Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

First I apologize for mentioning this irrelevant information but it is to help each other as this was the goal of this very forum, the 13" MacBook pro haswells to be exact are suffering from some sort of dysfunctional keyboard and trackpad so patience is advised.

Also I wlould like to apologize for an earlier statement I posted that was false, it seems like broadwell is comeng to notebooks Not desktops

    Best of luck

I am based in the UK and have a first gen with lg screen, posted on here before and followed since owning my MBPR 15".

I've had issues from day one with IR, made 3 trips to genius bar, only for them to run the test and tell me it's within spec, although it has got worse over time (since jan 2013) they still keep telling me this. Calls to the support team have been very frustrating, 7 or 8 calls and not once have I managed to get this resolved, the one time I got to speak with higher management about 2 months back I was told that I had more chance of getting compensation from the store I bought it from or the credit card it was purchased on than getting a replacement screen (even under the manufaturers 12 month warranty), then I had an email linking me to the IR Solution page on the apple site..... from that very same manager.

The last call made this week proved more fruitful but will beleive it when I see it, the lady on the phone saw that I had spoken with management staff and could not beleive the response I was given, she has set me up yet another genius bar appointment for this week and passed all notes on the store. Let's see how this one goes, any tips appreciated!

To be honest I am not holding out much hope, IR shows after 1 or 2 minutes and takes longer to dissapear, the dock also had IR ghosting now which never happened before, the test is not really in favour of normal everyday use for me as I used to use my mac for designing and photography. I say 'used to use' as I've actually resorted to not using the machine and use my pc for all work, the most the mac gets used for is the odd movie.... getting my monies worth from a £2,000 machine!

Oh and also out of warranty the end of November but am completely against paying for apple care at £270 over another 2 years if they can't/won't support my problems since purchasing the machine, what trust have they filled me with!!!

Hey twosix79, sorry to hear about your issues they sound very similar to mine when I was trying to get my mid 2012 rMBP sorted. You are better off going to the store itself, this is what I eventually did and they ended up giving me 2 replacement screens.

My advice is to be patient and don't get angry from the start, explain your situation calmly and how you are unhappy about the IR on a machine that cost £2000. I explained that Apple's very marketing on this machine relates to the display and that's the reason I bought one.

The first machine I had was an LG with IR, the first replacement was a samsung with yellow gradient and the third was also a Samsung with yellow gradient. Eventually I went back and asked to speak with a manager, the member of staff I spoke said is it someone I can help with? I politely said no as I have a case open and apparently they have told me I need to speak with the store manager to get the problem resolved.

I explained my issues to the manager and he said I presume you have been asked if you want another screen replacement. I said yes but it was pointless as I know there are issues with these screens, you only have to look on the internet forums to see all the probelms people are having. I eventually said (not thinking in a million years he would agree) that I would like a refund or at least a credit for the machine. Incredibly he agreed to the credit and gave me an Apple gift card with over £2,200 on it.

You have to bear in mind I already had 2 replacement screens at this time so it's highly unlikely you'll be offered credit until you have had at least 2 screens replaced. In my experience they tend to do it very quickly, in fact on both days I took my machine in, the following day it was ready. To clarify, my warranty was due to expire on 22nd November 2013 and I managed to get the credit last Monday.

To be honest I have had to contact Apple on a few occasions with regards to hardware and they have always been incredibly helpful. In my experience I cannot fault them.

Amazing how lazy some people are. Read a few pages and your answers are there.

People. NOTHING HAS CHANGED WITH REGARDS TO IMAGE RETENTION FROM THIS PAST YEAR. Other than Apple has turned off your ability to see if you have an lg or samsung (hmm, now why would they do that?). So stop spinning your wheels here like you're now going to discover something. The screens are still defective. Both 13" and 15". I want one that isn't defective also but to me, it's confirmed, they changed nothing screen wise.

    So move on.

Ran some IR tests a few times on my new LG SJE1 and haven't had any IR that I could detect.

Screen looks great, no light leakage.  I think I'm just going to take my chances with this screen, rather than try to get a Samsung

If anyone else gets a 15" with the new LG, please post whether you get IR or not.

Just received my first ever macbook (15" Retina) late last evening, confirmed that its an LG screen (LP154WT1-SJE1). In the process of running some tests to see if there is any IR issue.

I received the same model screen. Ran some tests as well and cannot see any IR. Just as you said, I think I will keep this one instead of playing the screen lottery. I don't have any dead pixels, light leakage etc. Plus the screen is not yellow in any sense.

You cannot make that assumption that all LG screens have an issue with IR. As stated here or somewhere else, if that was the case thousands upon thousands of individuals would be posting about the issue. Since this a different version of the screen, it may be that the issue is now non-existant.

Just picked up my rMBP 15" 2.3Ghz/16GB/512GB from store at Palo Alto.

    $ ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01-A01

No Image retention after 10 minutes of checkboards.

Two slight yellow radial tints at bottom of the screen near buttons F3 and F9.

I can only seem them when I make entire screen white.

I checked 4 other 15" rMBPs at that store and I haven't seen a flawless screen.

All of them have this yellow tint / 2 spots at bottom with minor changes.

Here's a pic of my maxxed out 15" retina haswell in a dark room.  I have the

    LP154WT1-SJE1 screen.

No Image retention, but it seems warm overall and more so on the left side.  What do you guys think?  People with samsung screens are yours less "warm"?

It's really hard to tell from that image. To me it looks warm on both left and right, more likely the photo though rather than anything else.

The Samsung I have is a lot less warm that the previous generation rMBPs...much much better colour wise, similar to the colours of the LG displays in the previous rMBPs which I preferred. Interesting to note that you are saying the LG looks slightly warm on the left as essentially if I look close enough I have the warmer look on my Samsung on the left handside. I mentioned it previously as yellow but warmer is probably a better term with these newer displays. The old displays were definitely yellow without a shadow of a doubt.

Can you confirm that you have the dedicated GPU to confirm nlra's idea that only machines with a dedicated GPU can be interrogated for display manufacturer.

Many reported yellowly Samsung displays, including me. I assume LP154WT1-SJE1 is LG. A better comparison photograph would be two displays side-by-side.

I think I can absolutely make that assumption.  You even have people posting they have IR and don't care. You have people posting they didn't realize they had it until they found this thread or other or other posting's in other places. Actually, you're making the assumption that people would post here. You're making the assumption that the problem is gone based on what? Haswell? What different screen? sja2? That's not new and people posted long ago that they had sja2 and IR.

I've been following this thread since last summer, Nothing has changed from then until now as far as IR goes that I can see from the this thread.

Of course apple could put this all to rest by posting and coming clean on the issue.
