Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

    I have no idea.  Our other two LG's are used much more lighty as far as CPU / GPU demands, they mostly do basic mobile photo editing using the intel integrated GPU (for battery life).  They're only about 3 weeks old so it may be to early to tell, but so far no IR....

    So far I don't care about the burn-in. I just want to know one thing: is this defect destructive (i.e., does it get worse, can it make the screen not work one day) or is this burn-in the worst thing I'll get from it?

    I have not heard of any getting so bad that the display is unusable.  The IR primarily only shows up on a dark grey backround.  In general I believe that many here are blowing the issue way out of proportion as far as the usablility of the MBPr, even with moderate IR on dark grey screen.  That being said the issue is still something that has not been dealt with properly by Apple and considering the price of these machines it should not be occuring at all....

    By the way 'Burn In' is not what this is, it's Image retention or percistence.  Two totally different things.  Burn in is an old CRT (and on some plasma displays) issue where the image could be permanently seen on the display and no way to repair it.

    Guys, have to update you on this one.. noticed that other users have been commenting on fan speeds. I am running smcfancontrol. and before my screen change, it was usual to see the laptop constantly around 100.. Now after the replacement (now have a sammy screen) the temp is 50.. Its never been that cool.. Now 48 even! current fan speeds (now 46) 2157 and 2003.

    temp 45. Screen brightness is 60%. Battery is also good.. been on it for at least 20 minutes, shows 97%.. This has definitely improved since the replacement from LG to Samsung screen.

    That's a good point. However, perhaps that's the source of the problem. Maybe the LG displays are not sealed adequately and somehow their seals degrade faster in dryer environments.

    That's a good point. However, perhaps you're onto something. Maybe the LG displays are not sealed adequately and somehow their seals degrade faster in dryer environments. Interestingly, I didn't start seeing IR until I went to the desert (Osoyoos, BC, Canada) for a long weekend. Immediately after that I started noticing IR and found this thread. Perhaps the time it takes LG panels to exhibit IR is directly proportional to humidy-level and time. The extra variables add some complexity, but it would explain why some customers see IR right away, some not until after several months, and some haven't seen IR yet.

    FYI

    I didn't double-post. I edited it and for some reason the ASC website left the original post up as well.

    Hello everyone. Just following up on my previous post I just received my MBP retina display back today. Very happy that it was ready today being Tuesday when I only left it at the Apple store Friday afternoon first of all. They completely replaced my ghosting screen, specs below. Looks like it is now a Samsung screen from my original LG. Also to my surprise they replaced my SSD hard drive I guess they deemed it problematic even though I didn't think there was any issues there, very happy about that as well. Ran the few retina test display websites and found no ghosting whatsoever. So far very happy. Thank you Apple I hope the rest of you have the same results!

    I am not trying to confuse anyone. I am also not hypothesizing wishfully. I am not saying that there is evidence that something has changed. All I am saying is that my LG display has a new model number, LP154WT1-SJA2. I am also saying that as of yet, nobody with an SJA2 LG display has publicly (i.e., on the internet) expressed that they have experienced IR problems. I am aware that it can take months for IR to appear.

    I have run the 10 minute IR test at http://www.mitchmalone.name/retina-test/, and experienced no IR on my rMBP. I am aware that this does not mean that the SJA2 LG display is free from the IR problem, or revised in such a way that it indicates the problem is fixed. Don't put words into my mouth.

    What I am saying is that there is a chance that this SJA2 display is revised in such a way that it fixes the IR problem. I am not saying that if you get an LG SJA2 display, you should not try to replace it. That's your choice. I had the Apple Store employees open two more rMBPs, and both were LG displays. I decided to keep my SJA2.

    Apple will never admit that the problem is fixed. They haven't even admitted that the problem is specific to the LG displays. They haven't even admitted that it is a problem. In fact, they seem to suggest that it is normal: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

    So, in short:

    1) There is a new LG display (LP154WT1-SJA2) that has appeared in the last month or so.

    2) There is no evidence that this LG SJA2 display exhibits the IR problem.

    3) There is no evidence that this LG SJA2 display is conclusively free from the IR problem.

    4) We are unlikely to know whether the LG SJA2 display is free from the IR problem for at least several months.

    Are you happy now, DomdiDom?

    @Canuck

    Good theory, but if the actually LCD panel layup 'seal' was open in any way then you'd have leaking fluid coming out of the display and it would definitely be noticable in the area where fluid leaked out, basically no image at all in any area that loses fluid.  As a matter of fact the whole display could possible be dead if there was a void in the actual LCD panel, depending on how the circuit matrix is layed out it could just short out all active pixels.

    @Jeffery...

    Sorry but there have been at least 2 people with SJA2 displays that have reported IR.  Can't recall the names but it was clearly posted in this thread after the 2013 refresh units started shipping.

    By the way, has anyone reported if the 2013 refresh models with Samsung displays have a new Suffix or number change?  If any common item was changed in the refresh then both versions would have to change thier P/N's.  This could be something as minor as a connector color change, adding a new label or changing  mounting screw location.....

    I haven't found either of those posts you mention - link me to their posts. I've done some pretty intensive searching of the SJA2 code. Not all the Early 2013 units have SJA2 displays - just because someone has an Early 2013 rMBP doesn't mean they have an LG SJA2 display. One of the Early 2013 rMBPs that they opened for me at the Apple Store was an SJA1.

    If you're talking about this post (I've quoted it below), the poster does not specify whether his display is SJA2 or SJA1. As far as I have been able to discover, they did not start manufacturing rMBPs with the SJA2 display until about 3 weeks ago (first week of March).

    I have a revised 2013 model and it is LG. I've had it for 5 days now and I already can see IR....

    I don't have time to search back, but I am certain that there were 2 posters with SJA2 versions who reported IR.  This was after several similar posts like yours above and they debunked the idea that SJA2 = No IR.  I don't really care either way as we have 4 perfect LG's (SJA1's) and 2 perfect Samungs.  If anything goes south I'm confident Apple will take care of any issues that may develop now or in the future...

    Why would I be happy? You've made your point  clearly this time which is what you should have done in the first place. I still think it's wishful thinking because of exactly what you say. Apple doesn't say there's a problem, so why would they fix anything? I think you're completely naive to think otherwise.
