Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I think the checkerboard test is a good indication of wether or not week 50 LG screens have truly been rid of the image retention problem.

The Samsung screen I saw at a retail store passed the harsh checkerboard test while no LG scren I have seen so far has passed the test.

No, it will just prove to you that all LG panels have Image Retention!! keep it for 20 minutes on then click it, don't let your screen go to screen saver or something!

Every LG display I have seen so far (inlcuding an out of the box one) took less than 5 minutes (usually less than 1 minute!) to see at least some faint IR.  It won't damage your screen.  http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html

Please let us know what the results are.

Another more "real world use" test is to set your desktop background to the stock dark grey background and look for a ghost image of the url bar from your browser after you have been browsing for a while.  If this test fails then you can probably also see the UI chrome ghost images on the grey background of the launchpad background.

I actually had a week 48 LG for a few days and could not exhibit the IR out of the box.  I ended up returning it for fear of it popping up outside of my return window and because it had a magenta cast to it that my i1 Pro could not calibrate out - so the white point looked very different when compared to my Cinema display.

But count me in for at least one data point that the harsh test had no ill effect for my week 48 LG out of the box.

Even at the worst if I do infact get IR, My local family owned Apple Reseller will gladly repair or replace the display. There is no way I will go through an Actual Apple Sotre. Have you seen the nighmares people have had trying to get there defective products fixed!?!?!

I was certain that they would replace mine too if I had this problem, but after reading people's experience and them being denied, it made me doubt that. Also, I dont want them to take open my laptop and such and potentially damage other parts, which I've read someone had that happen to them.

My week 48 LG display showed IR after a couple days when I looked for it.  The IR of the chrome in my browser was especially noticeable.

My week 42 rMBP was an LG and I noticed the IR issue after 4 days (it may have been there out of the box, but I didn't notice it until later). The screen was replaced with a Samsung by my local Apple Store - I wasn't happy at all, massive yellow tinge towards the bottom of the screen, so I returned the entire laptop.

My week 49 rMBP is an LG. I've had it for 12 days now. Perfect colours (I do photography work). No sign of IR in normal use. I just did the IR test for 10 mins, still no sign of IR. The slight flickering I noticed on this panel (see earlier posts) seems to be normal, as I have since noticed it on every other LCD screen I looked at since, retina or not - and other people cannot seem to see it when I ask. Maybe I have gained the ability to see 60Hz flicker? haha.

That's good to hear.  Maybe they actually have turned the corner on this after week 48...  Keep us updated in the coming weeks. Does anyone else have a post week 48 LG unit that passes the test?

What exactly is the flickering you are refering too?  Does it affect your enjoyment of the screen?

I use the Xrite i1Display Pro calibration system for all my displays.  ( xritephoto.com ).  It's around $250 from B&H photo.

My first screen was a LG without IR. I was kind of happy but after one month a group of dead pixels appeared at the middle-left of the screen. I changed the screen, got a samsung (even happier). I thought it would be the end of my problems but today (one month after) one dead pixel appeared at the same spot. Do you think this is just a coincidence? Could it be something in the computer that burn those pixels?

Also, when I went to the apple store (Paris), the "Genius guy" said to me that they think the goshting problem come from the computer and not the screen, because when one machine has the problem, usualy it still has after changing the screen and when they don't have IR before they don't get it after.

It's simple - there are 5 million pixels on your 15" Retina screen. That makes it that much more likely for one (or a few) to be or become dead pixels.

2 different screens and same problem at the exact same spot... what are the probabilities that this happen?
