Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    If you are like me and got an LG screen with your Macbook Pro retina I didn't get the ghosting/ image retention until 6 MONTHS later. My screen was flawless from July 2012 to December 2012. So just because you don't see in 2 or 3 weeks doesn't mean its not going to happen.

    I have tried talking to Apple's senior support execs but they won't help me. I don't have an Apple store near me. I did take it to two Apple resellers that had licensed techs on staff but they said my computer is fine. Of course when Apple heard this from the two different places I went to they said they couldn't do anything for me.

    So in the next month or two I will head over to Vancouver BC and take it to an Apple store to see if my luck is any better. Not keeping my hopes up though. I showed the techs the IR that was on my screen but they said their diagnosis software said my computer was okay. I just think they didn't want to take the machine apart as both said they had never done it before on a retina macbook.

    That's exactly what I'm talking about, people!  A company that doesn't admit a problem, does not fix it!  And I'm sorry to burst many bubbles here, but to hope that the new Feb. 2013 iteration of the rMBPs will be with a fixed LG screen is not realistic.  LG screens have problem with the manufacturing process, i.e. fixing the problem will take replacing the technology, i.e. expensive machines and time.  If such big change is happening at the LG plants, we would have heard it by now.  I think one has better chances in winning the Samsung lottery, than the of IR-free LG screen lottery.

    Actually, the fact that so many (all?) LG screens experience this issue and reports of Apple doing away with Samsung as a supplier had me in a little bit of a panic.  What if this current gen is the last to have Samsung displays at all?  Makes more sense to play the Samsung lottery until you get one knowing you'll be set for at least a couple years and by then hopefully the bugs really will have been worked out.

    I just spoke to a apple employer on the phone here in Sweden, called Apple store directly and had some questions about this issue and if the new models are affected by IR.

    He told me that he had heard that the issue should be gone with the new 2013 models. He said thats why they introduced this new 2013 models so fast after the 2012 model. He was pretty sure that the issue would be gone and thats why they released new models. He couldnt "confirm" it but he had heard that was the case they released new models.

    Maybe someone can try to get more info by calling in your country and see what they say?

    Sorry for bad english.

    Returing my 2012 model tomorrow with LG panel to get the new 2013.

    Hey, you may actually be right. I just came across an article and it seems to confirm that the new 2013 updated models have fixed the problem.

    If the problem with these displays was in fact a heat issue, why are only the LG screens affected yet not Samsungs? Shouldn't have anything to do with a thermal issue since the 2012 rMBP had great cooling already.

    @Potential_Mac_User & NNEU

    Could you please keep your uninformed, blatantly non factual and inaccurate comments to yourselves?  Your beginning to sound like trolls.  Is there an issue with IR on some rMBP 15"? Yes.  But in no way is it affecting all LG displays.  If this was as widespread an issue as you claim then think about how major the news would be worldwide, remember 'antennagate'....

    For the record neither the rMBP screen nor 'All LG screens' (as Potential_Mac_User thinks) develop IR.  LG supplies screens for the iPad 2, 3, and 4, the iPhone 3, 4, 5, the regular MacBook pros, the MacBook Air and iPods. Any significant IR issues on those devices?  And that's just for Apple.  LG is one of the primary LCD suppliers for HP, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, Acer and many other 2nd tier OEM computer manufacturers.  They also have over 50% market share worldwide for the proffesional LCD imaging market which includes medical imaging, wide color gamut lcd's, film editing, graphic design and scientific research.  They make the panels for GE (Cat scanners), Siemens (Ultra sound) and almost every High res greyscale panel for the digital Xray market.  In addition they are the primary supplier of large screen professional High Gamut IPS (full RGB +) panels to NEC, Eizo, LaCie, Dell, JVC, Wacom and HP.

    I still have no signs of IR on my LG display.  Rather than worrying about IR, or 'playing the lottery', I just use my computer which has significant improved my mobile workflow to the point that I'm going to order more of them for my photography business.  The one thing I did do regarding IR, when I ordererd was to ask Apple to make a note on my account that if IR develops it would be unacceptable for my business needs and a replacement would have to be provided (no Apple store on my Island), they did so without issue.  So I am confident that if IR becomes an issue it will be taken care of.  FYI I was talking to AppleCare last week about a Time Machine issue and out of curiosity I asked them to check the notes on my rMBP, sure enough the first one was about provoding direct replacement if IR develops due to customers graphic requirements.

    Maybe it's heat with LG screens in particular and if you remove the heat they don't experience IR.  That being said, I doubt the computers indoors in Apple's showrooms are experiencing any high ambient temperatures or running the processor very hard and those have IR all over them.  If these can't handle low ambient temperatures and minimal computing requirements, no amount of tweaking under the hood is going to lower the temperatures lower than that under heavy use or higher ambient temps.

    Heat hasn't caused any problems for me (so far).  I'm in Hawaii with no AC in the studio so ambient temps are about 80 indoors and higher if I am using it outdoors at a photo shoot.  I max out all 8 cores regularly doing batch file processing in Photoshop, at least a few hours each day at 100% CPU loads.  Thermal management on this machine is very well designed and I've had no issues with heat or IR....

    @ALL:

    Apple has a support message to remove the "burn-in":

    Hi Jajaba,

    What kind of internal temperatures are you seeing during moderate use (i.e. when you're not doing heavy image processing)?

    The reason I ask is because, although my machine seems to run really well and without issues, I'm seeing CPU temperatures in the 60's and 70's, and sometimes 80's and 90's, during what I would characterize as moderate use (i.e. surfing the web, listening to music, and coding). I'm using the "Temperature Gauge" app from the Mac app store.

    Anyway, I'd be interested to know. Seeing that you're such a heavy user, I'd feel a little bit better if your "moderate-use" temperatures were similar to mine.

    Thanks!

    I just bought a 13'3 MBPr this morning in the apple store  :13'3/2.6/256/8, it's an early 2013 one.

    The command line to see the screen's manufacturer doesn't work, but I've made the ten minutes test with the black and white boxes and switching to the grey font, and no IR at all. Very happy, it's an awesome and wonderful  tool !

    I just picked up the new revised model this past Saturday at the Apple store. I have the 2.7, 16, 512 for 2799.

    Sure enough it is the LG display. Also, sure enough, I already can see hints of IR.  I had swapped the one I bought in January because if the IR. The IR gets progressively worse as time goes on. I'm most likely going to return and wait for this matter to be corrected...

    Surnova, sorry to burst your bubble but IR will show up. It doesn't usually appear until four to six months down the road. Maybe they fixed it, but it's doubtful. Keep us updated.

    I hope it wont. I bought the old version at a high tech store sunday, and i got my money back this morning, because it had IR right out the box. It was the 256 go 13'3, but the old version ( before 2013).

    That's why I went to the apple store, hoping to get one without IR. And this one, after 2/3 tests of 45 min of black and white squares is still perfect.

    So it may pop later, but for now, it's perfect to me
