Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

JoshD, you seem to be knowledgable with specific build dates and serial numbers. Generally speaking, do you have any evidence that later build dates have better screens?

Like I said earlier, I have a late 2013 rMBP, ordered at the end of November, had it for a week. I have the Samsung screen with A01 which it is my understanding that this means it's Samsung's latest revision. Would your gut feeling be that me seeking a screen replacement would be a waste of time now or in the immediate future?

Would we have to wait till, let's say early 2014 or late 2014 models for another screen revision and hopes that the issues have been ironed out?

the latest revison as i know A02(and people who wrote previously as i understand ok with it) , i recieved day before yesterday 2nd replacement with A01 screen Samsung and it's ok with ir and yellow but it's dim and normal bright is at max only. so I plan to recieve money back and try in january 2014 cause i recieved 3 machines dated 44 week-1 week of november(even 2nd replacement) . So it's no new machines in central warehouse here in Moscow,Russia and 44 week is not good in brightness and goes dim(1st and 2nd machines were LG-SJE1).

or i will check out 13' macbook pro with retina

Thanks M5Marco but I don't really know much, just what I've read here and around the web. There was a thread somewhere about assessing build times based on the serial number. Google for it and you'll find it. As far as the Sumsung versions there are two numbers I've seen: 1) which comes from the color profiles in the Displays system preference <A022> and 2) which comes from running a terminal command (works only with those machines with descrete graphics apparently) <A01>.

As MD Ilya said, apparently there is a newer generation A02 display but I haven't heard about this myself and Googling about it in relation to MBP or anything Apple yield pretty much no info. I have heard of older versions of the Samsung (such as A018, A019... but those may be LG in fact). If not, they may be from the 2012 model since this was an early build and shows as A022. Anyhow, I agree that this screen is tinted a bit yellow and is "dim" at 50% brightness but I don't find it to be so bad that one would consider it defective in that alone. I haven't compared it in person to the LG but I'd prefer this over retention, especially if it gets worse down the road.

I would have no idea what's going to happen in 2014 and how they will handle the issues. I'd say that if you don't like it you should return it. I'm hoping that if, down the road, there's something dramatically better that replaces this version we can go to Apple and request they swap for the better color-balanced display... if there's a clear improvement. Hard to say if that will be possible. But I'm sure there's a better shot if you have AppleCare.

Erm. To make a long story short: I haven't read anything saying specificially that newer builds are better. There was a thread somewhere about the N or P (5th number in the serial that indicates build week) having better screens but then someone else posted that they got a bad screen in a P version and the theory was blown.

I have an A019 and it is a late 2013 model (15"). My brother has an A020 screen and it is a late 2013 model (13").

My information retrieved from posters here these are LG screens.

Funny I wrote to Tim Cook saying I was tired of this IR BS and I got a call from Apple executives. I'll call them back on monday but I wonder what they expect to do for me as they obviously won't fix the issue.

If they haven't seen it already in 2 years I'm seriously worried for them.

You are in for a surprise. You will be the first one telling them about the problem. It is said Kim Jong Un doesn't believe that people are starving to death  in his kingdom.

The executives will let you know there is no such problem as a bad screen.

Well either way, at least they will know. And I promise you that they will do something about it (for you at least). I think the iPad mini retina is also having IR issues, btw.

pls. let captin Cook and his them know about this thread.  We are not OCDing over this.  It's a real issue.  I'm on my second 13" rMBP with the same issue.  I hope they will do a screen swap when they have a fix.  Point them to this thread.

Well I honestly can't say that this screen issue isn't irritating. I purchased this rMBP (my first Apple computer) with the expectation that it was an elite product in the industry.

So far this is an excellent machine, only marred by this screen issue in my opinion.

I am more of a perfectionist and details man, and I do take into account that we are all individually unique and that our eyes each see slight variances of "tint" for the same color.

I just hope Apple addresses this real soon. With a stellar screen this machine would be 100% in my eyes. Even more than 100%! 110%!

JoshD, Your first machine with the creaking case you mentioned that the screen was a Samsung revision A01 and was "better" than what others have posted on forums.

Your second (and current) machine, with good case, you mentioned the screen is the same as the first but also "better"? No yellowing?

Or is it a different screen?

What could they do for me ? Every 13" screen art suffering from IR. They can't build me a good one so I don't think they are going to help ...

M5Marco: It appears to be the same screen. The Samsung A01/A22 with overall yellow tint. But no yellow spots (as some experienced previously with previous Samsung models). This is the screen model that others have called "dim" and with "overall yellow/warm tint". I'd prefer it was indeed brighter because in natural light you really do need to have the brightness maxed out. But it still feels like it's a "style" of display than a lighting problem.

Colonel.Cool: I'd imagine they would probably offer you your money back or the option to have the screen replaced at first opportunity.
