Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Samsung also makes very nice notebooks with Samsung screens.  Seems like Apple is stuck between a rock and a hard place being a victim of its own success.

Just go up to any TV store and look at LCD, plasma, or LED TVs.  LG is in the budget range, and quality is lower than Sony or Samsung.

It's not acceptable to ship so many different screens.

I was thinking of ordering an rMBP, but after reading the ridiculous number of horror stories, I'm not so sure anymore. It's not likely that I will receive a model with the display from Samsung, and I cannot have multiple laptops sent to me so I can test their displays and return them to Apple. I need one computer that would come before school starts, so I can install all the required software. I'd expect that to come in working order, with the display looking impeccable, and the speakers sounding great, but most importantly, everything functioning like a NEW, perfectly normal computer. This kind of build quality that I've been reading about in you guys' discussion is far below Apple's standards.

I have noticed something strange also; there are TWO main threads about this topic. That's perfectly normal, but what isn't is that the other thread talks about what's a SOFTWARE issue. It's not ghosting, but rather some puzzle-piece screen tearing type problem (anyone who has ever paused AVCHD video in VLC will know what I mean). That problem is obviously a software one because they were able to take screenshots of it. So, are there TWO ISSUES? One about ghosting/IR problems where whatever's on the display lingers, and a software issue where the screen doesn't render the scaling properly after sleep? If so, problems with the computer after I buy it could be even worse than I thought.

For those who haven't gone through that thread, I urge you to read through that, or, if you're feeling lazy, at least start around page 3 - 5 to the end because that's where everything really is. And if you have an rMBP, which I think I'm the only one in this whole discussion who doesn't , then telling us if you've had any of those software-related bugs would help. The people in that thread, and other websites, seem to say that installing Mountain Lion or a "MacBook Pro Mid 2012 Graphics Stability Update" fixed their software related tearing/graphics rendering issues. For some reason, I think I remember that nobody in that thread really mentioned the huge problem here, the ghosting image retention problem, which is obviously the hardware. Sorry for the long post, but I'm just so confused as to why people in this thread or the other haven't noticed BOTH problems together, and I'm just at a loss to whether I should order one or not, because I don't have the time to return it and get another one if something's wrong.

Well i'll give an update soonish on how this rMBP performs. I was totally not expectign a samsung screen off all the comments up on here. But then again do remember that there may be only 100 people on this thread and the rest of the world is happy? I'm imaginging apple has sold many hundeds of 1000's if not millions of these laptops by now, so as much as its a huge issue for the few it may not be such a huge issue for the masses.

I can understand just how annoyed those who are getting the crap ones must feel, I really feel sorry for you guys! Anyway i'll give a software update on how she renders, games, and overal goes with software and graphics. So far the screen is just friggen awesome! I'm already hating having to look back up at my dell screens hooked onto my mac pro! So ugly and blah!

    Right.

My 2nd replacement has just arrived (so my 3rd rMBP overall including the first one). I am just charging it up and I will post back shortly with my results.

If this one isn't "good" I am going to return for a refund. I've had enough and I don't have time to keep mucking about with replacements/reinstalling my system every few weeks.

Apple. I hope you got it right...for my own sake, I really like this machine!

    Back soon...

    Well...

I got an LG screen. But all is not lost. It seems fine. No IR noticed as yet...I will keep you posted.

Just want to reiterate that there is no difference in quality between the LG and Samsung screen in my case having direct comparison - both beautiful screens and capable of the same level of display quality in every way. Also, continually testing 'extreme scenarios' will no doubt actually harm your screen I'd have to imagine.

Just to keep you guys updated, still no IR on my LG, week 32 build, 2.6/16gb/768.

Stop testing for it then - you're reducing the life of your screen by 'beating on it' with worst case scenarios. Just use as normal and enjoy!

I would say… let Safari open, browsing webpages as usual. If your panel is defect, you probably will notice minor IR on it. Simply, just like my case.

After one month normal usage, the panel start wearing off. I do not think the test will lead to the worst case scenarios. Simply go to  Apple Store and randomly pick a cMBP to compare with a rMBP. Especially pay attention for place where Dock icons locate.

If Apple's IPS panel could not fulfil our normal usage, I would not consider it as a mature technique.

Oh, I'm not testing it anymore.  I just using it regularly and stating the fact that theres no IR.  LCDs been around for awhile and people already know issues of "burn-in." No need to do any extensivie tests on it.  The first couple of days I had it, I did test it once or twice just because of what I've been reading on this thread, but after that, just regular use.

considering the purpose of this thread is to monitor this burn-in issue, i am interested in knowing if people have recieved one that is working properly and it makes sense that if you are following this thread than you are too. it's also relavent how well Apple is treating people with this issue. leaving a safari window open for a few minutes is not "beating on it".we don't need to know every step of the way, but a quick, "i got one three days ago and it's working great" is good. once this thread dies away, we can be confident at least that it's safe(r) to buy.

    Hello,

I received my rMBP just before the middle of July and it's been great. No IR issue. I checked it again yesterday with the gray background, just to be sure. Nothing.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that the problem is as widespread as this thread seems to indicate, because there's almost nothing in the news about it. When the iPhone 4 had the "antenna-gate" issue, which I think most people would agree was kind of blown out of proportion, it made it to CNN and several other major news websites. Even ZDNet, which is notorious for "anti-INSERT_OS_PLATFORM_HERE" zealots, doesn't seem to have anything regarding this rMBP-specific issue. I searched for "burn-in" and "ghosting", both of which turned up lots of results, but the only relevant article I found was from March 2012 regarding the iPad 3 retina display.

Anyway, I do believe that this is a definite issue for the people who've been unlucky enough to experience it, but I think it's fairly rare.

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Hi J. Chiu,

What do you mean by: "After one month normal usage, the panel start wearing off.".

Do you mean you had the problem initially, but it's since gone away --- OR --- do you mean you started noticing the problem after a month of use?

    Please clarify.

    Regards,

    Peter

I've got one about 3 weeks ago on week 30 and it's the best computer I've ever had so far. (LCD panel Samsung)

And I've got all sort of computers from HP, DELL, iMac, and Mac Pro. It beats them all without a question and I do developing and networking so I do work with these machines for real.

I paid all my saved on it and I don't even know how this last long, but where ever you are and what ever you do go get one of these if you' need a brand new machine.

But let me be totally honest with you. Be careful what you wish for. After using this machine for few days, every screen is going to look as ugly as you can imagine! And the speed. My Mac Pro with 6-core Intel Xeon looks slow in front of this machine because of its super fast flash storage.

I'm lovin it and I hope I can keep it for at least 3 years.

    Best of luck.
