Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I am glad people are reporting that the newer LG screens don't seem to have any problems. Maybe they did really address it. I had three LGs this summer that all had the IR and I had a madding time dealing with it until I finally got a Samsung. So I only wish if they have really fixed it that at some point they issue a real recall with the old screens. That would restore my faith in Apple.

On the other hand the issue has to deal with heat so I am giong to hold off suggesting people buy this computer still till the spring or summer. Just in case the issue comes back up when ambient tempetures rise again... Its paraniod but what ever.

its simply not correct. a few state that they dont have IR but IR takes time to show up sometimes. also people are complaining about week 58 LGs too so i dont think anything has changed.

LOL, exactly, somebody posts that their computer doesn't have IR yet and people get optimistic to the point of appearing delusional. People, this has been going on for months, NOTHING HAS CHANGED. People are reporting they have IR in week 1 or sometimes week 21, whatever, and Apple are reporting NOTHING. Status Quo. So buy one if you want or wait but don't think for a second anything has changed because somebody posts "I have an LG and don't see IR" LOL, absolutely comical how the human mind works when you're desperate to believe something.

I understand how beautiful the computer is but you're a potentially throwing your money away when you consider all the posts by people reporting that applecare was sending people on their way when they were going in with IR complaints. If it wasn't broken, I agree, it's got the best screen I've ever seen, with IR, it would end up being the biggest lemon I ever purchased. No thanks, I'll wait.

Eh... Think about that for a sec. There are 114 people that bookmarked this thread. If they all had an issue such as this, there would be THOUSANDS of more posts. They can't all be defective.

I did a little unscientific poll at work when I first started following this thread. Long story short, several people had Apple computers or the Iphones, NONE, yes none knew about this support forum. That didn't surprise me. The one guy at Best Buy who did know of the screen issue didn't know anything about the forum either. He knew from complaints and as i said before, he said the biggest complaint about this notebook was the dropped wifi, which I suspect is software fixable but who knows.

So do I think they all have IR? nope, do I think that they all are susceptible to screen issues because of design or something that's flawed with this computer? **** ya, I'd bet every penny I have on that. I also think if it was firmware fixable it would have been done long ago. Will the flaw show itself with all the computers, sooner or later regardless of how the computer is used? "I" think so.

If its such a small amount of LG screens with IR  why are some ppl sending back 3,4,5 macbooks with IR are they simply extremely unlucky ??? I highly doubt it ...

1 single person getting upto and more than three bad sceens is not acceptable and a massive fail for LG.

There would be other ppl in this world in the same boat getting defective screens 3,4,5 times over that dont post in here

I purchased a 15 inch retina display 2.6/16 meg/514 ssd. with a LG screen on December 2, 2012. About the first of the year I began to notice the retention issue. I performed the 7 minute noted on this forum and showed the bars upon a dark gray screen.

I made an appointment with the Genuis folks at the Apple store. They performed the three minute test and according to the "Apple Engineered Test" it passed. They shared wth me that even though it pass the test they were willing to order a new display. They did informed me if I came back and it passed the three minute test again that they would not be able to replace the display. Only if the DIsplay were to fail the test would they replace after the 14 day period. I asked them to go ahead an order the display.

After I thought about it I became very very frustrated, feeling that perhaps the "3-minute test" is flawed.

I then wrote a letter "email" to Mr Tim Cook, outlining several points my perceptions regarding QC, policies, products and customer interaction /support and how Apple was loosing it's brand authenticity if they are not careful.

Anyway not thinking anything would come of it and frustrated, I was a few days out of the 14 day return policy. I received an email from the executive response team member who after listening to my concerns. I shared with him that I did not want to continue being a ginny pig or a QC rep for their product and replace the display over and over. I told him I wanted to return the machine and get my money back. He did and I am happy now that I am not stuck wondering if the Image retention would come back. These Laptops are very close to $3,000.00 and their Flag Ship Laptop.

A recent rumor I have learned there may be a replacement Haswell Processor in a revised 15 inch retina after June 2013. May even have longer battery life, perhaps they will figure out the IR and get the display issues worked out. I will wait and reorder one then.

    Good Luck Everyone!

Hi everyone, I have the 15 inch Retina with the LG display (A00F) that I have had for almost a month. All I can say is what an awesome computer. Apple has really outdone themselves with these laptops. Days after opening my laptop, I performed an image retention test and detected only a slight trace of IR after 10 mins. Anything below 10 minutes and I could not detect any IR. Besides, I have yet to see IR during everyday usage. I personally do not see this as being an issue. Apple even has a support page stating that IR to a slight degree is completely normal. The said article is linked here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455?viewlocale=en_US

I even went to the Apple store and checked out the 15 inch Retina equipped store models that they had. After using the terminal command to determine the screen type, I saw that only one out of the six Pros had a Samsung display. The rest had LGs. Only one of the LGs had noticible IR that definitely was a serious problem. Personally, I spent about 20 minutes comparing the screens (To the point where an Apple Genuis asked me what on Earth I was doing) and came to the conclusion that I actually liked the LG screens more (minus the one with the IR). The sole Samsung seemed to have a cooler tint and overall the colors did not look as rich. I can't speak for others, but I am totally satisfied with my Retina Pro.

So if it's normal then Samsung panel owners should return it?

You say slight, there's part of the problem. Apple has decided what "slight" is and their idea of slight isn't shared with all the people complaining that feel ripped off.

You being happy doesn't change anything. The computer is flawed and susceptible to screen issues.

Thanks for you guys. Now i make the decision i will keep the LG one. I cant belive all the LG dispalay has intrisic faulty too. If hundreds of fault pannal were reported here, there r still millions of LG display were potentially considered as ' perfact'. And personnally, i really do not like the ' yellow' on my display and the unreal colour of sumsung. TNow , i enjoyt it. I have to compomise to  Apple. It was just like bitten apple.

Well, I took back my 3rd LG yesterday.  Last time, the store manager told me RIPLEY existed (gosh I sound like it's some sort of Area51 thing). Last time he tried to find me a Samsung on the system but the details weren't pulling up.   This time, he denied of ever knowing or hearing about RIPLEY.

For some reason, they weren't so happy about helping me this time.  Still I came home with an in-store replacement.

I'm now on day 1 of my 4th LG.

I'm not going to moan about the staff not being helpful. I've come to accept that they have a rulebook which they must abide by. And once you buy an Apple product, you're pretty much under their thumb.

Apart from the screen issue, the rMBP is an ace machine.

I have a week 50 (December) LG display and I tested it for the image retention when takin out of the box on the first day, and I saw noticable image retention after 5 minutes. And that bad IR continues.

And the worst thing, in my country there is NO 14-day no questions asked replace or refund, so there is not so much I can do except replacing only the display with warranty.

you are right, as I terribly wanted this machine because of everything it has to offer to me, I went to some apple retailers and tested the machines over there.

I in total tested 2 machine in one place and 1 in another. they all had LG displays and terrible terrible IR. In the 3rd case even it came up in a matter of seconds let alone 5 minutes!

however, I cannot tell which production week were these machine from but all in all I can say that almost all LG displays have this problem and apparently they get worse with time.

I hope that Apple just fixes this issue!
