anymore, and now I really just want to return this machine.

I do love this machine, but I just hate the troubles...

    Any thoughts?

It's 14 days from when you receive it. That's what I was told when I exchanged mine. Sounds like you just got a clueless mope on the phone.

and that info is on the site... it is definetly from when you have it in your hands. call back. don't bend or break when they tell you anything but what you know darn well your entitled to... I told em straight off.... no way I am taking it to the apple store. I bought it online so I wouldn't have to deal with that place. I hate the mall.

I was at my 10th day. It was a day after WWDC 12 and I bought MBP late 2011. I called them and I told them that I want to return this machine because the new ones are better and cheaper! I bought it online so they sent me a DHL a day after I called and I got my full refund 7 days after that.

I'm at Malaysia and I think in Asia it is a little bit harder to do this stuff cause the first thing she said was you can't do this in south Asia!!! Well I talked her through.

    Call them again.

Well i guess you're very persuasive then. I'm in Malaysia too and when i asked for a refund a few days ago they wouldn't let me to (I'm still in my 14 days). They said unless it was a hardware problem only you're entitled to a refund.

My replacement rMBP arrived today. Another LG/Philips screen. Still has image retention issues.

no it clearly states on the store 14 day satisfaction guarenteed.... that can mean any issue ... maybe you just don't like it. your entitled to a refund. stop making yourself a victim.
