Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Alright, earlier this morning/afternoon I posted that my Samsung has no IR problems, and I want to tell you guys it is still doing well with no IR/ghosting whatsoever. I did however notice a "mura" or a small cluster of defective pixels. They were hard to see but once I restarted the computer it became visible almost immediately. There's nothing really wrong about them, it is just brighter on that single spot (about 2 millimeters in thickness).

    *edit*

There's also a much smaller thread going on about the "mura" bright spots too! Here's the link in case you have any and were wondering about them. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4042189?tstart=0

I had the same "bright spot" issue with my first rMBP (which also had IR). I hadn't really noticed it at first, but when they put me thorugh a bunch of troubleshooting steps, one of the steps was to have an all-white screen for a while. The bright spot becomes brighter the brighter the background is, so on an all-white screen, it was very noticable (and on a black screen, it wasn't there at all). It was also about 1-2mm in diameter and a but fuzzy on the edges, so it didn't appear to be a pixel defect as much as a lighting defect.

I didn't have the bright spot problem with my replacement, but I still have the IR problem.

It doesn't matter. The point here is that all of the LG are faulty.

In my case, I just notice the IR on mine 2 days ago, especially when using on battery. It's not as bad as others' cases but it is faintly there. I've had my computer for almost 1 month and it had been absolutely perfect until this point.

I think I will call Apple Care so they can write it in my file. If there' such a thing; I've read the hard time this other poster had and no one seem to have a clue by reading his file.

My third week 33 LG has no IR whatsoever.

1hour+ testing with the same method I used on my last two rMBP with LG screens (which showed up after 30 minutes and 5 minutes respectively).

If you want them to add the notes into the "file" I think you need to actualy request for it. I was able to and the notes remained the next time I called back. If you get some dope on the phone, just politely end the phone call and call again for someone who is actually competent. Either that or insist for a transfer to a Senior. Another thing is to make sure to call Apple Care's (1 800 APL-CARE) phone and not Apple's customer service (1800 MY APPLE). I've always gotten **** help from customer service for some reason. Apple Care seems to be the better bet of the two.

Thank you for your kind advice. And yes, I do that with any place I call, though I don't like hanging up on people, I rather call back and get someone that has a clue. I have to say that every single time I had to call Apple throughout the years they have been great.

(Unrelated: I had an HTC One X phone for 1 month and had to call them, horrible customer service. Returned that and went back to my iPhone)

Jerbs, how long did you have the computer? I thought I had a perfect one until 2 days ago. Now I'm getting nervous and don't wanna play that endless swaps with Apple.

Well let me tell you guys a funny story that I experianced today, I got my replacement rMBP on friday and it had a LG screen and also had the IR issue. So I called my personal contact that apple appoted to me and he is so nice and he did transfer me to a apple care specialist and he wanted to double check whether he can get me a samsung display. But then this apple care senior specialist called Mathew said he will send this info to enginears and get back to me on tuesday. So today he get back at me and to my surpriced this senior specialist told me Eng told him that few Mac book pro Retinas has this issue and its totally normal and they do not recomend to replace or repair. I was furious and told him if it is few rMBP then its not normal if it is everything then thats normal, and then I told him according to your argument few computers might not work and thats normal then you dont have to repair that also. I really listen to him very hard for 30 min a phone call that lasted for 50 min before I lashed back at him. I had to tell him my proffesion to stop him bull *******. Then after telling my profession and talking about 14 day return policy and telling him if you stick to this word I can take you to courts he transfered me to a sales representatiive to arange a replacement.

So then this sales representative asks me all sorts of questions (cos I told apple in my proffesion I have to read lot of scientific papers so I read lot of PDF documents). So this sales representative asked me whats the software I use to view PDFs. Then I told her its Preview. Then to my surprice she asked me whats that software Preview. Is it a Microsoft software. (Ha ha they dont know there own softwares). Then I told her preview is the software that comes with the macOSX. And She didnt belive me (And I think she still thinks I lyed and preview is a microsoft software).

So finally this lady told me to send my mac back and they can do a replacement after that. Then I told her its not the way it happend earlier. So then I had to put her on hold and called my personal contact in Apple online store (who arange my previous replacement) and had to do a conference call. He listen to this girls story and told her you can hang up I ll take care of this. And finally he arranged a replacement with in minutes. So this is my story today.

So guys dont back down fight for your right, They come up with some stupid arguments.

Well DUH! Then you can't say your LG display has no IR at all. You just got the computer.

Let us know in 30 days and I do hope you don't have to.

PS: In my case, I didn't do any testing, much less the ridiculous things I have been reading there. I noticed it on my Apple grey background after I had been reading email with my usual 50% brightness.

Yes I just got the computer, but most users here who had gotten replacements do tests right out of the box and found that they had LG displays and noticed IR. Within 5 hours right out of the box.

Week 26 LG, had it for more than a month. Tested zebra for more than 30 minutes, no IR. How long do I have to test this for?

Oh I'm very well aware of that. I have been following this thread since day one.

What I'm simply saying is that you can't chant victory until you've had the computer for a while.

Well, its up to all of you now to voice your opinions on TUAW http://www.tuaw.com/2012/08/14/are-retina-macbooks-displaying-screen-issues/ Or this issue just quietly hides under a rug

People, you need to go over to TUAW and show the world that this is a real issue... or it's going to stay in the dark

Guys i have a week 30 rMBP with Samsung screen. IR is only present if i leave it there with max brightness for more than 1 hour, even so it was very subtle and hardly noticeable (only the edges of the windows are slightly visible), so i don't know if it's classified as faulty or perfect.

Unrelated: I would like to voice out my concerns about apple's deteriorating built quality, as my 'delete' and 'return' keys on my keyboard now produces an annoying squeaking sound whenever i press on it. Called applecare and they asked me to bring it to a service center as they can't do anything about it if it's a hardware issue. Really frustrated with all these problems plagueing me as a laptop with such a high price tag shouldn't be faulty in any way. I also noticed significant slowdowns in bootup and shut down times after installing photoshop and few other applications plus upgrading to ML, now bootup takes close to 30s and shut down 20+. There were also other problems which i assume is software related going on in my computer. Tell me if you guys experienced similar issues.
