MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

    Thanks!  I'll try calling them for the first time tomorrow.  I was going to stop in to an apple store in MA while visiting, but it just wasn't the most convient timing.  I wish I would have just done it.  And I'm with you, I really don't see a screen replacement being 600-900$ as the other poster suggested.  My last MBP was quoted at a $300 screen replacement from a third party company.  And it was obviously much older (even at the time I was looking into it).

    Yes, I am indeed within my 2weeks NQA return period. the problem is I am going to travel for 20 days and I would be out of the window and moreover I don't wanna use it for 20 days and have loads of works on it, back them up send it for replacement and HOOOOOPE that I get a flawless display.
    I am off to Apple Store tomorrow morning, however, I don't think the display is gonna fail the test since it is brand new and still far away from failing that test.

    I am going to the store to either sort it out or send this absolute disgrace back and get a full refund. Never gonna buy another mac nor suggest it to anyone unless I have conclusive proof that this QA issue is fixed.

    Knew I had the LG display and significant image retention since my original MBP 15" Retina purchase in October 2012, but ignored it until recently. After reading some recent articles, I ran the IR test and determined that it was pretty serious. So, I decided to take my machine to the Apple Store at Natck Collection in MA on Sunday. I expalined the issue calmy to a Genius. He took the machine out back to run his IR test. When he returned, he confirmed the issue and announced that he had a replacement display in stock and if I could leave the machine, they would do the repair within a couple of days, all for free under warranty. I confirmed that the available replacement display was, indeed, a Samsung unit. I opted out of the immediate repair, but asked him to set the part aside for me. I took the machine home and ran a complete time machine backup, and brought the machine back to the store on Monday.

     

    Got the machine back on Wednesday afternoon. Turned it on, and immediately saw the yellowish cast, but also confirmed no significant IR. After a littlee forum-scanning, I decided to 'cool' the display profile, and I am now looking at a screen that seems to render whites in a perfectly acceptable manner.

     

    This is my first Apple product after decades as a 100% PC/Windows guy, and have to say I am happy with the whole end-to-end experience with Apple. I hope all of you end up with an equally satisfying Apple support experience.

     

    By the way, as I approached the Apple Store for each of my visits, I passed the new Microsoft Store. While the Apple Store was consistently packed and brimming with energy and activity, the Microsoft Store was always empty or nearly empty. But, I guess I that wouldn't be considered news on this forum!

    Yeah, I was in the Apple store on Wednesday night and saw something similar. The Apple store was jam packed, the Samsung store had about 1/4 of the people in it, and the Sony store was empty.

    My story:

     

    Bought a 15" Retina MacBook Pro in summer 2012. Display was a nice cool blue. I didn't check the manufacturer. It started developing white spots months later. I never noticed image retention on it. Brought it in to the Apple Store for the white spots. The display was replaced. The replacement display is Samsung (

    154YL01001) and it has a horrendous yellow tint. I brought it back to the Apple Store and the clerk agreed it was more yellow but refused to replace it.

     

    Has anyone tried or succeeded in getting their yellow Samsung displays replaced?

    If yellow is not even on whole screen or its yellow and some parts of the sreen are even more yellow they should replace it.

    You don't need a replacement. You just need to apply a new calibration profile to the new display. Follow instructions elsewhere in this thread to create a new calibration profile for the new display. Select the "Advanced" option. When you get to the end of the calibration process, you will have the option to adjust color balance. This is your moment! Make it as un-yellow as you want. When complete, enjoy your IR-free computer and move on to more important things.

     

    You can also use a real display calibration kit to get it exactly where it should be, taking into account the equipment and your local lighting environment.

    I replaced my lg-sja2 screen yesterday with a samsung one. checking the display with another samsung one on my 2012 rmbp, the 2012 is significantly cooler than this new one.

    However, the warmer one gives me less eye strain. I am going to calibrate both with spyder by next week.

    After 45 minutes of arguing with the store manager, who says he is not a lawyer, II got the price lowered to $310 if they sent it out instead of doing it at the Gct store, I gave in and took that deal. The manager specifically said that lowering the price from $700 was not admission that the product was defective. I picked it up yesterday. The replacement is a Samsung. Amazing how all the shipped units appear to be LG and all the replacements appear to be Samsung. I may be wrong, but I think Apple figures that you paid so much for the computer in the first place, what is $319 more to make it right. It is less than 10% right. All in all a horrible experience.

    It's not too amazing. I'm an electronics engineer, formerly in manufacturing, and back in September I suggested to one of Apple's corporate relations people that, if they only had a limited number of Samsung panels, from a purely short-term business stand-point, it would make sense for them to set aside all of the Samsung panels for repairs only. The idea being that most people likely wouldn't notice the image retention and it would be a way to placate the few customers that did complain. However, I also suggested that this was only to temporarily avoid bad press and to buy them time until they were able to actually fix the problem and issue a recall on the LG-carrying rMBPs. Obviously, only the first part of my suggestion was followed.

    You were out-of-warranty though, correct? I mean, that's no excuse for the image retention issue, which, in my mind, should have resulted in a recall, but legally speaking, Apple wasn't really required to fix it for free. Morally speaking is another matter.

    Apple sold defective product. I belive that they are fully aware of that at this point. It is like a car company selling a care with bad breaks. I dont think a waranty limits their liability. But we can now wait to see the result of the class action lawsuit that has been filed over this issue.

     

    The bottom line is my advice to anyone with an LG screen is to have (just the screen replaced, especially if what Canuck1970 is true) and you should have it replaced ASAP. If you replace the whole machine you will most likely get another LG screen and have the same problem all over again. I can attest to the fact that this problem does get worse over time. I believe that is why the people who recognized the issue early on sometimes passed  Apple's 3 minute test. Mine failed. the pass fail is not done by visual inspection, it is actually part of the test. From posts in this forum, the issue has not been corected in the second version of the LG screens SJA2. Apple is doing a dance, replacing those that are under warranty if they fail the Apple 3 minute test. It may take more than a year for the IR to be noticeable or get bad enough to fail Apple's 3 minute test. Then you will be stuck paying between $700 and $310 depending on how much you argue and the whim of the store manager to have this fixed. I don't believe that Apple will do anything like a recall unless they are forced.
