Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I converted from Windows to Apple/Mac in around the 2006/2007 time-frame and I've been very happy with this decision. My interactions with the company (tech support and the Apple Store) has also been very positive and I've always been impressed. So, I just want you to know that there has been reason for all the hype. However, my experience this time around has been very different, and I sincerely hope that this is not a sign of things to come. What scares me most is the denial on Apple's part. It would be one thing if it was one Apple Store employee here and there spewing this "IR is normal" garbage, but it's actually Apple policy. So, to sum it all up, if you told me before I bought my rMBP that this may be the last Mac I buy, I'd say you had rocks in your head. Now though? I don't know. We'll see. I'll never go back to Windows for my primary OS though, that's for sure, especially after Windows 8. I'd jump to Ubuntu with Windows in a VM before I'd ever buy a Windows-only machine.

The question is does it really worsen by time? I bought 13 rMBP and its November build, I did the test yesterday and confirmed that it has a slight IR, one or two minutes is enough to show the IR using the testing link while if.I switch to any other gray background it wont show up!!!! Looks like the guy who created the test really chose the best background to show it up!

However, if it doesn't worsen then I am OK as it does not showup on real life usage, if it happens one day I have 3 years applecare and can replace the screen anytime

It does worsen. Mine was barely noticeable at first. Eventually though, I could see it on any background. By the way, I keep hearing a lot of people on this forum claim that no one uses a gray background. That may be true, but you're forgetting that almost all Mac apps (especially Apple apps like the iLife suite) have a lot of gray in them. The image retention shows up quite nicely on that. ANY IMAGE RETENTION IS UNACCEPTABLE...PERIOD. At $2000 to $4000 per machine, we, as customers, have a right to be picky.

Mine is 13, I.ordered it.from B&H Photo for a great price $1670 with applecare, free shipping, No tax

Not sure what to do if I return it they will give me an LG again as most of the 13 are LG!

Maybe better to wait untill it gets  really noticeable then go to apple store and replace the screen for a Samsung.

I'm not even sure if there is the same issues and vendor choices on the 13".  But if you are a photographer you may want to stick with the LG.  I have the LG 15" and it calibrates almost perfectly to sRGB (98% Gamut), 2.2Gamma and 65K white point.  My friend who has the Samsung 15" is getting poor calibration results with an identical i1Pro Xrite setup, white point is biggest issue as well as lower gamut results (~90%).

How do you calibrate your display. I am having trouble doing it with my 15Inch Lg Retina.

Hi guys. I'm not that lucky to live in a country with an Apple store to exchange the retina lg until i get a samsung. I found a good deal on ebay 2800$ from UK so no taxes (i'm from Romania). I reeaaaally want that laptop, but now i can't decide whether to buy it or not. Here in store is like 4000$ (2.6 8GB, 512), waaaaay to expensive. I asked the local authorized service center how they handle the problem and they told me they will replace the screen for such an issue. What should i do? Thanks

All 13inch retinas have LG dispays. Only the 15inch retinas have LG and or SAMSUNG. But SAMSUNG are becoming more and more rare due to the legal issues between Apple and SAMSUNG.

Another thing with this is when people go to sell them.  You know what type retina will become a regular question, as well as affect the value

How many weeks have you been using your rMBP?  Have you tried the harsh checkerboard/grey screen test on marco.com etc?  What evidence do you have that Apple has turned the corner on the rMBP image retention issue with LG screens after week 48?   Thanks.

Have you read this thread? It's been mentioned...like hundreds of times...that IR appears over time. It sometimes takes weeks or even months, but it does eventually appear. The fact that your LG doesn't have IR right now means nothing. Give it some time.

Yep, that's what I did. The one near my work was great and fixed it in 2 hours.

There is noi point in doing the checkerboard test. It is like difference of someone falling off a building at 10 feet vs. 100 feet. It is a very unreal test. I mean, If I do infect end up getting it, then I have have my local Famil owned Apple Reseller replace the display. Thats what Apple Care is for. Buy locally!!!! Much better overall!
