Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Everything has turned out perfectly fine for me, but i still don't understand why apple is using 2 different screen technologies... Sourcing their panels from 2 different manufacturers is a logical thing to do, but using 2 differnt screen technologies (Super PLS Screens from Samsung and IPS Screens from LG) is absolutely random.

Super PLS is just Samsungs version of IPS, it's the same basic technology and manufacturing process as IPS from LG.  PLS stands for Plane to Line Switching which is another term (samsungs creation) for IPS or In Plane Switching (LG).  They claim 10% more light transmission (brightness) over LG and lower power requirements.  The difference basically boils down to patented manufacturing processes.

Apple has a very detailed specification for the Retina display that all vendors must meet or exceed in order to get qualified for production use.  Sharp is also qualified on the rMBP (and iPad) for their new Igzio displays but have not yet been able to obtain manufacturing yields that would support high volume production.

Apple ALWAYS has a minimum of 2 seperate vendors for every part used on any product.  They ship 1000's to millions of units per month and can't afford being shutdown by a single qualified vendor having a production problem (or fire, earthquake, tsunami etc), this is normal practice for high volume manufacturing.

quite taken aback. the guy was really nice, but now i am stuck.

he said there is no such thing as an advance replacement btw.

OK, I don't know your financial situation, but if it were me, this is what I would do:

    1. Create a Time Machine backup of your current machine
    2. Buy a new rMBP
    3. Load your current machine's Time Machine backup onto the new machine
    4. Send your current machine in for repair
    5. Use the new machine while you wait for your repair to be completed
    6. Pick up your current machine from repair
    7. Create a Time Machine backup of the new machine
    8. Load your new machine's Time Machine backup onto your current machine
    9. Wipe the new machine
    10. Return the new machine within your 14-day no-questions-asked return window
    11. Get your refund

    Hopefully this helps.

    Good luck!

I think this is a good idea.  I thought of it too late to try when Apple had my rMBP for a week, but had I thought of it, I would have done it.

Also, I'm really amazed that you're still on and posting regularly Canuck!  I remember your numerous (and high quality) posts from last summer!  I really hope you finally got a good display.

    PLEASE TRY THIS!!!

I recently purchased a rMBP 13 inch and of course image retention after the test available in the web, light retention after 10 minutes.

IF I PLUG IN MY CINEMA DISPLAY THE RETENTION IS NOT VISIBLE ANYMORE ON THE rMP SCREEN. IF I REPEAT THE TEST ON THE CINEMA DISPLAY IT IS VISIBLE AFTER 10 MINUTES ON THE CINEMA DISPLAY!!!

Could that mean it is a software problem? Or a problem of the onboard graphic card?

Do you have an old computer you can use as a control? Try to see if your Cinema Display gives you retention while hooked up to something else.

I had my LG display replaced with a Samsung display back in September. It's worked flawlessly ever since. However, I'm still active in the ASC forum and other places because I want this problem solved once and for all. Although my rMBP is insured, I'm paranoid about getting it stolen or damaged because I'm not confident that I would be able to replace it with a problem-free machine. Once the LG image retention issue is put to bed I'll feel better.

I've had my rMBP 15" for 6 months and I just noticed the issue with image retention more recently. I took it to the Apple Store and I was able to replicate the issue but it failed their image rention test. They were not going to replace the screen for me, but they "escalated" the situation to their 'lead' because I expressed my frustration. I told them that their test wasn't a fair comparison, because I do a lot of projects in photoshop where I could be working on multiple assignments at the same time and for a longer period of time than their 4 minute test. I can't sit for a minute or two between each image to wait for it to go away. In addition, I showed the tech this thread with 449 pages and it was then that they offered to replace the screen.

The tech said that he would not be surprised if the new screen had the same issue as well... I wonder if maybe it is a software issue, since I am now noticing it?

    1. It's NOT a software issue. There are no Samsung displays that suffer from image retention, only LG.
    2. All screen replacements reported in this thread have been Samsung.

So, get your screen replaced and let us know how you make out.

It does help. I purchased my 15 rmbp on Jan 6th from Amazon. It's a week 51 build and has an LG lcd. I have been testing every day with different intervals up to 30 minutes and patterns but have not seen any traces of IR yet. I'm almost disappointed because I'd like to return it to Amazon until I get a Samsung panel. I have 30 days so I'll probably continue testing for a while. It's the best laptop I've used to date so I'm motivated to try but I can't help thinking that problems will show up later than 30 days. I like selling them later to trade up but I'm anticipating anyone interested in buying will ask who manufactured the lcd and get cold feet. Can't blame them. I still don't get a clear sense of how many total units experience problems vs don't. 400+ pages in this forum are definitely cause for concern.

Right now, my image retention is better then before. I cannot replicate it with the checkboard test, run for 10 minutes. Only if I leave browser windows for 15 to 20 minutes I can still see them after closing them. But I am going to return my computer. (It is not an sofware issue. I have image retention on my old cinema display as well but never bnoticed it) Does anybody have the screen on his/her rmbp 13 inch exchanged with a new screen? Are there samsung replacement screens for the 13 inch out there??? I love the 13 inch form factor and would buy a macbook air 11 inch instead before I would buy a 15 inch rmbp and then update if the issue is sorted out.
