Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

That quote isn't from an Apple source so its completely worthless. Apple has said that IR is normal. That's the only official thing they've been quoted as saying. So unless APPLE says they've fixed the problems, some blog or whatever posting it on the net doesn't make it true.

Apple will never say that's a problem. Infact they prefer to change the IR display with brand new Samsung.

@tkxdev    Uhhhh......  You may want to actually read the link you posted more thoroughly:

    1) The info is from october regarding 'gohsting'.

    2) They are talking about the rMBP 13" and iMac

    3) The info comes from a supposed 'brother in law' of a foxconn employee

    4) No mention anywhere of a display change or new display vendors or changes to the rMBP 15

    5) The source says they will move production to Mexico????  Haven't heard anything about that since the original article in October which gives me zero confidence in this 'sources' credibility.

Wishful thinking and reading 'between the lines' on your part though.

I just ordered one of the new builds, I will update the thread when it arrives. It is possible LG has improved its panel. I am sure Apple is putting pressure on them to do so.

According to many in the forum, LG has a better max brightness.

Na, no wishful thinking, I have returned my rMBP and got my money back and not playing the "hope and wishing" game. I don't buy every rumor mill news.. it just coincides nicely.. for me it's presumptive evidence

Apple has subtly acknowledged with their version of the checkerboardtest at the stores that they have a problem with this retinadisplay.. Sooner or later this problem will be fixed. As I said, I guess this is just some presumptive evidence.. let's see how it plays out.

BTW: Has anybody noticed that this thread has "branched" into a new discussion to which at least I dont seem to have access? As I said, Apple is aware.

Yep, I experienced it as well.  When I click on "Branched to a new discussion." on the top of this page  It says:

    Unauthorized

It appears you're not allowed to view what you requested. You might contact your administrator if you think this is a mistake.

The other thing that I was wondering, since the prices of the 768GB storage on the Apple website has gone down (it is now $700 to upgrade from 256GB to 768GB instead of $950), did Apple decide to replace the Samsung SSD with some other, cheaper brand?  Are we going to see LG-like SSDs and LG-like problems with the SSD now, e.g. "Image Retention SSDs"? I'm just surmising here, don't tear me apart Apply Fanboys, stay cool!

BTW, RE the IR: It's time for Apple to get their act together and to fix the IR issue; it has been freaking 8 months already and 460 pages on this board alone, yet nothing, absolutely nothing has happened!

Apple if you are reading, stop suing Samsung, play nice with them till you find someone who can match their quality, before you dump them! Suggestion for Apple: Start suing LG for selling you IR-ridden displays, instead!

I have Image Retention on my Mac Book Pro Retina 15in. LG screen

    Apple rep said its normal.

I am a graphic designer and now I can't do my work properly.

They don't care and won't change my display.

I am so disappointed in their attitude.

They have probably lost a customer.

I will try Tim Cook but don't expect a reply.

Talked to Consumer Affairs today and they are going to take up my case as they feel that it's not right.

Previous post have alluded to the fact the there is an official Apple response that IR is normal. Can someone point me to this source please (there is a support note called "Avoiding image persistence on Apple LCD displays" but I'm not sure if this is the one that is alluded to).

I returned a MBPr last month due to the IR issue, but if Apple have officially acknowledged that the IR is normal, I will look elsewhere for a new laptop (I'm not interested in repeatedly returning the laptop in the hope of getting a Samsung display).

    Hi!

I bought my 15" MBPR in july last year and had no issues with the display until a few days ago. 2 days ago I started to notice the Image Retention issue, at first it was slight but it seems to get worse every day

    Hi Jospeh.

Have you talk to a genius in an Apple Store or you just call the customer care?

Try again, I understand your feelings and I think that's not the right way Apple is carring on the all thing.
