Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thats why you shouldn't use other peoples ICC profiles. It should be calibrated on your specific machine. Because of variances in manufacturing. I only posted it because you asked. But you screen going Purple, proves that the Samsung displays can be calibrated.... Purple is opposite on the Color Spectrum from Yellow.  Meaning you went from Warm to Cool in color temprature. Even though it went too far the other direction, with proper calibration you should be able to find a happy medium in the middle.

I'm sorry if I'm disturbing you but is it possible for you to post a neutral icc profile ?

I'm totally cool if your not able to.

    Thanks a bunch

    Cheers

Yeah, yeah, I can't use your ICC on my display.

Dude I think you are just angry. You do not want to listen to any type of technical explanation or science and are "set in stone" that your display has issues and cannot be fixed.

If people could just share ICC profiles, there would be no need for calibrators. In fact there would be no need for ICC profiles. OEM's would just include ICC profiles for their displays with the screen.

Yuck. Still very purple. I'm not going to buy a colour calibrator. I'm going to keep going to Genius Bars until they replace my display. Until then I'm just going to play with the white point slider. And yeah I am angry.

Regarding the Samsung displays in the Apple stores (and elsewhere) looking so good, do you really think they're not calibrating them? All displays come off the manufacturing line carrying a generic profile that may or may not (likely not) be accurate. They expect you to calibrate it, and if you're a serious photographer, they expect you to use a proper electronic calibration tool. Any store manager with half-a-brain would insist that all of his floor models' displays be calibrated to look as good as possible for the customer, especially when there are several of them opened up side-by-side. Most customers will get their machines home and not notice there color accuracy is off because they have nothing to compare it to.

Marty, I have a Samsung screen (my original rMBP purchased 7/12) that has what I think is good color but a slight yellow tinge on the lower right side of the screen, only noticable on white or light backgrounds. Can calibration fix this?

You can't fix it. You can reduce yellowness by calibrating to cooler white point but inconsistency will always be there. You can try to swap display unit but you can get similar or worse display. Do you have any bad pixels?

No calibration cannot fix this. Sorry, that would be a defective display.

Same issue here... I can notice a yellow tinge in the right bottom area of the screen... Do you think there is any chance of replacement with that? I've been replaced once from a LG display with dead pixels to a Samsung one.

If the issue is severe enough then yes you should be able to get it replaced.

Unfortunately, I think we are stuck with what we got, but I don't want it to happen.

What would you have done, shayster98, if the yellow Samsung display you have now is the display that came with the machine? Would you have returned it within 14 days?

Have you tried visiting the Genius Bar to complain about the yellow display?

I definitely would have returned it, and waited for as long as possible for a revised panel to come out, even if that took years. I have an old 13" I'd have to use for portability, and a 2010 i7-870 iMac for serious performance work. (Still not as great as the rMBP i7-3820QM, unfortunately)

Well, on this Mid 2012 Week 35 from last September so far I've had two screen replacements. The LG panel that came with the machine looked stunning, and contradicted all the reports on this thread at the time that LGs were yellow and washed out compared to Samsungs, which I never understood.

However, it soon developed image retention, and when I could read my mail from the login screen I thought it was time to get a replacement, and, had to fight for it (with the "genius" telling me there are great plugins for Photoshop that move your toolbars around constantly ). But the Samsung that I got in December came with washed out colors and severe yellowing in the bottom left corner. THAT is not calibratable, for obvious reasons. It soon developed dead pixels, so this spring I had to once again change it out.

This one, which I'm still currently stuck with has way less uniformity issues, but it's definitely yellow as well, AND much more washed out than my first Samsung.

Like I said, since I noticed this immediately I compared it to the floor model (also Samsung), and the colors on the store one looked great (noticeably using the Blue Pond wallpaper to compare). I pointed this out to a salesman, but I was told by him and another guy that they could notice it, but that there are manufacturing differences and it's "completely normal." "We can't just keep replacing your screen," he said.

I tried to argue with them but to no avail, so I've been stuck with this screen since spring.
