Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Also, though not related to the screen topic, I wanted to pose this question to readers of this forum, as you all seem to be (like myself) hyper-aware of any issues. Are any of you experincing any of the scroll lag that Anandtech talked about and others have discussed? I've got a clean system (no migraitons for me) and I do see this lag all over the place - Safari, Mail, etc. Not enough to make me want to return it, but still definitely enough to trouble me. Thoughts?

I have experienced scroll lag with my rMBP, it is pretty much exactly as Anandtech described.  It is quite apparent when scrolling through web pages in Safari.  A few things:

    1. The Mountain Lion update did help in many areas but there are still cases where the lag is apparent.  It's just not nearly as bad as it was with Lion and I personally find it quite tolerable.

    2. I run with the 1920x1200 HiDPI setting, and this is by far the most demanding setting.  It is because the rendering is actually done at 3840x2400 and scaled down to 2880x1800 to give an antialiased effect, rather than rendered at 1920x1200 and scaled up to 2880x1800 (which looks pixellated),  3840x2400 is the largest resolution mode possible, so 1920x1200 HiDPI provides the worst performance from a lag perspective.  The other resolutions are much, much less laggy.

As it is, even 1920x1200 HiDPI has sufficient performance with Mountain Lion that I don't usually notice the lag.

I have confirmed that I definitely have the image retention issue and that my panel is LG.  Just to add another data point.

I am going to wait a few months and see if a general and effective solution becomes available before asking for a fix from Apple, rather than dealing with the crapshoot that seems to be the current 'fix'.  As it stands, the image retention, while annoying, is not particularly impactful on my workflow and also isn't really even noticeable for me most of the time anyway.  So I don't mind waiting.

    Good luck everyone.

So the Real and Million Dollar Question IS.

What is Apple going to do with all these rMBPs that have been returned????

    Sell them as Refurbs?

Turn them around and Sell them as New?

Turn them around and Reship them to people returning one for another?

Has anyone kept a record of the serial # of the units they have returned?

Alright, another update (back from page 30). My advanced replacement rMBP shipped out today and I found that it's a week 33. Hopefully the issue has been solved by now but I will report back with a screen comparison between the the two once it arrives. It is shipping expedited so it's going to arrive sometime Wednesday morning.

I'd be interested to know which countries are more likely to get a Samsung or LG display on their rMBPs.

Is there a 50-50 chance of getting either display type in the USA when compared to being more likely to get an LG in UK, or a Samsung in Germany for instance? Or does it depend on the spec of the machine as to which display is used?

I'm just about to push the button on buying a 2.3/16gb RAM/512 SSD in the UK and wondering what display it'll likely ship with?

Any UK users of rMBP who'd care to share their experiences?

    Good question !

i live in Germany and im going to buy a rMBP on Monday. Ill tell you how many times i had to exchange it to get a Samsung screen.

by the way, if i get the base version, without any upgrades, could i get a replacement right in the Apple Store ?

I'm a UK user, so far i had one rMBP with really bad IR, that was an LG. The replacement was also an LG, no IR but terrible whites, contrasts and a very noticeable pink hue. That one has also been returned. I'm as of yet undecided whether to get a third one as i dont have the time for all this hassle.

    @NNEU

I don't think that you will get a replacement. I'm also from germany and my order (base model) was five business days in processing.. now its on the flight from china to prague to merge it with the gift card

But its a good line of thought... what happens with all the returns?

    Tkank you for the answer!

You ordered it from the Apple Online Store, right ? I think i will order it from Amazon as you can send it back for 30 days.

Ok I think that was a mistake. If you order a base-model (non BTO) from the apple store you can get a replacement if yours has an issue. Maybe it will be a stock model with 24h delivery.

If you order it from amazon, you can sent it back if you are in a 14-day-period. 30 days is just for unopened items!

But: If you send it back and get another from amazon that will be to 99% the same charge with the same screen.
