Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

An "Early 2013" refresh of that rMBP was introduced in February with a CPU speed bump and who knows what else under the hood. So that looks like a leftover of the earlier model. Are you getting a good price for it?

And if there has been an improvement in the display, it's more likely that it would appear in the newer version.

So, as far as you know there was no display problem with "Early 2013" models.

I'm getting 13" base model in Europe for 1499euro. That's much more then US prices, but I live in EU so I have no choise.

I have no idea if the newer models are free of display problems at least partially because sometimes it takes a while for the problems to appear and the refreshed rMBP's haven't been out that long. Moreover, while the newer ones appear to have mostly the newer version of the LG displays, I don't believe the terminal command which can show what kind of monitor is installed will work on the 13" rMBP (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I think all of us with newer rMBPs are just keeping our fingers crossed.

Well, I guess since your sample is more than one and it's the new version, crossing fingers won't work. It's odd that the 13" seems to be more prone to this problem than the 15". I'm using a new 15" with the newer LG display and have run that checkerboard test many time in variety of combinations so far without issue. That doesn't mean it won't turn up eventually.

But I will say that while the tests have so far been negative, I've never run them at full brightness and don't intend to since that's not how I use the machine. Now I wonder if that's a variable which hasn't been recognized since while common (considering the length of this thread), I don't think it's happening to every rMBP owner, and that may be the reason why.

Anyone here who keeps the brightness well down and still is getting the image problem?

Just adding another 2¢ worth here:

I don't believe the backlight can have an affect on the physical cause of IR. But, it might affect the ability of the user to detect it.

Me and my workfriend just both received our MBPr 15" refurbished today. Both of us received Samsung panel without any sign of IR. Both spotless. My lucky friend also received a 16Gig RAM even if the refurbish list a 8Gig base model.

I have returned a brand new MBPr with LG display couple of months ago. Now this one is a keeper.

    Try it:

Thanks! I wanted a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display and thought they were too much money and also heard about IR problems and then you posted about refurbished and now I can buy it for $1,269.

I obtained display replacemente in november for IR (rMBP 15 Lg first series). I obtained a samsung, but I'm not very happy because half screen and in particular right low angle show a yellowish dominant. I hope this issue is suitable for replacement.

When do you think they will start to use LG sJA2 as replacemente?Has someone just received an sja2 as replacement? Because in my opinion, Lg offers better color, more contrast and deeper black, but I don't want to receive another screen with IR. So I'm waiting, hoping the quality of the screens became better.

For greater peace of mind I proceeded to buy apple care protection.

    Hi,

I bought a custom rMBP 2.3 with the upgraded 16gb ram and AppleCare back in June 2012. I noticed the ghosting a few months ago (I've been using an external display as my main monitor so didn't notice it at first).

The ghosting is pretty bad and similar to the photos and videos others have posted online. I've so far spoken to two different Apple reps on the phone, and both are denying its a problem. I've sent them photos of the problem, but I've had no email or acknowledgement, so I'm assuming they're ignoring me now.

I'll try ringing again as getting to an Apple Store is too far. I'm very disappointed with both this so called top of the line expensive professional machine, and also Apples inability to acknowledge and rectify the problem. I've paid extra for AppleCare, which seems utterly pointless if they don't think a faulty screen is worth sorting.

I'm glad some of you have had replacements, I hope I can get one too...

Wow that is bad to still ear that !!

Seriously, 500+ page thread here, plus numerous reported articles all over the web and a lawsuit again Apple for this particular LG / IR problem.

Just ask gently and clearly for serious after sale support. Ask to get to Customer relation department if they are not replying to your e-mail. You will get answer at this department.

Thanks for the repy! I'll certainly try that.

A few years ago, I thought Apples customer service was excellent, but I'm now very disappointed with them. I've owned several macs, iPhones and now an ipad, but this is certainly making me question whether this could be last Mac if this is how they treat their customers.

I wished I bought an imac but they apparently suffer the same issue too...

I think that apple must guarantte the same quality to everyone: the display must be a ips, like declarated on the specification and in apple site.the solution is that everyone mast receive an ips display whitout issues, like the actual version of lg the the  sja2. This only display that has the specifical that the were promised and declared for the retina.
