Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

yes i saw it, looks like a perfect screen, i was never a big fan of the samsung because of the yellow whites compared to lg

maybe they realy updated the hardware and lg made a better display with less to no IR

but mine still has IR after 5 minutes you can cleary see it

but mine is a SJA1 display

would like to hear from other users with the SJA2 LG panel

i had a SJA1,too. 2 weeks, no IR (ok, if you leave a safari window open for like 30 min you can see very slightly IR). but most LG panels don't show IR right from the beginning, it will get worse after a few months. and every LG panel older than half a year i saw had massive IR.

is your one also a early 2013 model?

my first retina from august last year, had massive image retention, and like you said it was getting worse with time, after 6 month it was realy bad even only after 1 minute!

even it showed no or only slightly IR i sent it back.

so did you get your display exchanged by apple?

i had no problem exchanging the screen at the apple store in Augsburg.

They didn't even check if there was a problem or not.

They told me that 99% sure it would be replaced with a samsung screen, and indeed, it was.

You can actually see very minor IR in your youtube video.  If you pause and move frame by frame as soon as the checkerboard disappears you can see the image fade away to solid grey over the next 3 - 4 frames.  I can see this much better on my NEC RGB gamut display whcih has very accurate grey level calibration than on my rMBP.  This is very minor and could be considered 'normal' in the sense that the crystals in each pixel have to realign to change the image, which no matter what, takes a certain amount of time.  Your video made me realize that this could be a way to actually quantitatively test if IR is getting worse over time.  If you record the screen change and count the frames until the image becomes fully grey you have a baseline to compare it to in the future.  Obviously the recording quality and frame rate would make a difference, 60 frames/sec would make it more accurate.  Also the temperature of the display would be a variable as the colder the 'liquid' is the slower the crystals respond.

I see what you're talking about, but I think in this case the retention you see in the video is due to the compression applied which retains the pattern for a few frames, not actual retention on the screen.

It will be very interesting to see if the SJA2 screen resolves the issue. It'd be good if people with the new SJA2 screen could do longer IR tests to see how it fares.

Surprised to hear Apple are still using both LG models in the 2013 line.

you are right. i tested the same setup with an macbook air and it shows the same pattern for about 2 frames after the change. it could be compression of the video or actually the chip of the camera which has image retention

yes they changed the panel on my first retina, i was at the apple store in augsburg, to my luck they had one in stock and changed it the same day ... i am from nürnberg btw, but i was feeling more save at a apple store..

so i made the long way to augsburg

they replaced it with a samsung panel, they always exchange for a samsung, because they know very well that almost every lg panel will have IR

i was happy with it but gave it to my sister

and my new one has more problems then my old 2012 model

allready called apple for a exchange, also have this fan issue, and my trackpad made problems (left side of trackpad was not properly working)

i hope for a new lg or hopefully a good samsung panel this time, fingers crossed

but all things aside, atm i am realy not pleased with my mac

apple costumer care is still the best service you can get, this people will make it right at the end

when you are friendly and respectful, they will do whatever they can do

That makes sense.  I do think that this would be a valid way to test if IR is getting 'worse' over time with the proper video equipment and a controlled test method.  Obviously it's not very practicle for an average consumer to do but it is a way that perhaps a third party could use to document if IR gets worse over time without waiting until it is noticable to the naked eye.

So I followed this post before I got my retina 15'' in late August 2012. I followed it a bit after then stopped keeping up. I learned that my laptop has a LG screen. I have yet to see any IR, I just tested it. Luckily no problems here.

Most people who have had the Retina MBPs since launch have found that the LG screens do get worse over time. This experiment could be interesting, but I really don't think this level of complexity is necessary - I found that the degredation can be measured quite easily very early on in the laptop's life. By putting a checkerboard on the screen for half an hour, then measuring the length of time it takes to dissapear the day you get the laptop, then repeating at, say, day 5, you will generally find that there has been an increase in IR level (although far from the level needed to become problematic in day-to-day use, that takes longer).
