Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I'm satisfied: I just got my rMBP back from repair. The LG screen was ghosting, just noticed after using Illustrator, which has a dark grey background. I left the laptop at the store on Saturday morning and  picked it up Wedsday afternoon, and it looks great. The repair would have been $600+ out of warrantee. The genius was very nice, did the checkerboard test, and no argument. +1 for Apple on this one for me.

What display did they give you? Samsung or LG?

Samsung, and it has good color, just like the LG did, not yellowish or anything.

I'm glad to hear yours failed the test and they did the work for you. What I find crazy is that based on you description, it sounds like mine was WAY farther gone then yours by the time I took it in and they said mine passed the test. Thanks to a nice and helpful store manager, mine was still fixed and I LOVE the new display (Samsung).

It took 3 days for my repair (which included ordering the part), and everything looked great when I picked it up.

Nice to hear. I'm hoping I can hold onto my macbook(since it's my primary work computer) and have it replaced over a weekend.

HAs anybody been able to do that? Also, can you request a Samsung replacement?

I dropped off mine at lunch on a Thursday and they left me a voicemail on Sunday that it was done. (they had told me it would take me 7-10 days).

I tried the Samsung question, but with them already being doubters, that didn't go over well for me. I don't think they have control over that anyway though. I did get a Samsung (this was just last week, picked up this Monday).

No way to request LG vs Samsung.  In my case they only had one display in stock, so that's what I got.  Unfortunately it was another LG with IR. It's like nothing changed.

All I was saying is there's no evidence to support the fact that they do have image retention. Yet, there's no evidence LG revision 2 panels can't develop image persistence.

Like I said, there's no definitive conclusion.

I do (as do 95% of everyone else here) believe all SJA1s have IR, having personally had one on my Week 35 Mid 2012 (now on my second Samsung screen replacement, with subpar colors albeit).

This is a totally contrived test with the color and time chosen specifically for Apple to get it's desired result.

What bugs me most about the grey they've chosen is that it's darker than the grey that dominates their own apps (i.e. iPhoto, Garage Band, etc).

He's seeing the same thing we are. IR. However, I do concede, and I'm hopeful, that it's possible the SJA2's may have greatly reduced the image retention problem (manufacturing improvements?), but only time will tell. I'm pretty sure that it's safe to say that SJA2's are not completely immune though. 

dark grey is where IR is most visible. I doubt they're obfuscating with the test. My experience was honest and they did the right thing.

I hope so too; right now I'm stuck with this (second replacement) Samsung display with quite abysmal (compared to an iMac 27" and my old LG panel) black levels.

Colors in general are all less vibrant than my iMac and my LG screen. Blues are also slightly tinged purple, and calibrating only subtracts color, meaning post-calibration blues don't contain purple tints but are subdued and washed out to reduce the purple.

Obviously the calibrator can't add the ability for the screen to reproduce blue hues more accurately, so it can only subtract the purple.

So I'd actually rather get an SJA2, hoping it has the perfect combination of the Samsung's lack of image persistence and LG's superior color reproduction. And then, with the slim chance that it indeed does develop IR, I would simply go exchange it for a Samsung and try to live with the colors.

Here's the grey that Apple uses in it's IR test...

Here's the grey that many OSX apps use for their backgrounds (it's also the grey that many of us used to diagnose the IR problem in the first place)...

So, for those of you experiencing IR, try something for me...

Download and save these 2 images on your computer and then open them both in two separate Preview windows.

Then, leave a checker board image (or any high-contrast image with a consistent pattern) on your entire screen for 10 or 15 minutes.

Finally, close the checkerboard image and drag the 2 grey squares (in their separate instances of preview) over the screen.

Which one shows the retained high-contrast pattern better, the darker grey square or the lighter grey square?

I'd be interested to hear about your results.

I have an appointment at an apple store to address this issue I'm having with IR(it has progressively become worse). Do they just run their test(which uses a black background) or will they accept any other demostartion of the problem?
