Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

@JJA1... Both LG and Samsung were having issues with overheating of the display driver chips. I don't know if the problem has been completely solved just yet.

I  have been working with the techs over at LGD here in SK for the last  ~2years and the frustration that the techs have been experiencing  regarding the burnt displays have tken a toll on their display staff and cost LGD and well as Samsung mega $$$$$$$$$$!!.

Partly this is an issue with archaic Korean management style ( management refusal to listen to techs concern over overheating and burn in) and blasting ahead with a "cheaper"/ easier to design retina design for profits sake.

****I'd make sure that you elevate the computer and have it on a laptop cooler when doing graphics work.

I hope the Haswell edition runs cooler and has fewer problems with the displays.

Would that be in any way related to how bright the monitor is set? I'd imagine the brighter it is, the hotter the display gets, and depending on the display's design the "overheating" point could be reached before the maximum brightness setting is.

That's quite interesting info.  Rumor has it that the new rMBPs will have not only a specially produced Haswell chip but also a new Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics (and perhaps no dedicated graphics chip).  It could be that one of Apple's goals is to provide hardware that is better fit to power the Retina displays, perhaps in particular by ensuring that the display driver chips don't get overheated.  It might be a way to deal with what they are being provided by these companies.  It's unfortunate, though, to hear that those companies moved forward with cheaper, easier-to-design displays.--I'm tempted to return my rMBP and wait for these new ones, but it sounds like they won't be coming out until October, and even then we won't know if they've fixed the display problems for awhile (unless Apple explicitly addresses the issue upon their release).

I could not agree with you more, IR does develop over time; I only started to experience IR after 8 months and it's getting worst since, it's now very prominent just after a few seconds and part of my day to day life.

I use my monitor brightness level set to half, and monitor is calibrated regularly.

It also gradually develop a flickering problem, that today shows constante flickering during every operation. Luckly my investment in Apple care will save me from expensive repair.

    Nope.. .not in this case.

The problem was isolated by techs at LGD and Samsung specifically to the amount of heat directed at the driver chips from the main processor and graphics card. The LEDs provide negiliagable heat compared to that of the internals on the rMBP 15.4".

The problem of ghosting takes time to develope and this is directly related to the heating of chips that controll the refresh rate of the sceen, the hotter the chips get the slower the screen refreshes. This allows the image to stick. There is little that can be done after the chips start to degrade other than a complete replacement.

Apple is completely aware of the situation and has been trying to work with both companies to come up with a solution...

I don't see why Samsung's reputation has to be soiled in this thread along with LG's and Apple's when we haven't heard of one Samsung with IR. Nor have we heard from anyone providing any sort of documented proof of what you say about he chips and heat.

We have however heard more than one expert indicating that IR is a production problem. Perhaps LG's production problem. This is why Apple is using Samsung panels to REPAIR rmbp's with LG panels.

There's also NO evidence and no statement on record by anyone who says that Haswell will have any positive effect on IR.

I got a Samsung replacement after an unrelated fault with my old LG. Initially I could not see a difference, but I am quite certain now that the Samsung has a warmer color profile and is perhaps a little bit less bright.

I don't know who you are or who you think you are but that is not even close to true. It has nothing to do with the chips or heating. I like many others had just the panel replaced, nothing else. I went from an LG to a Samsung and the IR immediately was gone. If this was a problem with the chips and heating it would still be there regardless of the panel. It is not, and that has not been the experience of anyone in this forum as far as I can tell. So goodbye Mr. Chips.

I discount anyone who passes themselves off as "working" with Apple, and presents a story that has not been the experience of the majority of the people on this forum. Who are nothing more than average Joes who bought a defective product. I also discount people who use all caps and bold fonts, they are trying too hard to make their point. After your post, I looked it appears to me that conorfromvictoria passes him self off as an expert "working" with Apple or a company connected with Apple in almost every post. I saw one post where he worked for a battery supplier, now he is an expert on screens. I posted to share my experience which corresponds to about 90% of the postings in this forum. Most of those postings do not state anything about the career or expertise of the poster.

Furthermore, anyone working for Apple or any of its suppliers in any capacity, employee, contractor, advisor, or otherwise would be putting their job, possibly their career, and maybe more in jeopardy as they would most certainly have signed a Non Disclosure Agreement as is common practice in many industries. Even if he had not signed an NDA, I am sure there are company policies against making unapproved statements.

I hope that this forum continues to be useful, but I have better things to do so I will disengage.

    Average Joe.

I have 665 with LG. Nowadays I'm seeing that ghost effect. In service center they tested my monitor for 1 minute to wait for this effect gone! Apple things that 1 minute with this ghost effect is ok! I work with pictures and i thing apple is real **** if they made monitor like this for peoples who work with images. And we are majority in whole. I thing that apple lost all positions in nearest future.

Same issue and for me..intensive IR from my LG (1st gen.) display. Arranged a repair at Apple Store CentrO (Oberhausen, Germany). Excellent support, the guys are aware of the problem, agreed to change my macbook's screen although the IR in the Apple's ghosting test is not so obvious. Got it today, the screen was replaced with a Samsung one (happy ), a bit yellow-warmer compared to LG but with an appropriate colour profile you can adjust it according to your taste. Once again, very happy with the support, it was fixed and returned really quickly. In addition, inside the store I managed to test a macbook with 1st gen. LG display for over half an hour. The result: no IR at all, tried all the dark-grey colours, change backgrounds, static image for 10+ minutes, no sign of ghosting. Propably, not all the LG's appeared to suffer from ghosting. Just happened to be the unlucky ones..

If the system originally came with the Samsung display you have now, not the original LG, and you noticed the "bit yellow-warmer" display within 14 days, do you think you would have kept it or returned it?

Yes, I would have kept it because if I haven't seen and used the LG display, I could not understand it. The eye is getting used to the display quickly. For sure, in my opinion, the best combination is an LG with no IR . But I prefer the little warmer screen instead of having annoying ghosting issues. I also tried different colour profiles that I found online and the screen can be adjusted closer to LG than the factory default.
