Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Yeah, your eyes adjust. But the good thing about using a calibrator is that it doesn't so the color should be pretty accurate. I am seeing a slight bit of green in the light greys. Sometimes it takes a few passes to get it even better. When I get a chance I'll try that and post those.

It's my feeling that the Samsung displays are out of spec or the 10.9 profile is incorrect and thus the default profile being used makes it look very yellow.

Personally, I just need a machine now. I have AppleCare so I'm hoping that if there is a fix Apple will make it available. I can live with the Samsung, now that it's calibrated. But it still falls short of Apple's typical quality standards.

Regarding tagging the post, I think you have to be the OP. No worries. Thanks for the Like

Do me a favor, see if you see the color shift on restart (just after you see the spinner show below the Apple logo).

JoshD: If you are telling me that with more time and tweaks you can cook up an even better display profile, I am excited and wait eagerly for it.

Regarding checking the color after a restart, are you referring to watching the Apple logo on the case?

M5Marco: I might be able to get an even better profile. It's pretty hit and miss. We'll see...

Regarding the color, if the logo changes color that'll be something pretty interesting indeed.   Actually, I mean to watch the grey boot screen with the logo on it and see if you see a color shift after the spinner is up for a second or so.

JoshD: I checked as you ask and I did see a change. Now I can't give you a definitive answer because I need to do it more times in order to establish what i am seeing, but it seems the screen goes gray to a slight yellow/greenish. The thing is I don't know if it was simply my screen dimming. So I need to keep at it to make sure my eyes aren't playing tricks.

Ok. Let me know. I'm sure it's the same. This means that a software update could potentially improve the color balance issue. But I do think the root cause is in the screen hardware.

Wow.... How did you get that?  My MacBook Pro Retina 15" still under the 1 year original warranty is now getting it's fourth (yes you read that right) logic board and the display is showing severe ghosting and still they refuse to replace it or refund me.

Is it a late 2013 model? It seems to me from your post it might be a pre "late 2013" model.

    Sorry it's not a 2013, it's a 2012.

I get nervous and start thinking of making more regular backups although mine is a 15" late 2013 model.

Did you loose any data while they had to replace the logic board?

No the hard drive has been fine and not been replaced to my knowledge.  Time machine works so well and so fast if you go SSD to SSD it's really not much of a hassle and I don't worry about that.  I had to wipe mine on my own and do my own testing on a fresh install of the OS just ot make them keep working on it.  The experience has been:

Apple: Deny there is a problem

Me: Present evidence to the contrary

    Apple: Change logic board

    Computer is still broken

I am on my third iteration of that with no end in sight.  The first two times they claimed faulty logic board sensors the third faulty GPU.  Every time they returned it I was able to easily determine it was still broke within 5-10 minutes.  They claim they tested it for 5-7 days in both cases.  It's truly unbelievable.

    Just keep time machine backups.

After returning 5 2013 rMBPs to Apple this month, I finally decided to go a different route. Ended up buying last years rMBP with very similar specs for $1,300 less. It has the Samsung screen with yellow tint. But the screen is evenly tinted, no backlight unevenness or bleed. It has AppleCare till August of 2015, so I should be covered. Now I look at the screen, and every time I get ****** about the tint, I remind my self that a) It’s probably the best I can get at the moment, and b) I saved $1,300, so I can deal with it being a bit defective.

BTW, having taken apart both the 2013 and the 2012 model, it looks like the 2012 was better built. Better tolerances and magnets rather then those stupid bottom panel clips. Might be just this one thought. Any way, that’s my story, I am going to try that color profile, JoshD.

Jesus... you mean the 2013's are worse?  Can you elaborate?  See my story just above your latest post - that is for a 2012.  I can't imagine a computer that is more defective!

i can't speak to the 2012's, but i went through 3 rMBPs (late-2013) in the past 7 days.  all returned. all had problems.

I didn't even bother wasting my time on a 4th.

    What was wrong with them?

What is wrong with Apple?  Don't they make anything good anymore?
