Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Oh man, looks like I have the burn-in issue too =(

I should probably go to the AppleCare Center to get it fixed...but I need my laptop for photo editing work (the irony i know, best screen for photography suffers from burn in)

Lately I've been having loads of bad luck with Apple displays, the last Macbook Air that I purchased had a yellowish LG display too! I got so irritated with it, I gave it to my cousin's kid to use.

The thing is, "most people" don't notice these issues...but to me its glaringly obvious! That's why I bought Mac in the first place, since their attention to detail always saved the day.

But that attention is slowly fading...and so will my brand loyality if this continues.

I guess it takes someone like Jobs to put his foot down and say: "No. We're not going to accept this crap."

But he's not around anymore, RIP Steve Jobs, we miss you.

Sorry but Jobs would have had Tim Cook handle the issue.  He was the one in charge of manufacturing and the vendor supply chain.

Hmm, hope it gets fixed then. I've been plagued by buggy LG displays twice now.

The other gripe I've been having is that the aluminium on my 15.6 seems a lot less durable than it was back when I had a 13.3 MBP with a Core2Duo.

I've wondered to myself quite a few times if the new aluminium is a softer grade...since the old laptop was almost indestructable, no scratches or dings for 2 years until I sold it off. On the new retina, I've had 2 dings on the first day of use itself - so am extra careful when I bring it around now.

Now you made me decide if I should wait until June for a MacBook Pro. Now I know that I should wait because I do not want a ghosting problem because I am buying refurbished and don't know if they have the same replacement policy with refurbished models. Thanks!

Well that's the thing with innovation - it's flawed in itself by definition when novelty is created out of novelty. If you need a mac one, get one, the next generation will be as better as that one was compared to the previous one :^)

Are you buying new or refurbished?

my new one is also somewhat creaking though not notcable with the clear case on as much but i think i will still take it in to have them tighten the screws or whatever it is they can do to stop the creaking.

mine seems to be from both sides, and for some reason this one seems a lot more "flexable" near the palm rest area and the bottom side near the palm rest are compared to the other ones. i actually thought i cracked the laptop by resting my hand on it the first time!

does anyone from apple even ever take a look at these forums to see what the customers are complaining about?

Mine creaks too. I think its because the bottom plate is really really thin...something's got to give when you make a product thinner and thinner. My old 13.3 MBP started to creak after about a year, but it was quite thick.

Also I've found that using those macbook shells can cause damage if you put them on and take them off too frequently - the aluminium gets flexed and...yes then the creakiness starts.

Just be sure when you stuff it in a bag, you don't sit on it!

Maybe they should spend some of that 379 billion into researching how to make carbon fibre bodies like Vaio did...sadly not even Vaio makes carbon fibre laptops anymore.

    Issues I've experienced:

    1. Ghosting issue, somehow getting more and more obvious...gotta take it to service soon. (LG display)

    2. Creaking keyboard, palm rest (same as 3)

    3. Soft aluminium gets dinged and scratched easily (probably using softer grade...5000 series?)

    4. Runs a little hotter than a Core2Duo (fixed with smcfancontrol)

But I must say that it is overall still an awesome laptop, very zippy, nice display, vibrant colors, good design. Still beats mostly everything else on the market. The issues 2-4 are tolerable if you're careful. Issue 1 is getting intolerable for me.

Somebody about a couple hundred pages back discussed that what happens is that ions from the glass or whatever are slowly travelling and migrating into the actual LCD material.  This happens over a period of time, and it's these ions that hold an electrical charge for too long and cause the LCD to retain images.  I guess that's why it gets worse over time.  It all sounds like voodoo to me, but at least it kind of tricked me into feeling like I understand why it gets worse over time.  I guess the LCD material is slowly getting polluted by ions.

Maybe they can make a Star Trek episode about this... a civilization of LCD panels slowly dying due to an attack of ionic aliens.  Sigh.  Whatever!

Do you remember those old CRT monitors that needed "degaussing?" this problem sounds similar, but of a more electrical nature rather than magnetic.

I still applaud what they did with the retina display though.

My friend studied a module on lcd technology, and he says its no walk in the park. You could spend your entire life learning how to build displays, and I believe there are still only a few people in this world who understand it fully - which kinda explains why Samsung is still the display leader, and others haven't really caught up.

My 2012 Week 35 (August) Macbook Retina started having image retention around January.  By March it was showing IR after only 90 seconds, so I took it to the Syracuse Apple store where they ran the lid-down test that turns the backlight way down.  Of course, I couldn't see any IR because the whole screen was black, but I demonstrated IR by simply opening a Terminal window with a gray background and setting it to full-screen, so that I could read the ghost of the menu bar after just 90 seconds.

They replaced the panel with a very nice Samsung that seems to have a narrower vertical viewing angle and a warmer white but no defects.  They took care of the creaking issue too.  The Genius  said that it was caused by debris.  I have no idea, but it was no big deal for them to fix the creaking, and I'd rather not have taken a chance with their being metal bits or loose parts in there.  If you can stand a trip to the mall, I suggest you give them a chance to make it right.
