Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I received a week 32 2.6/16/512 macbook pro with an LG screen this morning. After a short period of usage (5 minutes), the safari browser window border was clearly visible on the dark gray background when minimized.

What is the consensus on the best way to pursue a replacement - calling apple or taking it to an apple store?

But let me be totally honest with you. Be careful what you wish for. After using this machine for few days, every screen is going to look as ugly as you can imagine! And the speed. My Mac Pro with 6-core Intel Xeon looks slow in front of this machine because of its super fast flash storage.

we are all interested in buying a retina macbook pro, or bought one and are sharing a common problem with it. that's why we are following this thread on the burn-in issue. before sending an email to all our inboxes please consider wether you are actually contributing to the purpose of this thread.

    Yeah.

I got my 1st rMBP on later June with IR issue out of box. Then, I went to the Genius bar, and they replaced a new rMBP to me.

The 2nd rMBP seemed all right at begining becasue I tested it once. Later (after a month), the mountain lion came out. I upgraded my rMBP and noticed a thread that question if there is anyone got IR issue after upgrading to ML. So I checked my rMBP 2nd time. Unfortunately, I had IR issue on the 2nd rMBP.

This time, I went to Genius bar again. They offered me two options: the first option is waitting for a new machine; the second one is to return it. I chose the latter.

Last Sat, I brought the 3rd rMBP from Apple Store. I could identify minor IR from the Calendar Dock icon yesterday. But I cannot jump to conclusion too soon. I am going to see if this panel is defective or not within 14 days.

I told that just for you! Good luck.

    PS:

And BTW, I'm on page 1 of this thread. SO realize how many I've got in my inbox when I've got Samsung without any IR. So you've got problem with that you see stop notification email.

i'm sorry i didn't mean to offend you. there was just nothing about the burn-in problem which is the topic of this thread. actually that's not even true, you did state you have a week 30 which is relavant so i am sorry. I also confess I haven't followed the thread for that long.

it is very random which ones have this issue isn't it? or is it confirmed that the samsung screens ones don't have the issue at all? have there been confirmed cases in the samsung model? are LG and Samsung the only two manufacturers or are there others?

I haven't seen anyone IR issue with Samsung LCD panel here. No one wants to jump to the conlusion that just LG has this problem, but from the day one there is not even one Samsung with this problem.

That is not true, i do have IR on my rMBP with Samsung screen and i did posted a few pages back. Unless you consider slight IR as no IR then no Samsung screen has had major IR issue to date as much as we know of. If not mistaken there was another member that posted about slight IR with his Samsung screen rMBP replacement weeks ago so i wouldn't say all Samsung screens are free of fault.

Take it straight to an Apple Store and save your time. I talked today to an Apple woman on the phone and after 20 minutes of all kind of resetting and system checks, she just took an appointment at an Apple Store for me.

This is exactly how it went for me:

Got mine on July 26th, no problems at all until August 11th, when the IR problem showed up. I have an LG display, 2.3GHz with 16GB Ram 256GB, built week 30

Oh yes you were the first one mention this and I did comment on yours. We are in the same country remember me. (Malaysia)

But you said it gets gone by restarting I thought it would be a software or something. But if it is a IR issue well it's too bad that the Samsung has this problem too. Even less than LG but still has it.

    Thanks.

Well then you probably googled something totally irrelevant. This story is all over the internet, just from a quick google search I found articles that are weeks old on the mbp retina display burn in issue on pgmag and apple insider:

To follow up on my previous story, after two faulty rMBPs with LG screens, I went in to the apple store again for my third replacement. I wanted to do tests there just in case it also had the issue, so I could just swap it out again. Sadly it has an LG screen. But I left a checkered pattern up on the dark grey background for 30 minutes and had absolutely no IR.

THEN this idiot who works at the 'genius' bar started to give me a **** of a hard time. He literally looked over my shoulder and was like, "what are you doing? are you forcing IR onto your computer?" I said no, I'm just testing to see if it has it. And from that point on he tried to convince me that every screen would have IR if you do what I'm doing. I kindly explained that if a screen is built properly, it wouldnt have IR after 15 minutes. He not so kindly retorted that yes, it would. Then he went into the back and brought me a printout from management about 'taking care of your screen'. He basically accused me of breaking the screen. I then asked him if within the 14 days if i noticed IR, would they replace it again? he laughed and said no way, youve already swapped out two, we wont swap out another for 'an issue that isnt real'. As I argued with him about the 'realness' of the issue, more so called geniuses flocked to his side, and it quickly turned into me vs the idiot bar. I told them that apple care told me that I had to go through them, and nobody else could orhestrate a swap if it became faulty. He said yea that sounds about right, tough luck man. It took every ounce of restraint in me to just walk away.

I was happy enough with the computer up until that point. But the arrogance and ignorance of the idiots in that store has forever turned me off to that location. I have been building computers since i was 11 and know my share of technical info, and i was running circles around these guys as far as tech knowledge goes.

UGH so frustrating! so what do I do if my screen gets IR again? I'm literally SOL and apple gets to keep my $4k??

No, you use your brain and tell apple to send you a return label and go to your nearest fedex center to ship your computer back for a replacement instead of dealing with the idiot bar.

I tried. Applecare toldme that they were unable to handle the return because I have to deal directly with the store.

You bought it from the store?

Then I have no idea. Are you within the 14 days? Tell them apple has a no questions asked 14 day refund policy.

edit: next time buy from the online store.
