Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I've had two laptops with AUO screens, and they were the most absolutely horrid things I've ever laid eyes on.  One of them was on my last machine, a Dell XPS 17, and the anti-glare "coating" that they put on it looked like someone just rubbed the screen down with sandpaper. It was absolutely dismal.

I finally took my rMBP back Sunday evening and swapped it out.  I lucked out and ended up with a Samsung display.  So far so good.  No IR, better color, and brighter screen.

Wishing luck to everyone else with this problem.

    Dear itsamacthing

thanks for the info , I think the screen is truly spectacular in terms of gaming performance and photography

I use DSLR Nikon Camera and honstely the photos on the retina display are nice however still getting screen problems and I think apple should sort it out or recall their first batches.

Having read all this, I'm cancelling my rMBP. Fix this, Apple, fix immediately.

All - got my week 33 / 2.6 / 512 / 16 last night. Fortunatly, it's a Samsung. That being said, i've talked to a few of my friends who recently ordered there's as well (week 32+) and noone has had any IR issues as of yet (andthose that have LG aren't able to reproduce). My unit is absoultuly perfect and this is screen is definitly superb.

Based on this thread (and a few others out there around the world on other sties), I'm getting the sense that the LG's have been remedied and people in the latest shipments aren't really reproducing any sort of IR with either screen. I wouldn't cancel an order quiet yet and take the chances.

Hi oldmaster, glad to hear you love it... I use a Sony DSLR, but thinking about jumping ship to Nikon due to the endless selection of glass...but thats another forum     I'm still trying to work out my MBA purchase due to screen issues.  Once that is resolved, I can start to ready myself for the Retina Lottery.... "Sad days indeed" I remember when buying an Apple was full proof.

I got mine just today and it has quite visible IR. It's enough to leave Google main page for a few mins to see the shapes of the letters, so...no. The problem is not solved and Apple still builds rMBP with crappy LG screens.

I'm coming up to the 2 week mark of having my LG rMBP, and i've had the Dark Grey background on ever since it arrived and have constantly tested for IR.

I have yet to see an IR apart from after leaving it for an hour, where I could just about make out the sides of the window, that was it, and it faded away very quickly.

I guess I must have a good. I'm not going to put my machine through the absolute extreme tests that some of you have mentioned on here as i'm happy that my machine is not broken.

I will stick around here for a few more days, then I shall unsubscribe from this thread and set my nice Mountain Lion background back.

I think this whole issue may be a poor QA issue as there would be thousands more people complaining if it was all LG screens that where bad. Plenty have reported good LG screens and I have seen at least 4 reports of bad Samsung screens.

    Regards.

LG, week of production - 32. Also getting a bit of pink/purple hue and when looking at grey background there is a visible image refreshing. Reminds me of old times, when my standard CRT monitor was workin on 60hz...

Today I went into best buy. Just to look at the retina they had there, ran the script it is a Samsung (mine is an lg with MINIMAL IR that I asked for a replacement and it should be here in a couple days)

Switched to dark grey on the best buy unit and saw no ir HOWEVER I did see very ugly lines that ran horizontal from the window that was open and would follow it . They looked similar to how the IR would look but almost looked like interference. Best buy has a lock plugged into one of the USB ports maybe it's due to that. I unplugged it's power source and that didn't help it. I took pics but I'm on my phone right now. When I get home I will upload the pics. But man it was disconcerting that the Samsung had those lines.  The colors did look better than my lg screen (just as the apple store Samsung screened unit looked better than my lg unit)

Oh, con happen to find a display with a broken line or very defective screen, but this is different to fact that every ,or most of, Lg screen have IR.

This is rare case, equal to find a Mac with a defective fans...

I think is very important the view of some has an Lg screen with IR and now have a Samsung screen, becouse They really know the problem and really see if the new one is without IR.

We can say that the majority of faulty displays are LGs, but to say that the majority of LG displays are faulty is just wrong.

I propose to make a statistic out of it. Just tell manufacturer and week build of you faulty display. We could try and find a constant here.

    I'll start:

Hi everyone again. I just received my brand new advanced replacement rMBP. It's the same configuration of my previous one: 2.7/16gb/512, build week 33, and it came with a Samsung screen! Made my morning just now and I have yet to see IR appearing withing minutes like on my LG one but I will update if I see anything at all wrong with the screen or the laptop itself. It's been around ~15 minutes and Safari leaves no signs of IR on the darkest grey background provided by the stock wallpapers. When I hif the dock there also was no IR. I haven't heard of anyone getting a week 33 and after that isn't Samsung so hopefully you guys will too!

    Hi DJ Coffee,

Would you mind trying out the test I suggested yesterday?

Basically, set your desktop background to solid charcoal gray (the darkest of the 3 solid gray options), open up this checker board pattern...

    Checker Board.jpg

...and blow it up as large as you can on your screen.

Then, wait for about 15 minutes (make sure your MBP doesn't go into screen saver mode) and close the checker board picture.

Please let us know if you can still see the checker board pattern on your Samsung LCD.

    Thanks,

    Peter
