Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I think this misses the point, there is the fact that my C4D background is dark grey so I can see ir after only 5 mins, but more than that

    -  apple seem to be avoiding the issue and not telling us if this problem would get worse with time.

    -  most of us seem to be using graphics program's, and bought this (despite the big price oremium) because of apples claims for the screen, they never mentioned vibrant colour with the ghost of your last screen mixed in ;)

    - we know that the Samsung screens do not seem to have the problem, meet apple keep sending out the substandard LG screens, this is unacceptable to make quality a lottery for such an expensive premium laptop.

If u want the problem better appreciated by apple I'd suggest taking it into other forums to get it more widely appreciated. Once it hurts apple sales you'd certainly think they get onto it faster. Everyone should start a new thread on about 5 different forums. Oh and make IR comments on each retina review from all the big sites. That will vastly improve "people's awareness" and therefore "apples awareness".

    Hello folks,

MacBook Pro Retina (stock model) from June 18th here, only started noticing IR two days ago (probably because I use a Cinema Display attached to it most of the time).

I have a LG display (darn!)

I set up an appointment at the Genius Bar here in Montreal and they told me they could repair it (not exchange it of course, beyond 14 days...), but they don't have the part (whole top of clamshell including display), so they are ordering one (3-5 days), then I have to bring in my rMBP, then leave it there for 2-3 days...

    sigh

I am extremely disappointed about the quality control process for the last few years. This is my 18th Apple laptop since 2005 (I buy and resell at each new model release) and I have already returned two laptops in the past two years for display related problems, also two iPads (1st and 3rd gen), and at least one of my iPhones had the ugly yellow tinted thing going on...

I hope for a Samsung display because of the feedback about their quality. But it's looks like Russian roulette, except in reverse (you only get lucky once maybe) !

It's so noticeable and happens in less than five minutes of bright static images then switching to darker backgrounds. It's also *very* persistent, as I turned the brightness all the way to dark/no light and back up a few minutes later, and it was all there still...

    Sad. So much money.

(Apologies for double posting, I just had a case of the dual Apple IDs not being merged...)

You don't need any reason to change a rmbp with IR, like a use Photoshop or other. You can only love dark gray background and use safari all day, you spent 2300+ euro, you have all right to do wath you want whit yuor pc, also stay all day to wath dark gray background or turn arround the mouse for hours..

Another time, Sorry for my very bad english..

I'm quoting 100% of what you said. The voice must be spread about this issues.

Try to speak to a manager. I got mine on june 20th. Then I started noting the IR in the middle of july, but i was in college at that time and there was no apple store near me. I got back home this friday and set up a genius bar appointment on saturday. The first guy i talked to said they could repair it. Then i spoke to the manager, and he offered me a replacement.

I just ordered a stock Retina MacBook Pro from Amazon. If i have an LG screen, can i just take it to an Apple Store and get a replacement or do i have to send it back to Amazon?

hi... If you buy from amazon then you must return to amazon. Apple can only offer you a repair etc.

I have just returned mine on Thursday because it arrived with faulty left speaker. The display was fine, right speaker was good but the left one was buzzing, distorted sound. 2300 Eur laptop. No way I would accept that. I suggest you do the same if any faults emerge in the first days. I think best is to wait and see what comes up next...is this a small number of faulty devices out there or a lerge scale problem ???

    Thank you for your answer!

ill see.. Maybe i will get a perfect model. If not, i will go to the Apple Store and get it repaired. Does Apple usually have all the parts to repair the rMBP ?

I have learned to be patient and research all newly released Apple products before buying them after buying one of the first unibody iMacs. It destroyed my DVDs (from sharp and untapered aluminum edge around the mouth of the player) and constantly dropped bluetooth connections every 10 minutes. Then an internal fan died. It was a nightmare. I used to criticise Windows for releasing a product and using their customers as testers. As I get to know Apple better, I realise they do the same thing, but with $1200 to $3200 dollar computers. Still, there is no other company that makes a laptop worth buying at all.  What to do?

My actual addition to this conversation is that today I went into the Apple Store and sure enough, opening Safari and leaving a Wikipedia page open for a few minutes caused clearly visible image retention. The white square and the text was there and obvious. Defective product right there on the showroom floor. When I asked an Apple Genius about the issue and why I would buy a laptop when the showroom demo laptops are defective his emotionless "what do you want me to do about it" did not inspire me to pull out my credit card.

Be smart and wait. Hopefully Apple will stop releasing products before fully addressing such obvious defects. Honestly, do you think the engineers never spotted this? I doubt it.

We aren't nitpicking. This is see are A pee.

That is just foolish talk. There are many name brand companies making very good notebook computers.

If they weren't they would be out of business.

Honestly, what other computers can you give as examples that can compete with a 15" quadcore i7? I would like to check out some other options.

Both Dell and HP to name 2. Then you have Lenovo for a third. They all have i7 CPUs available in Dual and Quad cores. Apple does not have an exclusive market with Intel on the 3rd Gen i7 CPUs.

In fact, if you haven't noticed, all computers made today use the exact same hardware. Same CPUs, RAM, HDD, DVD drives you name it, it is all the same.
