Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

They weren't interested in my example of IR, they just ran the checkerboard test for 4 min. and it failed, and the genius didn't say there was any question about it failing. The test was very clear showing the IR.

That's my concern. The checkerboard test goes to a black that really doesn't show what's happening. Of course, once you very the grey desktop background(which is more likely the values I work with daily) after the test, it becomes very apparent that there is IR-and it only seems to be getting worse.

Im bringing my macbook PRO (late 2012) to the apple store monday (I've made an appointment) 'cause of the same problem, some bright spots (2) have appeared in my screen. I don't know when but it's a LG display and I often use external display + APPLE TV with it (is that the root cause of the problem)?

I hope they can fix it with a better version of the display (fingers crossed, please give me a Samsung).

They promissed me to fix within 5 days and they should keep the promess as in 8 days Im going back to my country (where we don't have Apple Store).

Hi AldenP,

Your IR was so bad that it even failed Apple's contrived IR test, so in a way you're lucky it was as bad as it was. However, many customers, whose IR is still clearly unacceptable, pass Apple's IR test.

I think they took a big sampling off of the production line, checked them for IR, and then devised parameters that would allow a high percentage (80%?) to pass. You were likely in the lower percentage (20%?) whose IR was so bad it wouldn't even pass their unreasonable limits.

That's what I think anyway.

I brought my macbook in today at the apple store in Glendale, showed the genius my issue and was able to schedule a day to drop off my Mac to get repaired(I had a deadline for a project due this weekend, so I couldn't leave it today).

The genius seemed aware of the issue and said a few other of the staff had come across it.

Hopefully the replacement will be without any issues.

I just bought a brand new 15" Macbook Pro Retina from B&H a on May 29, 2013  and I'm starting to notice how ridiculously bad this ghosting issue is.  It is completely unaccetable for my first Mac.  If I wanted a crappy machine I would have gone with Windows 8.

Where do you find out what type of display you have? I checked my settings and it's blank for Device Manufacturer and Device Model.  I'm running OS X 10.8.4 and it says it is Mid 2012, even though bought it two weeks ago.

I did have an LG with image retention issued and went to genius they order me a new display with part # 661-7171 and it was a Samsung now I'm happy with my laptop . Don't accept the crappy LG display get it replaced, you paid a premium price for your laptop.

If you can get a refund on that, I'd suggest doing it pronto. They sold you a leftover from the original version of the rMBP. The second generation was released in February of this year. Although it doesn't appear to be 100% consistent, a newer version of the LG display was used in the 2013 version along with the Samsungs. Was the rMBP presented to you as the newest model?

After much debate and months and months of anxiously awaiting to buy a new computer I have finally decided that I will still continue to wait! hah.

I almost talked myself into the new 13" air that just came out but I am wanting to accomplish two things. First off I am a business owner and a full time student...I have two MacBook Pro's (a 13" and 17"). The 13" I use exclusively for school only and the 17" I use exclusively for work. I love the screen size on my 17" of course but most of the time I usually have both of them plugged into an external display except for when I am at school of course.

Since the new retina display model has come out the 15" weighs less than my current 13" does (if I remember correctly...or it's almost the exact same....been awhile since I looked at the specs). And my 17" doesn't really move off my desk much but I do take it home once in awhile.

So I figured well hey I'm lugging this 13" around anyway and the 15" will give me a bigger display over the 13" but smaller over my 17" and the weight is about equal to the 13" and thus just retire my 17" and 13" and stick with one 15" that I take everywhere and then I'd have all my work and school on it. But to my chagrin it sounds like the retina's are still even today brand new a problem with various things here and there....although I have seen some post saying it's the best lappy they've ever owned even with the ghosting issues and such. Ahh but I think I'll just keep hoping that "late 2013" brings the upgrades to the 2013 with a newer model and something with the display changed.

So for now I'll just sit back and wait again as I have been doing since the first rMBP came out. I just have such an itch to buy a new one though it's getting hard...the new air just about made me pull the trigger but I think if I had it'd just replace my 13" for school and I don't really see the advantage of that for now.

I hope everyone gets a good display and computer sometime for those who are currently suffering...I feel for you.

@matrixfinity - Thank you for the code.  That worked.  Here is what returned LP154WT1-SJA1.  I agree that I should not have to put up with inferior monitor.

Can I still take my Mac to the Genius Bar at the Mac Store even though I bought it from B&H?  I'm feeling really glad I opted for the AppleCare.

@krnorth - Your post seems very well thought out  -- although I wondered what tasks do you actually use the computer for? Are you running spreadsheets or making music?  Is your desire for a new, third laptop because you want the high quality display?

What would you think about getting a retina iPad? Or maybe an iMac?

Instead of old and new, let's call them current and "last year's model." The current rMBP part numbers are ME664LL/A for the 2.4 GHz model and ME665LL/A for the 2.7GHz model.

What you bought is new in the sense that's it's fresh out of the box and unused, but it's been superseded by a newer version. Normally, that wouldn't be a big deal if the price was right and it was clear what you were buying. But the issue with the monitor seems to be  bothering a lot of people and the LG monitors used in the 2012 models appear to be all "SJA1." At least most of the 2013 rMBP 15" which have LG monitors are SJA2's, and while there's "disagreement" about whether they've been fixed or are simply too new to act up yet, there are few complaints that I've seen about them so far (since that group includes me, I'm watching closely).

There were also issues with the USB 3.0 ports which appear to have been fixed on the 2013 version. So the current version seems to be more than just the "speed bump" the press described.

You can bring it to genius if you still under warranty and they will replace it or else pay the $700 for a new lcd XD.

Well, my work computer and school computer both run Parallels because I unfortunately need Outlook for Windows not Mac...as MAC Outlook does not support the CRM integration.

For my work I also have to run 20-20 design software which is Windows as well. I also run AutoCad on Windows because the Mac version of AutoCad is stagnant compared to the Windows version...very troublesome to use for some reason. So basically that's all I use the windows side for.

On my school computer I have some software for classes that Windows of course is required (not often but occasionally).

Outside of Windows....

I use my work computer to do spreadsheets, estimates, and word processing. I also do graphic design with Illustrator & Photoshop for things we need for work.

On my school computer I basically just use it to complete school work online and use word processing and excel and such. I don't need a whole lot for the most part with my school computer.

I have upgraded both my my MBP's to 8gb ram and SSD's as well, and it was like getting a whole new computer!

I've thought many times about getting an iMac but then it wouldn't be mobile. And I am not sure if I said it correctly in my original post but I don't essentially want a third laptop per-say I just want to sell my 13" and my 17" and then go to a 15" retina because the weight is basically equivalent to my 13" now and less than my 17". I can manage with a 15" for sure because I usually am hooked up externally. So my goal was to upgrade to a better computer than what I have now (just because I want to I guess, both my machines work and run great can't say I lag any power for anything I do). But...consolidate to 1 machine instead of 2.

I have a third generation iPad and have had since it came out...and honestly it's a tedious bugger to use to be productive. I just am not comfortable on them...but playing games on them sure is fun! LOL. I'm considering abandoning the iPad altogether though...don't really use it a whole bunch other than to play games and browse the web here and there....I do have the verzion on it so it has been great for Internet when I needed it.
