Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I've been following this helpful thread and am considering exchanging my cMBP 15 for the Retina 15 (a tough call given that the cMBP has no glitches).  I came across some interesting info I thought worth sharing.

First, I've been looking at open box 15 rMBPs in nearby Best Buys and have been permitted to load the computer and check the screen type on two units at two different Best Buys.  Both have LP-SJA2 panels (sigh, hoping for a Samsung).  More interestingly, I got to talking to one of the floor guys who told me he worked for Apple for a number of years and just recently had stopped working for them (if I recall he had a couple of jobs with them, one in the tech field).  I had no reason to doubt his veracity; he hadn't been the rep working with me, he wouldn't get commission (none of them do), and he wouldn't even get credit for the sale (like an hours bump) since he knew that I had primarily been working with another rep; moreover it would be an exchange so the store wouldn't make much money off it anyway.

--Anyway, he knew about the image retention issue and told me they had fixed it with the 2nd Generation (read: 2013) model.  He said it was a production problem and they are now producing them all in America whereas this formerly wasn't the case.  Moreover, I was talking to him about the 13 rMBP and how I had had eye trouble with it (I think it was just an adjustment thing on my part), but he mentioned that at one point they had an acknowledged display problem with the 13 -- something about how it would go in and out of focus in some way.  This was in 2012 and he said Apple fixed the issue.  Now obviously this is just a testimonial account, but like I said, he seemed down to earth and credible.  If true, one good thing to take away is that Apple is well aware of these issues and taking steps to amend them at the production level.  It may be that the LG - SJA2s can still have image retention, as some have reported here, but that the probability of it happening is much lower given production changes.--One more thing, I spoke to a rep at an Apple Store about this issue, and she knew about the IR and had actually experienced it moderately on her own 15 Retina.  She also thought it was more a problem on the 1st generation (hers was a first generation).--Just some data I thought would be helpful for those of us concerned with this issue.

I don't think you have followed this thread carefully at all. This problem has neither been fixed, acknowledged or resolved by Apple. All of the LG screens have IR to some degree and it usually gets worse over time. Your comments make me wonder if it is you that works for Apple as everything you posted is disinformation.

Nope, no yellowing on this one, text looks extremley sharp, more so I would say than the LG. I'm going to run a screen calobration (x-rite i1Display Pro) and let you guys know my thoughts in the next few days.

I know you've had one of the worst experiences and trust me I wouldn't want to go through anything like you did, which is why I'm researching and asking questions.(!)  I'm with you that there's clearly a problem that needs to be fixed and that the LG panel plays some role in the problem.  My point is that, assuming the fellow I spoke to wasn't lying, Apple has acknowledged the problem at an internal level and made steps to fix it, steps they deem to have been successful (again they could be wrong about it being actually successful or could have an bad standard for what counts as successful).  And what the fellow told me about attempts to fix is corraborated by a report on 9to5 Mac here.  You say "all of the LG screens have IR to some degree" but honestly I don't see how anyone here could know that to be true.  We can say that some do, and perhaps many of the SJA1's do, but we also have LG user reports on the web to the contrary, not to mention the fact that we lack tons of data since the percentage of users who post in forums is low.  Again, if I had a choice I'd definitely get the Samsung.  It could well be that all the LG panels have a predisposition, as it were, to develop IR, but that the predisposition will only be actualized if other production variables are in place, production variables that could be improved.  I'm not sure, but I found what I heard from the fellow important and worth passing along to this community.

Which store did you get it replaced? (I assume you live in the UK). I have an appointment next week in London's Regent Street Store and I hope I get a non-yellowish Samsung (or that at least gets fixed with the calibration profile)...

Hi guys. I've had my Mac Book Pro Retina 15" for almost a year now (october 2012) and I've just recently decided to send it to Apple due to ghosting problems on my screen. After about 10 days, the laptop has just gotten back, but they told me they replaced the MoBo instead of the screen because the problems, according to their tests, lies there. Is it plausible or am I just being tricked? Are there any instances of the same thing (i.e. the replacement of the motherboard instead of the screen)? How did your screen behave after that?

    Thank you,

    Marco

Did they fix the problem? Isn't that why you sent them your machine?

I have yet to go to the Apple Store to get it back, so I don't really know (I live around 50km from the nearest Apple Store). I smelled something funny about the behaviour of the support and wanted to know if there was anyone else who had the same experience.

the issue mentioned here is referred to as image "ghosting" apple does have a support article that tells how to resolve this particular issue. following is the link to that article:

hope this helps those who have been affected by this.
