Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

Got my Mac Book Pro Retina in the first week of release. LG

Discovered IR after three months.

Had screen replaced with no trouble, LG

Discovered IR AGAIN after three months.

Asked to have the screen displace replaced.

I was told it was normal and it would not be replaced.

I talked to three Apple Care people everyone higher in position than the next.

They all said no replacement and I could not speak to anyone else.

I sent screen shots to Apple of this thread with people having their screens replace.

I received a call from Apple telling me they would replace the screen.

Took it to the reseller and they replaced it.

I did a jig (dance) in the store when I ran the terminal command and found a Samsung.

Checked for dead pixels and yellow tinges. All seems good.

Checked Apple logo on back of screen, it's a little pink/purple but I can live with it.

I am a graphic designer/photographer so there was no way I could live with IR

IR is not normal don't let them tell you other wise.

Good luck to all that have to go through this nightmare.

P.S. What a stressful and waste of two weeks with this issue.

I still love Apple but will think twice before I buy 1st generation hardware.

As an owner of the 2nd ed. rMBP 15" with LG SJA2 panel with no IR but eye-strain, I saw Jajaba's helpful posts about calibration and jumped in mentioning the issue, which together with IR seems mostly LG related. You are right suggesting keeping it on-topic, but a post with over 500 pages, will get off-topic sometimes. Anyway I am more responsible for this 'hijacking' than Jajaba, who tried to help me.

Well, I'm back to this thread.

I have a 2.7 GHz/16 GB/256 GB BTO (Week 35) I ordered at the end of August.

It had an LG-manufactured screen (SJA1) that had amazing color depth and neutral whites. Identical photos displayed on my Mid 2010 iMac and the MacBook Pro's screen were much more vivid on the laptop.

However, it developed severe IR by December, at which point after much fuss at the "genius" bar I had the screen replaced (#661-7171), and got a Samsung-made screen.

That screen had multiple noticeable uniformity issues, a faded yellow spot, and a dirty brown-yellow bottom left corner. The colors also popped out much less (most likely the abysmal black level causing this) and this time were more washed out compared to my 27" iMac's LG screen.

I just got the display replaced AGAIN three days ago in the hope of receiving a higher quality one. I did; it was much more uniform, only one barely noticeable yellow spot, and a dirty brown area in the corner so faint it doesn't really matter. However, the colors were STILL the same (i.e. washed out).

I then went to the floor model, and identified the screen. Interestingly, it was a SAMSUNG, which in December had been an LG.

Anyway, I compared the colors on my replacement display and the floor model's, and the store's laptop had noticeably better color reproduction and a slightly better black level (it was hard to tell with the glare).

I showed a store employee, and while he acknowledged the difference, he professed that his preference was my screen, and then further told me there's glue in the laminate which will wear away (not true, didn't happen with the first screen replacement). While I plan to calibrate, what I'm worried is that this screen won't calibrate as well as an LG or a higher-quality Samsung like the one in the store.

What I really want is an LG (SJA2), because there aren't any reports stating it has IR. I'm convinced no one with that panel will develop IR; LG wouldn't revise the panel number otherwise. It's the best combination of the SJA1 LG and the Samsung (best color and uniformity with no IR).

However, there's no way to get a replacement LG SJA2, which bugs me. The only way to obtain the LG revision is purchasing a 2013 rMBP, and obviously Apple will not refund my laptop so I can get a 2013 model.

(There has been one person with an SJA2 in this thread who claimed they had image persistence, but only after using AirPlay Mirroring. That makes me think they're confusing IR with a software graphical glitch.)

If there's any way I can replace my laptop with a 2013 one just to get the new LG panel, I'd even go with the 2013 i7-3740QM @ 2.7 GHz.

Even though it's slightly worse than my current BTO i7-3820QM @ 2.7 GHz (6MB cache vs. 8MB) and costs less, I'd agree to it and get less for my money just so I could get the SJA2 LG panel.

You'd probably have to eBay it and buy a new one.

Somebody in here reported IR with an SJA-2 panel about five or six pages back.  Though that appears to be a singular case at this point.  I had the SJA-2 briefly but returned it because I could see a permanent (not IR) vertical and horizontal line very faintly.   I ended up keeping my original Samsung with the cloudy gray splotches since they appear to be the lesser evil.

Hey all, I started following this when I first decided to buy the pro retina. My first one had IR out of the box and I shipped back. Second one was an LG but no IR . . . . this was until about 5-6 months later. It is absolutely horrible now!

I want to get the screen replaced at the store as many of you have talked about. What is the best way to get that done? I also have the Apple Care plan in addition to the normal warranty.

Right, but on eBay/Amazon I wouldn't even come close to selling the machine for 90% of the cost I bought it for, so selling my 2012 wouldn't cover buying a new one to get that SJA2 panel.

Where did you see someone post about IR with the revised LG screen?

I'm sure I wouldn't be able to calibrate a "dirtier" Samsung screen to look like at least an uncalibrated higher quality, more vivid Samsung.

I bought my laptop in July 2012 and noticed IR about 4 months later. I am not quite sure whether the revised LG SJA2 won't develop IR in a few months, and prefer not go with the Samsung panels because of their other issues (tint problem, etc) . Now I wonder if it would be a good idea to extend my warranty with Applecare and just wait another year hoping that LG would come with a revised SJA3 with no IR issue at all. What do you guys think about this idea?

Been At Brent Cross Apple Store They Kindly Run Their Test But they dont let us  see whats going on while test running ,anyway as soon as I've notice the Black Screen I've open the Lit and seen that Retention Even On Black wallpaper !

"Genius" warned me; "sorry test is not finished yet We have to wait another minute to clear that Retention On the screen"

Voila You have a Perfect screen with Image Retention  "clears" within 1 minute, its in specs so no Replacement

Got my laptop back from Apple care and its LSN!!! WOOT! problem solved. I hope it goes well for you guys too.

I have a mid-2012 MBPr with LG screen (SJA1). Ran the IR test and can see retention after 1 min with screen at the brightest level. My questions are:

1. IR issue hasn't affected my normal use of the machine and it seems that at least in my case it has stopped getting worse more or less at the 1 min mark. Should I ask for an exchange?

2. I bought mine in February 2013. If the answer to the first question is in the affirmative, is it better to wait till the end of the 2013 and ask for an exchange when presumably all the defective MBPr would be cleared off the shelves?

3. Is it possible, according to your past experience with Apple's products, that I would still be getting a MBPr with a LG SJA1 screen if I exchange it at the end of 2013? If so, how likely would it be?

4. Is it possible to get a US keyboard if I exchange mine in France (where I currently live)?

5. If not, how long would it normaly take for me to get a new machine if I exchange my machine in an Apple Store in England (where the keyborad layout is similar to the US's)?

Took in my macbook pro which had LG SJA1 in before the 15 day policy and exchanged it for a new one.  I now have the LG SJA2.  No IR.
